About
An interesting and dynamic regional gallery where there is always lots to see. Upstairs, the gallery collection is definitely worth a visit, as the Gallery holds one of the best regional collections in the country and is always looking for interesting, thought-provoking ways of displaying it. Downstairs there are temporary exhibitions, with at least four open at any one time.

We attended the Linda McCartney Photographic exhibition which was connected with the Gallery and also spent time at the Gallery and the surrounding area even enjoying the laneways. I must say we were very happy with all the staff we had contact with and the building itself was beautiful. And the exhibition was well worth the trip.

Came especially to see the "Linda McCartney " photo exhibition. Enjoyable, and the rest of the gallery is nice to see.

Went to this venue for the Linda McCartney photograph exhibition in December 2021 and was not disappointed. Very friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Saw other parts of the building too and will have to come back another time as their exhibits were just too many to take in on a short visit.

The Linda McCartney exhibition was very well put together and I'm sure her family would have been proud of Ballarat and their presentation of her work.

A visit to this gallery is highly recommended. Not only is the collection worth seeing but the gallery itself, which dates from 1890, is one of Ballarat's finest buildings.

The Art Gallery of Ballarat has an interesting permanent collection; it also has visiting collections, which are worth traveling to see. The exhibits are usually exceptional. The Colonial era paintings and early Modernists are well worth seeing.

This gallery continues to have much appeal, but there are some disappointing recent changes. There is now practically no furniture on display, which takes away some of the atmosphere, unfortunately the cafe has closed, and the bookstore no longer stocks some of its more distinctive and regionally-based items. Some of its most famous paintings are not on display (either out on loan or 'in the vault'), and there are some puzzling empty spaces in some rooms. The great strength of this gallery has always been high quality Australian art of 1880 to about 1970, and this should be much more prominently featured. Let's hope the Art Gallery of Ballarat doesn't lose its soul.

Visited the Linda McCartney Retrospective exhibition which was suburb with many unseen photo chosen by her family. The art gallery is the oldest and largest regional art gallery in Australia. Established in 1884 it provides a great backdrop for the art.

Excellent art gallery with some interesting work by Australian and other artists. Galleries are airy and full of light. Spacious too.

The Ballarat Art Gallery is a brilliant place to spend a couple of hours during a cold winter's day. There are currently seven varied and interesting exhibitions as well as the main gallery offerings. The lay-out of the gallery is perfect, there is plenty of information on every piece of art and the gallery staff are extremely helpful. There is also an excellent shop where you can pick up tasteful gifts or souvenirs. And it's free! What more could you ask for in a tourist attraction?

My husband and I visited last week. It was not our first visit. Loved most of the exhibits, and I don't mind artistic licence, however, disrespectful racist art and swearing draws the line. It is an insult to Euro Australians to have Captain Cook in two artworks called "Captain F****er" and Captain C**t". Would it be OK for me to call great Aboriginal people "Truganini C**t" or "King Billy F****er"? I dont think so and would never consider it. The art gallery should not be a home to reverse racism. Greatly disappointed on this visit. Wise up. Black, White, red, yellow, brown or black we are all Australians and should have our ancestors respected. but it seems not if you are white...................
