We came up the big river in a yacht to the Marina and obtained a berth there. Marina staff very helpful. What a great atmosphere with all the cafes and visiting overseas yachts. So close to the shops and supermarket for those without a car. Was brilliant very hot weather

A lovely place to take friends and family. You can just take a short easy stroll along the marina visiting delightful shops and gallaries, and enjoy the view, or enjoy the great park with the kids or you can do the loop walk which can also be extended depending on how adventurous you are.

Lots of places to eat or just get a coffee. Our favourite is Mokaba. Nice friendly staff and beautiful food. Nothing is too much trouble.

Wonderful space, find the shops and cafe's/restaurants a bit tired looking and same old same old. It needs music or performing arts every now and then.

If you haven't been to Whangarei for a while, or are here for the first time, a good place to start your explorations would be the Town Basin. There is SO much to see and do - wonderful cafes, a comprehensive Information Centre and Art Gallery, two restaurants, the fascinating Clapham's Clock Museum, a high-quality craft shop, a cycle centre,... This place is the heart of Whangarei - great places to eat, shops, gallery, clock museum, playground, ice-creams... and all in a wonderful setting by the boats.

We spent a couple of hours walking along the art and heritage trail, which is adequate. We consumed some fudge and ice cream from the cafes and shops along the way. Stop off and watch some beautiful glass being created!

If you are in Whangarei and wondered where to go for lunch or dinner, I would suggest the Town Basin. There are a number of restaurants and cafes to suite different tastes and budgets. Allocate some time to visit the Claphams Clock Museum and the craft and speciality shops in the area. Then take a stroll along the river and... More

The town basin has a lot to offer, from the marvelous eateries, to the trail along the waterfront. We have enjoyed Claphams Clock museum, delighted in the ever changing floral displays and enjoyed the Christmas tree along the waterfront. It seems to be very family oriented. Certainly a great place to spend a few hours on a summer's day.

This used to be a very busy freight port, back in the day, but now it's been redesigne and rebuilt to provide marina facilities for private pleasure craft. Many bars, cafes and restaurants, and interesting high-end souvenir outlets, as well as open spaces and communal areas. Parking is quite good, and not too daunting. There's a big Pak'n'Save just across... More
