In Greymouth this week during the heavy rain and flooding and visited the breakwater at high tide on Friday 9th. The river was in flood so when it hit the tide coming in at the breakwater the waves were monotonous and a site to see,...More

Always seems to be bleak, grey and atmospheric in Greymouth. I suppose that's why it's called that, or maybe it's just a boring reference to a colonial politician whose name happens to conveniently coincide. Anyway, the breakwater is right there at the end of town...More

This is an enjoyable walk, even in the rain. It is a flat walk, with an asphalt road to the breakwater. There is ample free parking, and toilets are available. There is also freedom camping in this area. The walk to the breakwater shows the...More

Followed the tour path along the foreshore to the go up the break water to try to see some dolphins and had little luck. Was bitterly cold so make sure you’re nice and warm, other than that pretty fun

Totally awesome and sobering visit. To stand at the entrance of the Grey river watching enormous waves crashing while realising that locals risked their lives making that entrance was inspiring and scary. Access to the site is simple and easy from the town centre and...More

Visited on Friday 11th May. We went for a drive around Greymouth and headed out to the breakwater. It was worth going there to get a great view looking back towards the town with the hills in the background.

The sea was quite calm when we went to the breakwater, although it can very dangerous when the seas are rough. Worth going to see the area, either by car or on the walking track.
