I have been meaning to write a review ever since we went on the TranzAlpine Train to Greymouth last November.

It was a wonderful experience from the moment I booked it. The booking was slightly more complicated because we got on at Darfield and went to Greymouth on the Scenic Plus carriage, and the back to Lake Brunner on Scenic, and the picked it up again two days later and returned to Darfield on Scenic.

Nothing was a problem for the staff. They were all so friendly.

Food and beverage was great. The Scenic Plus experience was brilliant..

The whole experience was amazing, and great to do it both ways so that we saw what we missed on the way over.

We recommend it to everyone.

We did Greymouth vs Christchurch route. First 3,5 hours are spectacular but last hour not. Separate carriage for making photos but was too crowded and not built for tall people. The train was delayed for 1 hour 15 minutes. There are almost no waiting facilities on the train station and nothing is being offered by the company.

We were so please we got to go on TranzAlpine just after it was back in service from Covid-19 lock down. We were thankful for good weather for winter time . We decided to stay the night in Greymouth rather than spending 9+ hours on the train returning on same day recommend this. The dinning car had reasonable priced food. Enjoyed the great coffee and muffins. Maybe next time do it in summer for a contrast.

Our Tranzalpine trip from Greymouth to Christchurch was fabulous and Scenic Plus is highly recommended and worth the extra cost. Although it was a cloudy day, we still had magnificent views and the continuous food and wine was excellent. Thanks especially to Jenny, Ash and Gary for their service and Gary particulalry for his selfie and ongoing personal commentary.

One of the four great New Zealand Journeys. Amazing scenery, great staff, comfortable!

Food on the journey was reasonable quality, reasonable price and served with a smile.

Scenery was awesome. Get to the viewing carriage as you approach the Alps. Get to the C/D side of the carriage for the best camera shots. It’s very cold so wrap up warm.

Comfortable seats and the headphone commentary is very informative with excellent quality sound.

This is the best railway trip I have ever made. I have done it twice now and the scenery is specular.
The train is comfortable and has a buffet car that serves food for a reasonable price.
It is expensive for a train trip but when you travel you can see why it costs so much.
It is amazing that the railway was built so long ago, the Otira tunnel is 8kms long and was an great achievement in such a difficult mountain environment.

We drove down from Christchurch through Arthurs pass to Hokitika for a couple of days, then caught the Tranz Alpine train back from Greymouth to Christchurch. The views were far more beautiful on the drive down than on the train back.
The train was very slow to start off with and also on parts of the journey along the way. No wonder it's always late getting in. It was comfortable but too boring for two active seniors

We took the TranzAlpine train from Greymouth to Christchurch, and then rented a car in Greymouth. It was a relaxing travel day and my kids (age 14, 11 and 11) enjoyed it. Just bring plenty for the kids to do because they won't want to listen to the commentary! The commentary could certainly be improved. It was a bit boring and I don't recall any jokes. The scenery is very nice. Not as impressive as train rides in Switzerland and the French Alps, but still a great way to traverse the South Island!

A bit overhyped, but still a worthwhile experience. The ride traverses scenic countryside amid stately mountains. It is peaceful and relaxing a nice way to get from one side of the island to the other. The luggage was handled nicely and the train staff were engaging and interesting. The food selection was a bit meager - it seems they start in Christchurch and don't restock before leaving Greymouth. What was available was good.

The scenery on this trip from Christchurch to Greymouth, and then back the next day, is stunning. Easy to take photos from an open carriage. We travelled in the Scenic Plus carriage; meals sort of OK but overall probably not worth the extra cost. There was a good selection of food and drinks at the cafe. The advantage of Scenic Plus was luggage was checked-in and looked after, and meals with drinks brought to our seat. Overall, this was a good experience.
