Have you ever been to a museum dedicated to a naïve art from - like glass icons? I've never till this year ... and it was great.
In Sibiel - in the cemetery yard just beside the Holy Trinity church you shall find the "Zosim Oancea Museum of Glass Icons" - a unique place I can assure you.
Zosim Oancea was a priest in Sibiel - persecuted by the communist's during the regime in Romania - who served the community in this small village near Sibiu - who came up with the idea of creating this unique and special museum in the late 1960 early 1970's.
The museum is open from 8:30 till 19:00 with a break from 13:30 till 14:00 - visiting fee is pocket friendly - doesn't worth mentioning- fee for tacking pictures is 20 Ron , just under 5 Euros ... but it is worth it.
Overall , regardless if you are into art or not, regardless if you are religious or not ... it is a place definitely worth visiting - so when you are in the area of Sibiel check it out.

I like icons, and expected some very fine works of art here, but sadly found the glass to be quite dull and un-inspiring. Many of the icons were cracked and were of a more "primitive" nature to the wooden painted icons that are more familiar in churches. Photos are permitted once a "photo tax" has been paid. I was more taken with the little church and graveyard next door and the storks nesting on the telegraph pole at the street entrance. A lovely quiet little village - well worth a stroll up the lane.

We found the Zosim Oancea 'Icons on Glass' Museum most interesting. We felt it was truly a slow, painstaking art to reverse paint Icons on glass. The ethnic and regional diversity of Romania's population was reflected in the artists interpretations of specific icon themes.
This museum is a short distance west of Sibiu and a little difficult to find.

If you like religious icons then you will like this. It has artwork grouped by the region in Romania that they come from. On the same grounds as the museum you'll notice a white church. This is the true gem of Sibiel and i'm shocked to see it is not listed on Tripadvisor. It doesn't look much from the outside but the frescoes inside are truly astounding, the artists were persecuted at the time, the intensity of their artwork is of historical importance. If you visit this museum don't forget the church, one of the most beautiful church interiors I have ever seen.

A nice overview of the glass icons from Romania. This special way of icon painting is specific for this country.

In the middle of nowhere in Transylvania, a large collection of Icons on glass sort by style/provenance. A very friendly guide who speaks english and french. If you like naive art, I recommend it. The quick visit of the church worth the time.

We visited this museum as part of a tour. It is certainly different. The skill and time required to produce these icons, painted on glass, on the reverse side, is almost mind boggling to contemplate. The guide in the museum was very knowledgeable and helpful. there are other examples of local art/craft work, eg painted eggs, bead work, painted dishes, weaving, etc. As we were with a tour, finding the museum was not a problem, however this may be more difficult for independent travellers. Worth a visit.

There are already reviews about The Museum of Icon on Glass founded by Father Zosim Oancea in Sibiel, near Sibiu, Romania. One of the main problems for a tourist interested by this unique museum is finding it. I want to solve this problem within this post.

If you are in Sibiu, head West towards Sebes, Alba Iulia, Arad or Oradea on E68/E81. There is a 11 km drive from the last roundabout in Sibiu (near the airport) until a brown road sign indicating "4 Situl rural Sibiel" (4 km to Rural site of Sibiel) will appear next to "7 Orlat" (7 km to Orlat) - a blue road sign.

Turn left and follow the indicating direction (South-East) on 106D road. Drive another 2 km until the very first crossing, where the brown plate "2 Situl rural Sibiel" "Sibiel 2" will indicate you to turn right.

After driving another 2 km on 106E you will reach the destination. The museum is situated in the churchyard, and youwill notice the church on the left side of the road.

I expected this to be boring but I had to be dragged away after more than an hour, and am looking forward to returning.

It is a unique collection of folk-art vividly illustrating an artistic and cultural tradition. The creation of these icons still continues so the collection includes modern items. The sincerity, and enthusiasm of the creators of these items shines through. The intense meaning spiritual meaning also comes through.

While you are there take a look round the church next door
