We booked the evening viewing which was very exciting and worthwhile to watch the very small and cute blue penguins arriving back home to there nesting boxes.

I have to say that watching the rafts (pods) of Blue penguins coming ashore, cautiously climb the hill, and then waddle into their nesting area far exceeded our expectations. Actually seeing these cute little guys is a real treat. They are small, about a foot tall and weigh around 2 pounds. We were there in the first week of March... More

Certainly worth a visit if you are in Oamaru. Worth paying the extra money (approx $15 more) for the premium seating as you will get much closer the the penguins who are only 30 cm tall on average. From the regular seats you will be about 20 meters away. No photography is allowed and the lights used to illuminate the... More

There were lots of little penguins that come up, and they keep tabs of the number for you. However, it is around $30 per person, which is an awful lot for wild penguins that you can find all over new zealand. I don't think that they justify well that that money is just going to conservation either. You can stand... More

This is a nice attraction and has more seating since i was there 9 years ago. It has good commentary in English and Mandarin but still some people don't listen. Everyone was told to keep their seats and not to block the stairs. We all waited patiently for the first 2 lots of penguins to come up but after that... More

Did self guided tour mid afternoon. Sadly did not see many penquins they were still out at sea.Did manage to see a couple of penquins nested in boxes .We saw lots of fur seals . They do guided tours and sunset tours were popular. Fortunately we had seen a few blue penquins before so was not too disappointed not to... More

Saw 113 penguins come ashore. They come in rats of 20 to 30 at a time. They scampered across the beach, up the rocks past the fur seals, and across the grass to their nests. Admission fees support the work of protecting the penguins. This colony has grown tremendously since its nesting habitat has been protected. Not cheap, but well... More

Too funny we saw the Blue Penguins last night in Oamaru, they were so cute and hilarious took an hour for the colony of approx 140 an hour to come in. Got tickets from the info Center in town, or at site, funds go to help the colony grow. Saw seal lions along the breakwater as well. Unique Southern Hemisphere... More

Very adorable to see the blue penguins waddle uphill to their colony. I would recommend if you are going to spend the money, get the premium seats. You will get a better view and will be much closer to watching the penguins hang out with each other once they enter their colony. We were fortunate to see the penguins actually... More

Wrap up warmly and be prepared to be patient- so worth it. We watched over 80 of these enchanting Blue Penguins make their way up from the sea back to the safety of their burrows. The guides were very informative and their knowledge and passion for the penguins was clear to hear and see. Brilliant evening - thank you
