Sue and Stephen are a delightful couple who made our cruise around the Bay of Islands a memorable experience. Not only was the sailing and scenery wonderful, their knowledge of the history, past and current was fascinating. The yacht was spotless and very well sailed. Lunch was excellent and perhaps Sues blueberry muffins are the best in the world! A thoroughly enjoyable day and one I hope to repeat in the summer. Absolutely recommended.

We were on our last stop in a 5 week tour of NZ and were staying at Villa Russell (see review) also owned by Steve and Sue Western. The organisation for our day's sailing was meticulous and Sue's warm blueberry muffins are undoubtedly the best in the world. We sailed with dolphins and saw blue penguins and gannets. We stopped at the idyllic Stingray Cove for swimming, shell gathering, walking and climbing while our buffet lunch including beverages of all kinds was prepared on board. This was the perfect end to our 5 week tour of NZ.

I booked a private sail with Stephen on Feb 18, 2020, for my husband, my parents and myself. I had high hopes for this day trip, not only because it seemed like the best way to see the Bay of Islands, but it also happened to be my 50th birthday. Stephen did not disappoint! I will always remember the day as idyllic. Stephen was a gracious host, even when I misunderstood where to meet him and we were delayed half an hour. After that hiccup, he whisked us out in the bay to catch a sailing breeze. Before I knew it, we were taking turns piloting the boat and seeing fantastic islands and waters. Stephen was a great source of information about the area and sailing. And what's more, he guided us to a secluded blue bay for a delicious lunch he'd prepared like an expert caterer, complete with a glass of wine and a swim in the pristine water. What more could we have asked for? Candles? Yes, they were on my morning muffin, accompanied with song. Photos? Yes, he's an accomplished photographer as well and somehow found the time to record special moments during our trip. I would recommend a sail on the Kingfisher to anyone who visits the Bay of Islands. Definitely time well-spent!

Thankyou for your kind comments. Having the Port authority staff saying you were on the Paihia Wharf when you were not, did not help, but in spite of that misinformation, we found you. I am glad that as a charter operator we usually go out for at least a six hour period and you still got some time on the water. Fiftieth Birthdays only come about once. And you certainly deserved that great birthday. Happy Birthday . Stephen

It's hard to pick what was the best part of the day, though my 10-year-old niece will never forget seeing dolphins close up, seeing wild penguins, or steering the boat all by herself. Stephen clarified early on that the actual things we do will vary according to who is aboard. Our group was fairly flexible, but there were swimmers and walkers rather than fishers and snorkellers, so once we'd veered off to admire dolphins at play - swooping right under the boat! - and to see a small flotilla of little blue penguins bobbing about, we headed for a gorgeous white sand cove on an uninhabited island - sipping fresh coffee and eating amazing muffins (baked by his wife, Sue) on the way. Ferried by dinghy into the beach, we swam and collected shells while others hiked. Stephen? He was back aboard laying out a wonderful cold spread, ready for our return. The rest of the day meant sailing - engine off - and admiring islands slipping past. A fabulous day! Stephen may be flexible in terms of activities, but he does set a few rules. No sunscreen on the boat screen, no wet togs on the seats, for example. All fair enough. Highly recommended, but do let him know if there's anything specific you'd like to do, he will try to ensure it happens. For those on a budget, join an open cruise and take other guests as part of the experience. Check what clothes/footwear is recommended. And be aware if you're a hardened thrillseeker, it may seem tame. If you don't usually sail, and would love to spend a day exploring this gorgeous area by sea, it's hard to beat.

My husband and I had a fantastic day out sailing in the beautiful Bay of Islands with Stephen. The food was fabulous - the highlight probably the homemade muffins which were utterly delicious. We sailed, we swam, we ate and we were entertained with Stephen’s stories. In his other job he is a photographer and is very happy to take fun photos on the trip.

Thank you for your lovely review. I can see I have to always be one step ahead of my wife's muffins?
