Velavadar blackbuck sanctuary is an unexpected treat for nature lovers. Pravin Vegad was our guide and drove us in a gypsy through the sanctuary. He is so knowledgeable that he draws your attention to every bit of flora and fauna in the sanctuary. We could see the blackbuck herd, but he pointed out the hyena lurking in the background. He told us about every bird, big and small, migratory and local. The best surprise was when he took beautiful pictures with our cellphone cameras through his binocular lens. We now have national geographic worthy videos in slow motion of the wonderful wildlife that abounds in the sanctuary. He can be contacted at 6351615107.

Went on both morning & late afternoon safaris. No rushing and bustle of other vehicles as in other parks. Drivers & guides extremely attentive and knowledgeable, which resulted us seeing a wide collection of Birds & mammals which included, several large & small raptors, owls, water birds and many others. Also a family of 5 wolves, 2 hyenas, fox, Nilgai and of course, several hundred Black Buck. Don’t forget your binoculars to get the best out of your time in the park.

Worth visiting place. One can see Black bucks from near. If fortunate one can get sighting of Hyena, Bulls etc. You can take your car inside instead of hiring jeep.

Absolutely fantastic. Great staff, great food and superb services. We spent a night there. Rooms had a very old world charm. The individual cottages are spaced out. The food was terrific. They also helped arrange the safari the following morning. We had a really really good time here.

Paradise for Nature Lovers-

I have read lots of reviews and done information on Black Buck National Park. I will try and cover all the details in this write up but still if I miss out please message I shall try and address them.

Location: It is located around 145 kms from Ahmedabad in Velavadar. Self commute is preferable as it is remote location and govt or private transport will not be available and will take more time. Roads are good and motor able. You can take medium segment car like indica, santro in the safari. It’s a bit rough terrain as its not proper road, but should be manageable in small car. However bigger car would be best with some good height. Most important location is so remote you will not get Mobile networks forget about internet or wifi. Mobile network is hardly available.

Place 9/10: This place is unexplored Raw Nature. Animals and birds all around and you actually get the feel of Indian Village. Fresh air, so peaceful and so nature some. This is one of the places where you have to go and feel the nature. Please note this is only for nature lovers and peace seekers. The safari will take around 3 hours. Safari has to be taken in your personal vehicle. Safari charges 500/- per car and is dependent on the vehicle you carry for safari. Bigger vehicles like tempo traveler etc can also be taken. The safari opens at 7 am and is open through late evening. There are no specific time slots for safari but you can entre during open hours and take safari in your own vehicle with guide. Please note vehicle is not provided and has to be in your own vehicle. Only guide which is compulsory has to be taken from the counter. Safari booking will be on the spot and so will be guide hiring. Guide charges are Rs 100/- . Camera charges are 200/-. Charges are for Indian citizen.

Huge flocks of Black Buck jumping and hovering around in front of your car. Big leaps, speed, with which they run is delight to watch. The safari has two sides. One is for bird watching and other side is for Black Buck. Preferably choose morning or late evening time so as to spot more birds and black bucks.

Stay 9/10: Stay options are limited. One is high end expensive resort black buck resort and other is Black Buck Forest Lodge- maintained by government. Now this lodge has.

1. 2 Dormitories- 10 persons capacity per dormitory. Rental 1350/- flat for entire dormitory irrespective of number of persons staying. I stayed here. Big rooms with two attached bathrooms and wash rooms. 9 beds and 9 lockers 9 Rotating fans. Towels and Toiletries also provided. Neat and clean maintained rooms and staff will take care of your needs.

2. 2 A/c & 2 Non A/c Rooms. Rental- 1500 for Non A/c and 3000 Rs for A/c per night. One A/c and Non A/c room is always reserved for govt employees and rooms are quite small.

Ok above things said booking here is long process and tedious. No online booking accepted. One has to call 0278-24226425/ 0278-2428644 and check availability and make telephone booking first. After that Demand Draft has to be sent. Now Demand draft is in different names for Dormitory stay and Room Stay. Please ask on above numbers in whose favor Demand Draft has to be made. For Dormitory stay they accept only Bank of Baroda Demand Draft. So all these aspects have to be asked in detail.
Further now they have started accepting direct deposit and Fund transfer in their account recently. Post payment you need to send proof of payment and simple application for stay and Velavadar. Address for posting will be provided on above numbers.

For Dormitory Stay & For Room Stay
DD Favor of: Eco Tourism Society & RFO Velavadar- Payable at Bhavnagar
DD Payable Payable at Velavadar
Bank of India & Any nationalized bank
Amount 1350/- & 1000 non ac 3000 ac

Address to be posted. Assistant Conservator of Forest, Blackbuck National Park, Annexy Building, Block S-10 2nd Floor, Bahumali Bhavan, Bhavnagar-364 001

Black buck national park velavadar is a long time attraction for me, this is a grass land called Indian savanna, which give similar looks of Africa, this national park is spreads in 34.52sq km area, is a home of 4500 black buck with two albino female, 16 to 18 Indian wolf, and 5 to 6 stripped hyena with different other mamals. The area covered with 3ft high dance grass land where those predators can hide, so only a good guide can make your safari successful
The place is 150 km away from Ahmedabad, in comfortable speed with one stoppage we reach the place within three hours, road condition is really good for a smooth drive and no toll booth in the way, once you leave bhavnagar pipli highway and make your entry to adhelai velavadar road then be care full any time black buck came in the way. This road 10 km, is too narrow to pass any vehicle from front.
We book forest guest house (Kaliyar Bhavan), booking not possible on line, first check the availability by calling forest office Tel.: 0278-428644. If available then send DD of any bank address to RFO Velavadar, and send to Assistant conservator of forest, Blackbuck national park, Bahumali Bhavan, Annex building, Block no S-10, forest department, Bhavnagar 364001. Once your DD is received by them, your booking is confirmed.
There are a total four double bed (3 ac and one non ac) room and two dormitory capacity 10 bed each. Among three ac rooms, two for tourist and one for forest officers, ac room cost 3000 per night, non ac room 1000 per night and dormitory 100 Rs per person. Dormitory is on road side but guest house rooms and in side the park, abount 400 mtrs. Two kitchens are there one for guest house, which supply only tea, and other with dormitory for meals, but you have to pre book your food in advance. There are no other option available for food nearby.
We reach the place at around 10 am in the morning, no documents was asked and we immediately checked in, room was quite good spacious having sofa tea tables and chairs, with attached dressing room and bath, although geyser does not work so they arrange hot water bucket from adjacent ac room, I must admit the room, bathroom, towel, bed sheet everything are exceptionally clean.
We take two safari in the evening and next day morning,
Vehicle entry fee 400 week days, 500 Rs for sat and sun day, Guide charges 400 Rs, and camera charges 200 Rs, we got a great success of spotting Indian stripped hyena in evening, credit goes to our guide Shikandar who is a very well knowledgeable young energetic one, we had spotted numerous birds like rufous-tailed lark, black-crowned sparrow lark, crested lark, common crane, kestrel, imperial Eagle, Short toed Eagle, hen harrier, spotted eagle marsh harrier, montagu’s harrier, flamingoes, pelicans, grey heron, purple heron,
At night we walk through 400 mtr in dark to the dining room for dinar, only one street lamp in the way and the jungle area is totally dark, so don’t forget to have a torch, but I must admit the food quality is magnificent, we enjoyed the real teste of Gujarat, dinner cost 140rs per head. Next morning we did not get breakfast as that was not pre booked.
Night is dark and silent, lots of bugs come from the bottom opening of the door was a problem for us.
Next morning safari I opt for shikendar for guide, but as per the rule guide provided on first come first serve basis so we got balwant, he is quite aged and does not speak Hindi/ English well, in the morning before safari shikendar informed us, that wolf howls and chested black buck all night so more chances for sighting, but our luck does not favor, but we did spot rabbit, golden fox, wild boar, albino black buck, and lots of birds, which my little kid enjoyed too much.

Spread in a stretch of close to 5 kilometer, it is golden brown grass at this time of year and black bucks. We couldn't see any Hyena but saw wild boar, neel gai, and some exotic birds I am not good with names.

Spread on two sides, wetland and grass land, the two hours are worth a visit.

800 INR is the entry and guide fees and you can go via own vehicle. Avoid Sundays as school buses and too many visitors scare the animals away.

In Blackbuck National park at Velavdar, there is always happening something.
You never get a dull moment. Though the area of this small National Park is just about 35 sq. kms. the density of wildlife is amazing. Hence you get to see some animal or bird every minute. The park is essentially a grassland with a lake in the middle.
We spent three days in the park & saw mammals like blackbuck & Neelgai(both plenty) wild boar, wild cat, wolf, hyena, There are no big cats.
In avifauna, we saw hundreds of larks, hundreds of harriers. In addition, we saw about 70 bird species. The park is known as roosting ground of Montagu's harriers and pallid harriers. We also saw big raptors like Tawny eagle, Greater spotted eagle, The water birds like flamingos. pelicans, pied avocet, black winged stilts, comb ducks, shovellers, spot bill ducks, gry heron purple heron, egrets were seen. The black drongo was also seen everywhere.
The forest deptt. has built two new excellent dormitories having nine beds each & they also provide food. The design , construction & location(adjacent to park's office) are very good. The roads inside the park are also good & you are allowed to get down from the vehicle. This provides excellent scope for photography.
The only minus point is that the booking of accommodation is allowed only one month in advance & that too not online.
There is one private hotel also but it is very costly.

Used a long weekend to tick Velavadar off my bucket list. Left Bombay early as the drive was a longish 12 hour one. Ran smack into a gigantic jam outside Baroda. The roads were fairly good except for the last 80-90 kms. The two private resorts there were quoting 11k and 8k per night respectively. (Tariffs to increase from 1st Nov onwards). The Forest department has two dorms of 9 beds called Kaliyar Bhavan. Even these were not available. Each dorm (Not bed) is Rs.1350/night. Lunch and Dinner is available at Rs.150 per head. No fuss home cooked stuff.
The Chief Ranger Harpal Sinh whom we met by accident directed us to Krishna Hotel (Recommended) about 20 mins away.

A narrow approach road divides the sanctuary into grasslands and wetlands. The scenery is stark but beautiful. The morning safari is better if you like birds as the gulf of Khambat attracts a wide variety of predatory and wading birds. The sightings in the afternoon are comparably lower due to the heat presumably. But you cant miss the Blackbucks. They are all over the place. The Indian wolf is the top predator here and an equally rare sight. Other than Birds expect to see Nilgais, Wild Boars, jungle cats and Jackals. Private vehicles are allowed while a tourist gypsy is around Rs.1750. Plus Guide (Mandatory), park entry fees and camera charges.
My lasting memory is of the dry grasslands interspersed with blackbucks like chocolate chips on a coffee ice cream.

Approx. 135 kilometers from Ahmedabad towards Bhavnagar this huge grassland and wetland sanctuary is situated. Early winter is the best time to visit when wetland is not dry, to watch birds as well with blackbuck, deers, wild boar, neel gai. This sanctuary is different than others in the manner that, it allows your own car to enter in the sanctuary. Any hatchback or sedan car will work but after visiting I suggest that SUVs can help you better on some tracks in sanctuary. They charge 500 INR for your vehicle and 200 INR per camera. If you don't have your own vehicle then don't worry they have their own Jeeps. The guide is provided at the entrance at 100 INR. The sanctuary remains open from morning 6.30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

It is an ideal destination for wildlife photographers and bird-watchers. It is expanded in huge area covered with Savannah like grassland. A good place to see some spices in their natural habitat. It will take around 3 hours to finish off the round. On the opposite side of this grassland there is a wetland area specially for bird watching. It would be beneficial to reach early morning for bird watching. I visited the sanctuary during 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. There are no other facilities like food or water. So, kindly keep plenty of them with you, especially if you are going with kids.

Overall it is good place if you are planning for one day outing. There are also resorts around, where you can stay nearby sanctuary and enjoy the nature for few days.

Its a Thumbs Up from my end for this destination.
