I have stayed on numerous occasions at the Ruins Camp Ground which is behind the dunes along the beach. If you want a little more luxury try the Sundowner Tiona Tourist Park which is next door

This beach is great for walking on at low tide. Beware of swimming though as there is often a lot of rips. The beach is accessed by many short tracks from the Lakes Way and some Rec areas behind the beach.
