Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We visited this winery looking forward to a tasting- the first of our stops to several wineries. We were a group of 6 adults and 3 children. One of the staff talked us through the tasting process and welcomed us to a table when one of the owners, Margaret, walked in and abruptly told us we couldn’t taste because we were taking up too much room. We had just sent the kids to play on the grass so only 6 adults at a table of 6 with one other table of 4 occupied. She was incredibly rude and unwelcoming and has tainted our experience of Phillip Island and the Purple Hen Winery brand. It’s a real shame because the winery itself looks beautiful and we were visiting with the intention of supporting regional businesses after a tough 2020! Given our families love of wine I’d say hundreds of dollars that we I’ll now spend elsewhere.

A must see attraction in Philip island. A perfect example of 'how NOT to run a business'! Such a beautiful place & potential in the hands of totally wrong people. Everyone must visit this place, but please don't buy anything.. but if you like to have a bit of fun, try interacting with the staff/owner!

As others have said - precious little bread with the tasting plates, e.g. six thin, 5cm slices with the olive oil and dukkah. Tasting plates quality okay and wines good, however poor service (“forgetting” one of our dishes, or maybe just hoping we’d forget to ask about i!) and meagre serves meant we wished we had skipped the food entirely.

We arrived at the winery only to be told very rudely ( we assume it was the owner) that we were parking in the wrong spot. My husband went to move the car and as the rest of the party walked towards the tasting room the owner then suggested to his dog to bite us. We then decided not to spend any time or money and left. He may need to review his management style!

The wine and staff were beautiful until.... the owners arrived!!!
We were greeted by RUDE, gruff and ARROGANT owners who made a point of circling the groups of patrons trying to enjoy their afternoon by telling them off for this or that.
My friend and I took a photo by the vines and signage that this wasn’t allowed was minimal and the owners arrived making a point of making us feel completely stupid, instead of politely pointing out that this was not allowed.
We stayed another ten mins and watched as the female owner approached another group, who subsequently left, post haste, obviously having been told off too!
Way to make people feel welcome!
Very disappointing end to what could have been a lovely visit. Despite the loveliness of the wine, we will unfortunately never visit again because of the rudeness we experienced from the owners and the way in which we were spoken to- nor will we recommend to anyone-in fact we’d discourage friends from going because of this. We were treated poorly. We understand that we should not have been standing so close to the vines and we understand the reason in hindsight, but there are better ways to educate people of this and better signage would have helped. Very disappointing!

What a little treasure this winery is.
The wines are nice. $5 tasting fee p/p is refunded when you buy a bottle.
Not a huge range to choose from, but is enough.
Sitting out in nature is the setting and is nice even on a bleak day we went. A view to the water, which is far, and a view to the vineyard.
I am not 100% sure but there was also a cute little dog that comes and says hello to you, looked as though it was the winery's little mascot.
Overall a nice experience, will be back on a warmer sunny day.

We received a voucher for two adult wine tasting experience. It was Friday 30th mid afternoon, there was another couple present, and a family with approx 7 people. We waiting about 4-5 minutes to be served (staff had not even acknowledged our presence before that even though we were standing at the counter). We handed over our voucher and also order bread and cheese, the staff member responded by saying in quite an abrupt tone - you'll be waiting a while I'm very busy and it's only me working. We proceeded to order and commenced the wine tasting. As the bar was full with the visitors we sat on the couch and walked over the bar to receive our next tasting (we were 100% NOT receiving table service). Upon requesting the next wine the lady proceed to tell me I should be paying for the bottle of wine and not receiving a free tasting as tasting are only done at the bar and not at the tables, but because she is busy she will let us off. I was quite shocked as we were not in anyone's way and we were probably making her life easier by being out of the way of the bar.
We received no information about the wine and honestly I just felt like a pain in her butt. Between our tasting she would sit down and it appeared to be such as effort for her to serve us. We didn't finish the tasting as her hospitality was just awful.
We requested to pay for the bread and she quite blankly said no efpos under $20, we had no cash at all on us. At this stage I was over it and simply said well if you want my money I have to pay by card and she said you will have to buy something then. I stated I didn't want to buy any of wine (purely because our experience wasn't nice) and she continued that they receive a fee for every transaction and therefore we must buy something.
Tips to the owner:
this staff member made us feel uncomfortable and an inconvenience, she clearly is not suited to hospitality industry and if she had knowledge regarding the wine, she shared none with us.
We felt we were treated poorly because we used a voucher and you did not receive any money off us (well in the end you did)
Also you need a sign placed at the counter stated no efpos under $20, especially if you are going to force customers to purchase wine to increase their amount spent.
I would not return to this winery, however with a different staff member it may have been a different response.

My wife and I visited the winery for a light lunch and accompanying wine. We entered the tasting room/ lounge/ dining area where three people were tasting. We sat at a table and waited for someone to acknowledge our arrival/welcome us. After a long wait a man emerged from the kitchen, looked at us and walked toward a women he knew in the room and started a friendly conversation about a news article in the local paper. He took no notice of us and neither did the woman who could see us from behind the tasting bar. After some more time I walked to the tasting bar and found an A-4 sheet outlining the wines on offer. I took it back to the table to discuss this with my wife. Eventually we were the only two visitors in the building. The woman that had been in charge of tasting came around the bar and starting clearing tables, including all those around us. Still no word was forthcoming as to how or what we should do to taste or order lunch. In disgust we left and headed to Cowes where we enjoyed a pizza with an ocean view and friendly staff. Perhaps the staff at Purple Hen Winery should learn that running a venture in the hospitality business means to be inviting and hospitable.

They served the wine without any background or explanation until we started asking questions and then very basic answers. We had to ask for water and they didn't even rinse the glasses after each serving. Wine far too expensive for the little quality. Staff is kind an the place is beautiful, but skip it if you want to learn something about wines but do go it you just want to have a glass of wine in a beautiful setting in a sunny day. They only have tasting and you can not visit the place.

What a lovely place to visit. Cosy fire, lovely cheese platters and delicious Sauvingon Blanc. Very welcoming hosts. Certainly worth a visit.
