- TravellerMelbourne, Australia17,411 contributionsOne of the most famous places in AustraliaMy wife and I drove along various parts of the Great Ocean Road recently during our holiday where we stayed for 2 nights at the Great Ocean Road Resort in Anglesea and another 2 nights at the RACV Resort in Torquay. This was the ninth time that I had driven along the Great Ocean Road over the years. By now, we have seen all the various highlights all the way from Torquay to Warrnambool from all our trips, most of them several times. We plan to visit again either next year, or the following year, as the views are spectacular.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 October 2023

Such a rich history in this part of Australia. Thank you Camille for a wonderful day…this trip is a must for those visiting Melbourne who want to get out of the city!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 December 2023
- James BNewcastle, Australia636 contributionsOne of the great drives to do in AustraliaThe main part to drive is between Warrnambool and Princeton and it is worth visiting all of the stopping points along the way from Bay of Islands, Bay of Martyrs, the Grotto, London Bridge, Twelve Apostles. Basically anywhere you see a tourist bus stopped, it’s worth stopping there. We enjoyed a beautiful sunny day and the scenery was stunning. All the main sites have good parking, even for caravans, so it is worth pulling over and taking some time to enjoy this wonderful part of Australia. Highly recommend!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024
- Whatisee2 contributionsGORIf you love nature head there. Try rock formation and oceans were breathtaking. Beware of crowds and queues for the toilets. Bring some food, drinks and snacks along, save both money and time to look for restaurants. And the long travel between each spot, you need at least 12 hours on the road if you intend to seen highlights within the same trip. Very beautiful but strong wind, it can get cold. We got some rain too.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 June 2024
- CarloHelmondHelmond, The Netherlands725 contributionsTake your time and enjoyWe drove in from the Grampians. Just make sure that you take your time. You can rush by and make one stop and say that you have seen it all. But every stop is different and there are different things to see. We took all day to drive the Great Ocean Road. Made many stops (Bay of Islands, Bay of Martyrs, Grotto, London Bridge, Loch and Gorge, Thunder Cave, 12 Apostles, Lorne and of course the Memorial Arch. A great day. Taking pictures at the golden hour adds something to your memoriesVisited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 August 2024

The Great Ocean Road is not just coastal as it winds inland at times through small villages and valleys. We started at Torquay (Bells Beach) and drove through to South of Port Campbell (Bay of Martyrs), overnighting in Port Campbell. So much to see and experience along the way. Fantastic coastal formations, lighthouses, amazingly fresh seafood, pretty beaches but sadly no Koalas. :(

The Great Ocean Rd is one of those trips that everyone should do. Every bend in the road introduces you to another great vista. The drop off cliffs are spectacular and the colour of the ocean is the most glorious of blues. I would recommend taking 4 days to drive from Melbourne to Adelaide.

We took two days to travel from Melbourne to Port Fairy and this seemed about right. We travelled on a Sunday and Monday in mid January and it wasn't too busy with easy parking everywhere - maybe as a result of people being put off by the reports of poor air quality in SW Australia. Air was fine when we were on the road. We stopped at all the well known spots and all were beautiful. The weather was perfect which helped - lots of flies from the Apostles onwards - worth investing in a fly net. Very highly recommended.

My wife and I drove along The Great Ocean Road during our recent holiday in Torquay, where we stayed for two nights at The Sands Golf Resort.
This was our eighth drive along the Great Ocean Road, as it is probably the most scenic drives in Australia. We visited a few places that we had not stopped at in our previous drives.
In Fairhaven, we stopped to have a look at the famous "Pole House", which is a house built upon a pole with panoramic views of the ocean. Accommodation in the Pole House starts from $950 a night, with a minimum booking of two nights. We might stay here sometime in future, for the experience.

This is really one of the top highlights of Australia. Take your time to stop at most viewpoints which are clearly sign-posted. In case you have ample time take a breathtaking helicopter flight! In my opinion this is one of the most spectacular coastal roads I have ever seen. Do not miss this attraction!

Words can’t really describe the beauty of the Great Ocean Road, nor can they adequately describe the lack of driving skills exhibited by many tourists visiting the area! This one thing alone takes away from much of the enjoyment. But back to the natural beauty- it’s undeniably beautiful and breathtaking. Every stop along the way is almost picture post card perfect. It had been some time since last making this trip so I was both surprised and pleased at the facilities now available at the various stops. My greatest concerns are the questionable driving skills and the footprint being left on the environment by the almost overwhelming number of visitors. I fear for the sustainability of the attraction of the Great Ocean Road if the growing number of tourists continue to trend at their current rates.

Second time doing this coastal trip and still amazed.
A must do. There are so many lovely stops on the way. Lorne is quite lovely and the 12 apostles is a highlight of the trip.
Even on a day with bad weather, it’s still unbelievably beautiful.

The feeling has been out of the world. Camera can do no justice for the soothing nature view we had. Appreciate the infrastructure and all of the people involved in maintaining it so well. Once in a life time experience, never miss a chance to do it . Will Also request all the tourists and travelers to behave responsibly and ensure to maintain the serenity of this place

My wife and I did the Great Ocean Road in reverse on a one-day trip from Melbourne. We did not have the time option of taking it slowly and also feel that even if we did have extra days we wouldn't have done it any differently.
Do it in reverse!! All the talk about avoiding the crowds is real. If you want to get good shots without a bunch of random heads/hands/shadows in your shots go early and do it in reverse. This is how we did it. Left our hotel in Melbourne early in the morning and hit these sights:
1. the bay of islands
2. the grotto
3. london bridge
4. Loch Ard Gorge
5. 12 Apostles
6. Kennet River nature walk
7. Aireys Inlet lighthouse
We stopped for lunch, dinner, and twice for bathroom/petrol breaks. We left around 6am and got back to our hotel room at 830pm. It is a long day and lots of driving but with many stops to keep you energized and amazing views. We have wonderful photos and great memories from the trip.
***If anyone has been to Maui this really reminded us of the Australian "Road to Hana" lots of driving, lots of stops, beautiful sights****

We traveled in the Australian autumn (in May). The beaches were uncrowded and the colors of the landscapes less impressive. This is more interesting if you spend at least 48 hours there in the summer to enjoy swimming. Furthermore, we did the route in one day, between 9:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., a minimum to see everything but it is very tiring.

Any good restaurant recommendations along the GOR from Melbourne to Adelaide? We’re driving six days so not too much of a rush. We are not fussy eaters either.

Hi Just wondering how far the Artillery Rocks are from Cumberland River, Torquay, please. Thanks in anticipation, Maureen.

Would you recommend driving or taking a tour? We're staying in Melbourne.
Written 2 March 2020
Taking the tour gives you insights you won’t get.
The views are spectacular but endless so a tour takes it to the next level of context.

i m looking for a good package for my parents but they can t walk for long time so is this trip suit for them?
Written 27 October 2019
There are lots of ways to enjoy The Great Ocean Road. Whilst some of them do involve walking and stairs, there are plenty of other options. For example, concrete walkways from main visitor centre are completely accessible, there are many good lookouts only a few steps from carparks, or you can even take a helicopter tour.

I would book a night at Lorne-at Foreshore site- nice area and beach.
Then book night at Port Campbell caravan park- check out Apostles, etc. On the way between these grab Fish n chips at Apollo Bay Harbour and do some Koala spotting at either Kennett River or on the way to Cape Otway Lighthouse.
Finish with a night at Warrnambool and visit harbour and stay down at Lake Pertobe area- great area to wander. Also take in the whales at Logan’s Beach- the southern right whale nursery.

Can I visit it in one day? How long is the drive there from the city
Written 8 August 2019
Hi, yes it's possible to do it in one day, but better if you do it in a couple of days so you can take your time and really enjoy it. Will you be coming from Melbourne? If so there are tours that take you along the Great Ocean Road, a really good way of seeing it without having to drive yourself, you can sit back and relax and hear all about the area. Whatever you decide to do enjoy your trip :)

Recommendations for all inclusive package of 5-6 days self drive ocean road, nice accommodation, great food, mid size car, flying from Brisbane? Tk u.
Written 4 August 2019
Lilianen,
If I were doing the GOR- I’d look at a couple of days Lorne, two days near our place- Wattle Hill(close to Twelve Apostles) and a night at Port Fairy to finish it off. Rental car would be personal preference hired at airport/MELBOURNE and then use trip advisor for meal recommendations.
We run accommodation- named Southern Anchorage and if you email us I’ll send helpful notes for the area we send guests who book- and you can decide from there.

Hi, so if you want to spend 2-3 nites on the road in a camper, during the winter months June, what are your options of using bathroom facilities? How often, availability, etc. thank you!
Written 19 June 2019
There are small towns with businesses and cafes along the way, and public facilities at most beaches and tourist attraction parking areas such as at the Twelve Apostles. There are multiple caravan parks that I imagine you can find via Google. The one at Kennett River is notable for often having koalas behind it.

Hi. How much time we need to reserve to enjoy Great Ocean Road (start and end in Melbourne) ? Does it make sense to make it one day trip ?
Written 2 June 2019
You can do it in a day however to enjoy the amazing scenery I would allow 2 days! That way you can take your time and appreciate what you’re seeing.
