Our tour manager arranged for a special reserved trip on this "train* for our group and it was thoroughly worthwhile. It picked us up outside our hotel and then took us around the harbour before going through the town and up the hillto the high points. Smooth enough if a bit jerky on the the raod it then went onto some rough and quite steep tracks to some fantastic viewpoints above the town and the nearby bay. Despite the steepness it never felt unsafe despite quite a bit of bumping about. Commentary was in English as we were a completely English group. We enjoyed it thorougly but would not recommend it for anyone uncertain about heights and looking down, or pregnant! The trip lasted about an hour and three quarters and ended as the sun was starting to set which gave the scenery added beauty. As healthy 70 somethings, it was one of the best experiences of our week.

An exciting way to see Roses as the trains go around narrow and high places. On the longest trip, 2 hours, you get spectacular views from the highest point in the hills.

We went along to book a ticket from the kiosk in Pl. de les Boxtes (in front of the Tourist Office) having picked up a brochure form the hotel. We had decided on the two-hour trip to Puig Alt but, unfortunately, for ‘operational reasons’ the train was not running that route on that day. Undeterred we took the one-hour trip to Puig Rom, which had fantastic views all around the bay and through the little villages clinging to the mountain sides. It would be advisable to take a bottle of water and a hat as it can be quite hot up the mountain. As the train goes “off roading” it can get quite dusty, particularly if it is very windy. It was an exhilarating ride, the seats are quite comfortable and the commentary is in different languages and very clear. This train is bigger than most ‘seaside trains’ with big wheels and a huge engine. There are five tours in the brochure: 1. Puig Rom (Panoramic view of Roses and the Bay with the plain of Emporda and Canigo on the horizon) 1 Hour 10 Euros. 2. Falconera (View of the Bay of Roses with the Medes Islands and the Montgri massif in the distance) 1 Hour 10 Euros. 3. Joncols (Marvellous coves and rocky coasgtlines between the sea and the mountain. Nature Reserve) 2 Hours 20 Euros. 4. Badia (Panoramic view of one of gthe best bays in the world and the Natural Parks that surround it) 1.30 15 Euros. 5. Puig Alt (The highest mountain (498m) if the Cap de Creus peninsula with views of the sea on both sides) 2 Hours 20 Euros. It was money well spent to ride around and view the lovely town of Roses and its environs and would be good to do all the tours if you are in Roses for any length of time.

The Roses Expres covers five different routes. Most of them taking you out into the country. The tractor units looks rather powerful. You will see why when you get out of town. It's good idea to wear sunglasses etc. because it can be very dusty. Only wear beard oil if you wish to gain a light brown look. I also keep my camera covered while moving off road. Because a lot of the tracks are rough the ride can be bumpy. We intend trying another route the next time we visit Roses.
