The desert was one of the major highlights of and inspirations for our March 2022 trip to Morocco. Our tour company, Morocco Key Travel, set up the camel ride with Hamad and had our luxury camp accommodations waiting after the ride. We left the rocky start of the desert at mid-day and arrived at the camp just before full sunset. The desert was gloriously calm and quiet, just stunning. And I'm a rivers gal!
Our guide had the perfect place to stop for photos and was a great sport. He hobbled our camels when he took group photos of us, and the lead camel led the others away to chew at grass.
We got to keep the blue scarves given to us and had help tying them before getting on the camels. The camel kneels down, you climb onboard, and hold on as it stands up again. It's a lot higher than a horse, but the gait is similar, but no direction is needed from the rider. Just rock along and enjoy.
At our campsite, we got to do some sandsurfing on a shorter dune. So cool!

The Erg Chebbi dunes are fantastic and were the highlights of our trip in Morocco. The dunes were so authentic and it felt like you were walking (or the dromedary) in the most beautiful picture. The dunes are so special with the dromedaries and the fantastic colors, great camps, beautiful sand and great animals. This is an absolute must-do whenever in Morocco.

Erg Chebbi is just the desert in Morocco but many people believe it is Sahara. It is wrong, however, that the Sahara begins first in Algeria or in Western Sahara.
In any case, the dunes Erg Chebbi are fantastic, they play with many different colors from red to white, gray etc, depending on the light and the weather. If it is sunny the color is red but if it is thunderstorm for example or approaching rain the color changes to white or gray.
Sand dunes are high up to 150 m in some places, wide 5-10 km and long 25-30 km.
Today there are no camps in sand dunes and I think it works well so that people do not destroy the environment. But you can take a camel ride around there and enjoy the trip or you can just walk on foot. It's fun even though it's harder to walk in the sand.

After experiencing Erg Chegaga, Erg Chebbi didn't appear to be as exciting. There are so many houses, shops and roads near the sand dunes which made this desert not as natural as Erg Chegaga.
There were no off-road driving and we were dropped off by the road to be transferred to camel ride. We rode our camels for over an hour to our luxury camp. En-route, we climbed up a sand dune but unfortunately, the sunset was not as stunning as that seen in Erg Chegaga.

Watching the sunset from Erg Chebbi dunes is an amazing experience. However, though it was the prettiest place We saw on our desert tour. We would highly recommend Erg Chebbi for its pristineness and off the beat path. Star gazing in the warm spring evening was out of this world. it was fabulous!

Erg Chebbi Dunes are in Merzouga Desert, in Morocco. In fact, this part is the most beautiful in the Merzouga Desert due to here you can see the real desert with sand and dunes. We came here with my 4 years old daughter and we did a 1h 30min walk on a camel. It was a wonderful experience for my 4 years daughter (and also for me). In this time we enjoy a lot with the walk, the sunset (fantastic!), the wonderful views of desert and the natural border with Argelia and obviously taking a lot of photos. Really one of the top moments in the travel. Also, we walk until our haima in the desert and we stay alone during all walk, so it was very quite and magic (we seem the 3 Wisemen!) ;-)

It was an amazing experience! The place is gorgeous, the camel ride at the sunset was magnificent! I really enjoyed the camp also. Beautiful setup, delicious food, and so may stars in the sky at night! I would highly recommend the tour!

Stayed one night in a desert camp .No idea which one as it was part of a small group tour from UK.
Selfishly, happy that tourism really low ebb following lockdowns ,there were no other tent camps occupied so at night it was total silence under the dome of the starry night sky.
The camels were well behaved on the way there and I wish I had opted to ride them back rather than use petrol in a 4 x 4 .
The camp staff cooked super tagine.Beds were comfortable, toilet tent clean and functioned reasonably well.
Cannot wait to go back again sometime soon.

One's experience and memory of Erg Chebbi -- a large pond of sand in an otherwise stony desert -- depends on the season. Being there in late November/December meant that the sand underfoot was always cool, even cold at night. It isn't the stereotype of a desert.
The best way to walk the dunes is to go barefoot -- the sand is remarkably soft and at places you sink down past your ankles -- so temperature matters.
I think the cool season would be better. One has less of dehydration issues (there are no facilities once out among the dunes), and it is easier to keep warm against the cold than to try to counter the heat of summer.
Please, please do not hire the "quads". They make a fiendish noise (and can be heard miles away!) and I suspect they damage the dunes -- quads are environmentally irresponsible. The silence of the desert is precious, not just to visitors who want to appreciate nature but to the wildlife who live there who need to hear their prey or enemies coming; don't spoil it for all of us.
Walk, sand-surf or camel-trek the dunes, like people have done for generations.
There appears to be two main types of accommodation: stay in guest houses/hotels in the villages of Hassi Labied and Merzouga which are at the edge of Erg Chebbi, or stay in desert camps some distance away (from the villages) among the dunes.
The guest houses and hotels naturally have better facilities (e.g. phone signal, wifi, electricity to charge your camera, hot water), while the camps -- I'd say no facilities at all, barely a portable toilet and a tent -- no airconditioning, no heating. Your choice will depend on how prepared you are to rough it out.
I stayed two nights in a camp (see my review "Hassilabied: Moda Camp") amid the dunes. It is possible to stay one night and just see one sunset and one sunrise, but I don't think one fully gets into the slow serene vibe of the desert unless a full day is spent there. I don't think my two nights were too much. It is also possible for your hotel/camp owner to arrange a day tour to surrounding places, e.g. a Berber nomad's camp, if you don't want to be stuck amid the dunes the whole day.
Since I stayed in a camp right among the dunes, the sand and dunes are literally at my tent's doorstep. I could wander out anytime I wished. As for those who stay in hotels in Merzouga or Hassi Labied villages, I'm not sure how much time they will get to be among the dunes. I guess for them, it's more organised, perhaps as a camel trekking tour -- organisation has its own advantages and disadvantages.

This is the place where you can truly experience the desert that you see in the movies. Undulating sand dunes, camels gracefully pacing accross the sand, silence and a night in a million star hotel. Most desert is not like this - it's mostly endlessly flat, stony and boring, but a few places, like Erg Chebbi make the fantasy real.
Bab Africa took us there from Fes and arranged for a local Berber camel handler to take us into the dunes where we stayed in an overnight camp and ate dinner. Youssuf from Bab Africa did all the negotiating which saved us the hassle. They also arranged somewhere for us to shower and have breakfast the next day.
We watched the sun set on the way to camp, snowboarded down sand dunes, admired the stars, enjoyed local music round a fire, adn in the morning rose early to see the sunrise before heading back to Merzouga.
Be warned, the desert at night in December is seriously cold - probably around zero centigrade!

Hi, I am trying to plan a 2 day, 1 night desert trip to Merzouga. I am flying into Errachidia (EHR) and was planning on hiring a car to take me to the bus pick-up in Merzouga... (I would also book pick-up in Errachidia if that is possible). Rachid A, I see you are very responsive on tripadvisor and I would love to know what company you work for and how I book with your team! You have posted a few different email addresses and am not sure which one applies to me. Thank you!

Hallo

Friendships Frankreich

hello, my friend and I are planning to go to morocco in December and wed like to explore the desert area thoroughly. But none of us knows how to drive...is it convenient to explore the area without license? Like is there any option to follow a group or any public transportation?

The best is if you organize your trip with the travel agency or just took a taxi to bring you there. In Merzouga village or Hassilabied village you can stay in kasbah and they arrange a camel ride and sleeping in desert tent. Enjoy beautiful dessert Erg Chebbi!

Hello, I would like to spend a night or 2 if possible in the Sahara desert at Erg Chebbi in mid March.
We would be driving from Marrackech, are the roads ok at that time? and how the weather would be like?
Any comment/advice welcome!
Written 19 January 2015
Hello Soosadia,
Month of March is a perfect time to travel in the desert. As it's spring time it's neither cold nor hot. All the road are fine and you can have some stop if you want to have lunch or take some photos on the way. I advise you t bring mineral water with you, hand sanitizer or baby wipes for your comfort. You have already book in a Hotel or Riad for your desert tour? If not i have some friends who owns a Riad with their deser tour in Merzouga. Thank you.

Hi, can you remember what tour guide/operator you used for your visit to the desert?

Hi Bernie,
We had Camels House and they have Camp camels house also in the desert where we stayed last August and September2014. I just came back from my latest desert tour last January 4 to January 9, 2015 where they made our stay in Camels House very comfortable and friendly and very hospitable. And we enjoyed our two night in Camp Camels house in the desert.
