One can tour the place only with a guided tour. We entered with the tour but to our surprise, the tour was only in Dutch. For non Dutch speakers they give printed summary of what the guide is saying. So, you enter the place, the guide is speaking in Dutch, after two minutes you finish reading the summary and you just stand there waiting for her to finish her explanation. We stepped out after a few minutes and asked for out money back but they refused to return it. A waste of time and money

You can only visit the castle on a tour. Our tour lasted 1.5 hours. The guide did detailed explanations in Dutch, no English. We only speak English and knew the tour was in Dutch, but we stood around an unusually long time waiting for the Dutch explanation to be finished. The English handouts were not very good. The one I had was a short version compared to the one my wife had. Castle just was no that great.

This castle with its interesting gardens is where Belle van Zuylen, famous 18th century writer (in French!) lived. Were interesting and in a beautiful position on the river, the ideal bicycle outing (though the is a bus going there as well). Good restuarants around.

Slot Zuylen is well preserved and maintained. Strolling through the many nicely decorated rooms and romantic venues, you feel how live has been in this era. The garden is worth a walk, even as the weather doen't permit it. We had the luck to watch a falconer.

We passed here on our way to the lakes (direction of Amsterdam) and though I always appreciate a nice castle, I think I would probably not have bothered as a single destination. I appreciated to read up on the history, and the castle looks very elegant from the outside, but other then a quick look inside and a nice walk around the beautifull garden, I do not think it was worth it. Special warning; do not drink the coffee in the cafe section. You might not live to tell. So all in all: pass by if you have a chance but do not bother to make this a special destination. Do as the locals (we did not), rent a bicycle to go there. Just as the famous poem of Konstantinos Kavafis says (Ithaka): the journey is more important then the destination :-)

Quite some ordeals where this castle had to go through during the past centuries, but nowadays it's a really beautiful museum-castle.

During the guided tour through this magnificvent castle, history comes to life, lots of interesting figures lived in this castle, with, for me, the most important and well known one in the 18th century: Belle van Zuylen. She wrote 'Le Noble', a satiric novel about strange habits of the noblemen of those days. She was well educated and interested in lots of subjects. Her books are available in the museumshop.
You can visit 2 floors with beatiful furniture.

The garden is a gem, volunteers maintain the garden and respect the different aspects that are added to the garden in different era's.

Enjoy a nice cup of tea in the former linen room, and when the weather is good, you can take your tea outside, to the terrace.

Arriving at Zuylen Castle with friends from Antwerp on a Saturday noon we were told the next guided tour was fully booked. So we bought a ticket for the 1.30 p.m. tour (13 euros per person) and went for lunch. If you are pressed for time, it is advisable to book in advance. When the guide came to fetch our group she grumbled because it exceeded the maximum of twenty by a few persons. Since we were all individual travellers, that wasn’t our fault. Before entering we were given a long explanation, in Dutch, of the rules of the visit (do not touch, do not lean, etc.) as if we were a bunch a toddlers on a first cultural outing. In a way this was funny because we have been admitted to the richest castles in Europe without warning.

Because the Asian tourists standing next to us looked lost, one of us spontaneously provided them with a rough English translation in a low voice. For some reason, the guide objected to this, although the tour was only in Dutch. Addressing the whole group, she remarked in an angry voice: ‘I see we have a second guide now’. Embarrassed the Asian tourists turned away and the translation stopped. Visitors who didn’t understand Dutch – quite a few in our group - were provided with a simple handout and had to stand around waiting till the guide finished speaking in Dutch before they could proceed to the next room. It’s not allowed to roam freely.

On the whole, we didn’t find the visit of this castle worth the money. The 18th century appearance of this red brick summer residence, with its moat and corner turrets, seems to come straight out of a fairy tale and makes for nice pictures. Inside we saw nothing particularly attractive, valuable or interesting. The explanation provided amounted mainly to a long list of successive owners and inhabitants, whose portraits still hang on the walls but whose names we immediately forgot. We had expected to learn more about writer Isabelle de Charrière (Belle van Zuylen to the Dutch), who lived in the castle but here name was only mentioned in passing. Only later, looking at the castle’s website, did we realise we hadn’t even seen the whole castle but had been shown a selection of rooms.

Our advice, especially to tourists who don’t understand Dutch , would be to have a look at the castle’s outside, but to skip the expensive visit. People with mobility issues should also be aware there is no lift and there are quite a few stairs to climb. Unlike another TA reviewer, we found nothing wrong with the coffee served at the museum café in the former carriage house. Before leaving we also took a walk in the small castle garden (1,5 hectare), which isn’t freely accessible (3.5 euros). The garden has an interesting crinkle crankle wall (serpentine wall) said to be the longest in the Netherlands.

If you only visit the gardens, the cost is 3.50 euro each. Was it worth 3.50? The castle is beautiful, as is the moat and gardens. Everything seems very well maintained. But I don't think you should make the journey here if you aren't going inside the castle.

Why didn't we go inside? The tour is only in Dutch. Other reviewers say that the hand-out with English translations isn't very good. We really like castles, but we didn't think we would get anything out of the tour.

If you only speak English: I recommend skipping this. It is beautiful, but then everything in The Netherlands is beautiful.

The guided tour was nice informationwise, the guide itself wasn't so friendly, as were the people in the restaurant.
Besides the Slot you can also walk around the tower which is nice and see some traditional Dutch houses.
