Horseback riding in the Giara di Gesturi is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You feel like you could be in any era is history and nothing has changed. It is a little tricky to organize because it is something that is very "Italian"-- meaning not organized at all!!! The man who runs the horses just hangs out at the entrance with his horses loose in the Giara. He sits in his car and waits for clients. My boyfriend is Sardinian and grew up there, as well as his family lives there still, and no one knew any information about this, however, I insisted I had read it somewhere so I would not give up. Well, he was glad I didn't because he still talks about what an amazing experience it is. The guide, Gianni Orru', only speaks Italian and Sardinian, but he will still take you out, you just don't get the added benefit of three generations of horsemen from the Giara (my boyfriend was constantly translating for me)...It took a girl from Los Angeles to show a Sardinian the Giara! But I would definitely go back again, even without a translator, because the beauty and mystic of the wild horses needs no translation. The cost was nominal, I think 50 euro total for 2 hours / 2 people. If you want to call him to make sure he is there or to make a reservation, be sure the caller speaks Italian because he really speaks zero English (or any other language).

This trip was a memorable one.We were 2 families together with 3 kids,it was a January afternoon. We felt transported into a fairytale as we saw old,old moss covered stones, virtually untouched woods and wild horses with shiny coats ,long bushy manes and tails.there were cork oak trees, some of them over 400 years old; we were told, by our guide Dirk from "Secrets of Sardinia ".we enjoyed a picnic snack of a mozzarella sandwich and a bottle of local Sardinian wine at a lovely spot, straight out of a movie like Hobbits or Alice in Wonderland. So if you are that kind of a person who loves pristine, green, landscapes and hilly woods, this is for you.

We visited at the start of may and the area was stunning. The lakes were covered with flowers, there were loads of other flowers and we saw lots of groups of wild horses. Quite simply it was one of the most beautiful places I have visited. Take your time - go for a walk or ride a horse - and enjoy wild sardinia.
Practical info.
Having struggled to find out much information on the Giara on the web went via Gesturi and up the hill (well marked) on a good road to a car park at the end of the road. At the car park there was a small information centre where it was possible to buy a map - if this is not open do not worry as the paths are well marked. We followed a round trip from the car park which was about 5km and flat - just head out the car park beside the information centre and walk along the big track. At some point you will be signposted back to Gesturi.

Our trip to the Giara di Gesturi was an absolute highlight!
The whole plateau is divided into multiple parts - Gesturi is only one of the access points and communal owners of the land. We started out there and were glad we did due to the good pathways, maps and bikes (see below).
The whole Giara di Gesturi is home to wild horses, goats and cows, all of which we met on our 2-3 hr trip. Of course this is nature so no guarantee, but there were plenty of occasions.
The whole Gesturi area has good pathways and several signs - it wouldn't be easy to get lost here...We went to the Tuili area from there and pathways become more rough - possible for two untrainied office workers in their thirties, but I can imagine others may have trouble. But then again the area gets a little wilder as well (btw. if you hear a LOT of bells - don't run away scared - thats likely just a herd of goats)...
In that area you can get go to the botanic garden (door, but always open - due to wildlife) or head to one of the lakes.
The lakes may or may not be dried out end of summer/autumn, but in almost every of them theres a couple horses.
At the parking lot, coming from Gesturi there is a small hut with a ranger - he can give you a map in several languages for a couple of EUR.
The best thing though is the bike rental at the same parking lot - just ask the guy in the hut:
- You can take any bike (don't expect brand new ones, but the will work well. Make sure it is safe!)
- If theres something to be done - he'll fix it
- have fun
- return bike and make a donation (we gave ~5 bucks per hour, but thats up to everyone)
Again: totally worth the 3 hr ride (and 3hr back...)!!

Giara di Gesturi is a high plaeteau. From the small city you drive up a small road to the top, where the parking place is. There are different ways which you can walk, also as a circle. You ll see a lot of cork trees and the wild horses. They are around in families of 4-7 horses. Sometimes you can spot them behind the trees, the other time they are walking near the road. At some places they drink and eat. Depending on the family you can get about 5 - 15 meters near them. Not many people around and everything is quite. The small round course takes you around 2 hours with 7 - 8 km. Its worth seeing it!

We visited this place in June, met only two people during the whole afternoon and really enjoyed it. We came from Tuili - it is very easy to take a road all the way up, which takes you to a parking place. There was a ranger at the entrance with all information and a map. There are no signs inside, but it is not difficult to walk around. It is a plateau with no big hills, so very comfortable for everyone. It is good to take water and some food and stay at least half a day. There are a few lakes with wild horses, lots of lizards, some snakes, flowers, cork trees...beautiful nature!

The best time to visit this is at early evening! You can take either an organized tour or with a serious offroad vehicle and own ingenuity. First you have to find the route on the Plateau. Which is not easy beacuse they are unmarked. After the ascent on the unpaved road you reach the Plateau and from there to the lakes, where comes the horses at the evening to drink the water leads a track with deep tracks, muddy bogholes, huge Stones.
After that you reach an idilic "parking space" from where the view to lake opens. We found the whole herd of horses, which are not bigger than ponies but have a Slim Body of horse. It is hard to describe the Feeling at that place. After turning the engine off, it was an absolute silence. The horses were grazing grass at the lake and drinking water from it, there the red sun was slowly descending down to the Plateau,
It hte absolute peace and silence we were admiring the horses untill the dark slowly fell down on the land.
After that we hit the road back to our time and place :)

This is a unique horse riding experience as gianni is a true horse man and knows the animals well. The stallion and foals all followed along as we went for a walk through the national park. More fun if you speak italian as there are many plants which local people eat which gianni points out. The horses are calm and relaxed. Great value. Make sure you ask an Italian to book as english is not spoken. The road to this place is beautiful with pre-historic relics to be viewed. A gps can be handy!

We spent 3 hours walking within Giara du Gesturi: very pleasant place, very relaxing; large paths across oak trees and these cute local horses. It’s a special place worth going, if you feel like relaxing in a sereine atmosphere...

Amazing place only an hour away from Cagliari.. For modern tourists it will feel like a time-travel, and if you’re afraid of mosquitoes or don’t like to sweat, stay away in the summer. For those who like nature and authentic people, a must-do.
The road from Gesturi is easy and there’s a big parking place. Get to know Antonio who repairs the bicycles and you’re good to go.. you can stay on the trails but if you don’t, the map is not very detailed.. you’ll have to watch out.. we didn’t follow the trails and got lost only a little :) but found the right track back very quickly..

Mi sa indicare i costi? I tempi entro cui prenotarla?
Grazie
