I would not recommend you pay to visit the castle. Even when the renovation is complete, it is still only a millionaire's mansion shaped like a castle. If we were told before we had paid that it only started to be constructed in 1922, there is no way we would have gone in. It's just the same as you visiting... More

We were disappointed to learn that the castle was closed on the rainy November day when we arrived. But the staff -- especially a man named Keith -- was so friendly and helpful that we still had a positive experience. He really went out of his way to help us and make us appreciate the National Trust. The view is... More

Amazing building with fantastic views over Devon. Serious renovation means two-thirds at least of building is still in rebuild phase. Only a few rooms are on show with very little furniture. Can't see it being finished for three years or so. Gardens are lovely, lots of rhodies so should be especially good in the spring.

Thank you for your review. We're now on the last third of the building restoration so next year you'll be able to see much more of the exterior of the castle. In March 2017 the inside of the castle will completely redisplayed, so I do hope that you come back and visit soon. More

Disappointing visit. The actual Castle grounds are not very dog friendly, so we went on the longer walk down to Fingle Bridge. We discussed our plans with the person on the reception desk, who gave us a map/route. At no point in this discussion did she explain that some of the walk was treacherous. We discovered too late, that there were... More

Beautiful Cafe. Lots of space with warm friendly staff. Cafe a little pricey and limited choice. Good info for dietary intolerances.

What makes this an interesting destination is the gigantic renovation project (make sure you take the Project Tour) to fix design errors and construction follies. The egotistical owner, Julius Drewe who made his fortune in the tea market, insisted on construction materials that, in the end, were no match for Mother Nature. Place started leaking within a year of completion... More

Whilst it is not the most beautiful building and a lot of it is covered in scaffolding at the moment, the project that is being undertaken there to stop water coming in through the roof is on an incredible scale! I hope the National Trust knew what they were taking on when the property was bequeathed to them by the... More

Not worth the entrance fee at the moment. House is very disrupted while renovations are going on. They should have reduced charge to non-members as a goodwill gesture until work is complete. Unless you are a local member, leave visit until 2017.
