About
Castle Drogo is situated high above the Teign Gorge. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. It looks ancient, but this remarkable building was only constructed 100 years ago, the last castle ever built in England.

Interesting place to visit.
Only thing that surprised us was little info regarding the hydro turbine in the Teign (down the valley) which was built when castle was built so way ahead of its time.
We did try to enquire but didn’t really understand the answers we got. Went to turbine house another day and again surprised that there were no notices or signage regarding the original plans or what is working now. There’s a sluice up river which moves regularly - why we never ascertained! Feels like they missed a trick there.

Gardens are stunning and lots of info in the rooms regarding the family who built it and lived there.
Friendly staff and clean toilets. 😀

Scaffolding gone at last 😃

Fantastic to see the castle without the scaffolding such a long period of repair work. Although Covid guidelines mean a shorter visitor route, there are plenty of beautiful rooms open to view.
Gardens stunning and walks open to explore the grounds and take in breathtaking views around the castle. Staff and volunteers very helpful and entertaining.

National trusts Castle Drogo, it’s a very nice place to go, it’s worth it if your a member but I don’t think I’d pay the entry fee if I wasn’t a member. The cafe is lovely and the food amazing. The caste it’s self was nice, filled with original items belonging to its previous occupiers. The grounds and gardens were beautiful as expected. Deffo worth a visit

We went here on the last day of our holiday. What a fantastic place to visit. Although some of the house was restricied, due to covid, they had quite a bit or it open. The gardens were kept really well, toilets clean and tidy. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Look forward to visiting again next June when we are next on holiday. Wpuld recommend anyone to visit.

Beautiful Walks, Gorgeous Scenery, Wild Horses
May 2021 • Couples
Lovely walks at Castle Drogo with some incredible view points. No requirement to pay to walk around the grounds which was wonderful as we went on a long walk for around an hour with no need to go into the castle and gardens itself.

On our grounds walks we saw 5 wild horses which were absolutely stunning. Very relaxed too - we have a golden retriever who the horses ignored entirely.

Highly recommend!

Exceeded expectations

We have visited several times in the past but the recent refurbishment of the castle and gardens exceeded expectations. It's stunning. The gardens are some of the best with the borders absolutely truly fantastic. Huge Kudos to the staff . Nice visitor center on arrival and great walking all around. A gem

A very quirky stately home

A real oddity - a C20 castle. It was well restored and well laid out with helpful volunteers who are more than willing to explain the history and peculiarities of the site. Well sited for walks at the head of the Teign Gorse

Castle Drogo Restored
May 2021
Having visited Castle Drogo during renovation work on the roof it was good to return to see the castle open again. On the first week after covid restrictions were lifted the cafe was very busy at lunch time, but the staff coped well with the queue.
We then walked down to the castle which almost looked like a new build after all the renovation. It was not so busy and were able to go straight inside to look around. There is a one-way system in place, but it was not crowded, and there was plenty of room to move around. Castle Drogo is one of our favourite NT properties, the rooms feel quite homely, and we particularly enjoy the 'below stairs' rooms.
With showers forecast we did not make our usual walk along the Hunters Path, but did look around the gardens, which had quite a bit of colour, and were well tended.
After a visit to the well-stocked shop we headed on to our hotel at Moretonhampstead.

Fantastic surprise
May 2021 • Couples
A great surprise, never knew of it before and having some time to spare we tried it.
It is incredible, house not open due to covid but frankly the gardens were absolutely incredible, so wonderful, so colourful and a variety of walks in the grounds to suit all ages and abilities.
Great and modern facilities.
I would say a must if you are in Devon.

Great walking area with friendly staff. Not crowded, good organisation with one way system, enough space for everybody. Good short walk through the castle and garden.
