About
Zbarazh Castle is one of the masterpieces of the fortification of the Ternopil region, widely known thanks to the events connected with the national liberation struggle of Ukrainian Cossacks, led by Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky.A fortified settlement has existed in Zbarazh in medieval times (original fortress is attributed to 1211), but after the destruction of the Mongol-Tatars for many centuries it wasn’t restored. Only in 1626, it was decided to build a strong castle-fortress on the castle hill, which had contributed to the defense of the city from the Russian troops, and the troops of the expanding Ottoman Empire, supported by the Crimean khan.

Founded in XIII century, the fortress was significantly rebuilt in the end of XVII – beginning of XVIII century. Used to be a seat of princes of Zbarazh, who owned huge territories in Ukraine. Then owned by Wiśniowiecki princes, junior branch of Zbarach family. Place of Siege of Zbarazh of 1649, during the war that led to establishment of the Ukrainian Cossack sovereign state. The castle looks rather like an overgrown provincial mansion of XVII century. The main value of the place is historical, so, it is recommended to do your reading before going to Zbarazh.

What to expect:
• A beautiful fortress that looks more like a huge XVIII century mansion (or a provincial palace)
• Accessible walls, towers and dungeons
• Exhibition of paintings

What not to expect:
• Not accessible by car. You will need to walk 0.5 mile through a nice park
• No costumed historical reenactment. No wax figures
• No well-guided audio tours or markings of places and exhibits
• No air-conditioned premises

Price of the entrance ticket: $1

Recommendations:
• Do your reading before coming

I have been there already three times between 2005-2013 and whenever I go there, it is nicer and improved. People who work there, mostly ladies, are very friendly. Moreover, the museum changes the exhibitions so if you been there, do not hesitate to go there again with your friends.

Zbarazh Castle is a nice attraction to visit especially with children. Entrance fee is UAH 25 for an adult and you won't be disappointed. Many castles in Ternopil region were ruined but this one was rebuilt and now works as a museum and place of Ukrainian cultural heritage. There are a lot of exhibitions inside the castle, I was particularly impressed by the statues of cossaks carved from linden by the artist.I'd also recommend to visit the park nearby and to see the walls which were built to protect the castle from the hostile tribes.

The castle was built in 1626-1631. Designed by Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi, construction work led by military engineer Andrea del Aqua, probably by G. van Peena and expensed by brothers Jerzy (George) and Krzysztof (Christopher) Zbarazkiy. Project of castle first has been described in V.Skamotstsy treatise "On the idea of a universal architecture" (another translation - "The idea of the overall architecture", Venice, 1615), was later embodied in Zbarazh. 1675 Castle captured and burned by the Turks.

If you have never paid 20 euro for non commercial video-you must visit this castle. Nightmare. Nevertheless the castle isn’t so bad. Make sense to take an excursion.
