Hradek, mentioned already in 1312, is a fortified castle palace of the town type. Nowadays it is the seat of the main exposition of the Czech Museum of Silver. The museum offers two guided tours and the main attraction is a visit to an authentic medieval silver mine.

The museum is uninspiring, but the visit down to the mine (altogether about 90 minutes) is pretty cool. Reservations are needed, I think, it's not for those with claustrophobia. You don a white cotton robe (similar to those used by medieval miners) and a helmet...More

Arrived 15 minutes before the museum was due to close, young man was rude and unhelpful, just wanted to lock up and go home. Started arguing with our guide, not impressed.

We took the underground/mine excursion for the second time and, again, we were very happy with the guide. Thanks! :)
