About
This square is situated on the site of the former moat between the Old and New Towns. The large open space near the medieval city centre inspired the construction of a number of significant buildings at the turn of the 20th century, such as the Municipal House (Obecní dům) near the Powder Tower (Prašná brána), the Hybernia House (Dům U Hybernů) and the Jiří z Poděbrad Barracks. A large part of the square is now a pedestrian zone connecting the two large shopping centres Palladium and Kotva.

Top ways to experience Republic Square
The area
Neighbourhood: Nove Mesto (New Town)
Nearly 700 hundred metres long, Wenceslas Square represents the most frequent and buzzing crossroads of the city. The National Museum in the upper part of the square watches over your spending spree in countless shops and retail stores lining the entire square, which ends at Na Příkopě, the most famous shopping street. When tired or broke, you can explore the city's underpasses, which can take you to the Old Town or to the courtyards of art nouveau houses with secret gems of greenery, white benches and rose bushes that provide unexpected peace in the midst of the city. Be sure to pay a visit to the traditional cafés, classic Czech pubs, cinemas and theatres. National Theatre near the river has a lot to offer to foreigners. Go to the river bank and enjoy live music and drinks while watching a sunset behind Prague Castle.

A large plaza now restricted to pedestrians only.
Wonderful architecture everywhere you look.
The Jan Hus statue is centered in the plaza - full of history and inspiring religious freedom.

Actual travel was in September 2019 but I’m just getting around to finishing this entry now.

I have been visiting Prague more times a year since 2014, and we often pass by Republic Square on our way to restaurants or attractions; in December we noticed a Christmas market with some food and craftsmanship stands, but immediately after NYE everything was gone despite the huge crowds of tourists. This is an interesting square surrounded by a museum, iconic landmarks, shopping malls and restaurants, it would be nice to see it more vibrant, but what I often notice are the several homeless people of drunkards sitting at its edges.
Pity.

Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) is a city square in Prague, Czech Republic, lying at the boundary of the Old Town and New Town. On the square, or in the very near vicinity, are these significant buildings: Kotva Department Store, Municipal House, Powder Tower, Czech National Bank and Palladium shopping mall.
We walked through this square many times between our hotel (the Marriott Old Town) and Old Town Square. When we visited in December, there was a thriving Christmas Market here.

Republic Square is one of the squares in the historical center of Prague. During its existence, it changed its name several times. It received its modern name in 1918 in honor of the proclamation of the Czechoslovak Republic.

We stayed in a hotel just down the street from this square so we walk to, thru and from every day. Great location where the Powder Tower, the Municipal House, the Museum of Communism and the Palladium Mall are located or every close by. All of the major trams have stops just off this square. There are restaurants both affordable and expensive near also. Always busy with tourists and locals so great for people watching!

Central square with beautiful buildings at the entrance to Prague's Old Town. The Palladium, one of the largest shopping centers in the Czech Republic, is located here. The Communism Museum is also just a few meters away. There are various cafes and restaurants where you can take a break, such as Cacao Prague.

It doesn't really matter how you stroll around the beautiful old town of Prague. You almost always end up at Republic Square at some point.
The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings. Thanks to its size, the crowds are spread out quite well.
If you fancy a bratwurst or Prague ham, you'll find what you're looking for at the food stalls, albeit at hefty prices.
A beautiful square. There's a small park on the edge that's quite quiet.

This square denotes the boundary between to Old and New towns.
It wasn't the greatest square I've ever been to.
It does have significantly historical buildings around it. The Kotva Department Store, Municipal House, Powder Tower, Czech National Bank and Palladium shopping mall.
It does have some nice restaurants and bars in and around it as well.
Worth a look if you're in the area.

My husband and I were touring Prague and this was one of our stops. Republic Square, (Namestic Republiky) is located between Old Town and New Town. It is a five minute walk from the Republic Square to the Old Town Square. The beautiful Municipal House dominates the Square. The Powder Tower, along with the Old Town Bridge Tower is the only existing part of the former Prague Old Town fortification. Lots of history, lots to see and explore. A farmer’s market is held here weekly. A wonderful photo op.

A little bit of a different flavor than the old town Square and the Newtown Square. But definitely worth the walk. Lots of shops and cafés and a large mall with food court. I would recommend going to the Square only if you have extra time. Obviously the old town Square and the Newtown would come first.
