Neighbourhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighbourhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

Ungelt Square is a small square by the Tyn Church. It is secluded and that is part of it's charm. On our most recent visit, we walked through and it felt like a hidden oases in comparison with the impossibly crowded Staromestske Namesti, just steps away.
The three architectural gems you want to look for while there:
The Granovsky Palace. It is a beautiful Renaissance building with loggia. It is decorated with sgraffitoes - wall paintings from Greek mythology and Bible. It has been lovingly restored in the late nineties.
The House at the Black Bear. It has a Baroque facade with statues of St. John of Nepomuk, St. Wenceslas and Florian. Built into the corner of the house is the chained bear.
The medieval House At the Golden Ring. It is now used as an exhibition space for the Prague City Gallery.
Lots of amazing architecture !
There are legends connected with the small square and the houses. Just ask the locals...
I recommend a visit in the Ungelt Square/ Tyn Courtyard ...It is time well spent...

All to be found around the very small Ungelt Square !
We always enjoy a short walk through to get away from the tourists crowds.
The 16th century Granovsky Palace has an elegant loggia, sgraffito and decorated walls depicting biblical and mythological scenes. It is an impressive example of the Renaissance architecture.
The House at the Black Bear has a large statue of chained bear in the corner and a statue of St. John Nepomuk above the entrance. Interesting combination. This charming building was converted into apartments for rent.
The Golden Ring House is a City Museum.
It is definitely worthwhile to spend a little time here, so close to the Staromestske Square, yet so much more peaceful.
Take a detour to discover these three very special houses ....

One of old town's oldest places. 13th/14th Century center of international trade. Used to store goods and pay customers. At night, merchants would drink and exchange news from home.
Today, upscale restaurants and some stores.
Not a lot to see but the history is compelling.

Ubgelt Square is a lovely little square that although overshadowed by the magnificent Old Town Square is still well worth checking out.
There is some really nice little architectural gens here with some lovely buildings and archways that give the square a gothic look especially at night.
As we go to The Dubliner Irish Pub on any trip to Prague we pass through this square and it still looks so pretty.
If your heading to this Irish Pub or on the Old Town Square then take a few minutes out to check out the square.

If not searching purposefully, Ungelt square is very easy to miss, unless you do some passage-diving for fun around Tyn church. This was exactly what I did, exploring various corners. The square is very attractive architecturally and there are several nice shops and restaurants. I especially liked botanical shop and Koh-i-noor shop. In the latter, I even bought myself a pencil to remember childhood – we used to value this brand very much.

Our hotel was located in this square. There is an Irish pub located here as well which make it a lively square at night. The restaurants here are nice as well and cheaper than going the 200 meters to the old town square.

This is a difficult to find courtyard near Tyn Church and Old Town Square. It is frequently called Tyn Square. The word "Tyn" means enclosure and at one time the area was an enclosed courtyard separate from the rest of the town. This area was a sanctuary for merchants and under the protection of the king. The word "Ungelt" is German and it means fee and relates to the customs paid by foreign merchants. These merchants transiting through Prague had to stay here for 3 days and first offer their merchandise for sale to the residents of Prague before leaving the city. Presently located in the square are shops, a restaurant and a gallery

I believe the Tyn Court is the same area that is referred to as the Tyn Courtyard or Ungelt Square, which is a small courtyard that is located near the Church of Our Lady Tyn, just off the main Old Town Square.
Historically, the Ungelt Square served as an inn for foreign merchants as early back as the 12th century it seems. Today, there are shops, restaurants, a hotel, artisan shops and a few historic buildings that can be seen. These include the 17th century Granovsky Palace and the House of Black Bear. At the House of Black Bear, you can find two interesting statues, one of St John of Nepomuk, which is similar but much smaller than the one found on Charles Bridge. The other is of a black bear in chains on the building corner. These two statues are what we remember most about the area.
Overall, we found the Tyn Courtyard to be a a quiet and somewhat interesting little area visit but not much of a priority unless you are in Prague for some time and have hit all the main attractions and hot spots.

Ungelt sqaure ( also called Ungelt Courtyard) was once a place where the merchants stayed. It is right next to the Tyn church, in the old town square. It is now preserved as a square with restaurants and various artisan shops.
