Your experience in Prague will never be complete if you do not see it from the top. Hillsides, stretched from the west to the north, provide spectacular views of greenish copper cupolas, narrow cobblestone streets, bridges connecting both river banks and green gardens from red-roof tops of centuries-old houses. Prague pulls you into its 1300 year old history. Walking up the hill or stairs to Prague Castle, the historical seat of Czech rulers and the majestic Saint Vitus Cathedral can leave you speechless (and out of breath). Luckily, plenty of terrace cafés overlooking gardens and beautiful parks are available to provide rest and a place to catch your breath again.

We actually took the guided tour, but you could easily stay for hours looking at everything. The stained glass windows, the organ, and everything is just so amazing. This is definitely a must see if you are in Prague.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- gk-lommelLommel, Belgium391 contributionsOut of this worldI have seen some magnificent cathedrals but this must be the best one very. The stained glass windows are complete works of art, each and every one of them telling a story. Absolutely amazing the workmanship in every single aspect of the building.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023

A great building of the gothic architecture located in Prague Castle. We tried to visit the castle on a late november saturday but learned that the closing hours have changed. Then we visited the next morning, sunday, but there was a ceremony so, tourist were not allowed. I would clearly suggest visiting the cathedral but mind the day and hour.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 December 2023
- Joyce JLiverpool, United Kingdom1,168 contributionsA beautiful architectural cathedralWe could see the cathedral from various locations around Prague and decided to take a tram there. Easy to get there via the tram network we hadn't realised that it was also Prague Castle Yes you do have to pay to get in but the basic ticket included 3 other entrances to other parts including St George's Basilica & the castle. It was a bit chaotic getting tickets there as large queues & there are lots you can add to it including audio equipment, guided tours, access to the tower, licence to take photos so it can work out quite expensive. We chose the basic entry fee which can be used over 2 days but only 1 entrance to each location. You can see the cathedral from the entrance to the grounds but it's only when you get through the archway that the size hits you. The cathedral is stunning, yes it was quite busy but everyone seemed very respectful and moved around quietly. Beautiful stained glass windows throughout lots of very old private burial. areas. We really enjoy the peace and tranquility of a church or cathedral even though we are not religious we still live the history and architecture. You are able to walk around the interior and exterior of the cathedral which gives you the perspective of the size & grandeur. Definitely worth a visitVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 December 2023
- Barbara1407Enfield, United Kingdom104 contributionsWonderful stained glass, bitterly cold. This is an amazing Cathedral but what was outstanding for me was the stained glass windows. I've visited many Cathedrals, mostly in UK but also abroad but I have never seen stained glass anywhere which is as wonderful as this, nor so much of it. I don't know whether we were just unlucky on the day but it was freezing cold inside the Cathedral - it was a cold day but we were dressed for it and hadn't been cold outside! Maybe the heating had failed but there was nothing to say so? Maybe it's always freezing inside? But the stained glass made up for being cold! Also climbed the tower, great views, well worth it.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023

A large cathedral with a beautiful interior and lots of information inside. It can get crowded so definitely try to go early in the day. Your ticket also grants entry into the Prague Castle and other locations, but the cathedral is certainly the highlight of them all.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- TommoMelbourne, Australia56,017 contributionsGreat views from the towerThe Saint Vitus Cathedral located in the Prague Castle grounds is a Catholic cathedral in Prague, and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. Until 1997,it was dedicated only to Saint Vitus. It is of Gothic architecture, and is the largest church in the country. The cathedral contains the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors. Do pay the admission fee to go to the top of the tower to see some awesome panaromic views.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2024

- annminkyUnited States3,937 contributionsHoly Steps! The cold, snowy weather won’t stop me from visiting Prague. This is my 5th time to visit the city and 1st time to visit the Cathedral. My brother and sister in law told me to keep walking past the cathedral and not to look back yet. They asked me to stop and turn around. Wow! Spectacular sight. I was amazed how huge and impressive this cathedral was. My sister in law and I climbed the south tower. I think it was 288 spiral steps. The view from the top was jaw dropping. Such a beautiful city. Loved every moment I was there.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 March 2024

When visiting the castle grounds definitely take the time to enter the Cathedral. You can enter the primary area at the entrance for free or walk around the full lower area and/or tower for a fee. The stained glass windows in the art nouveau style, are incredible, especially when the sun is out. A building which looks pretty dark and austere from the outside becomes a riot of colour and light from inside. Beautiful frescoes on the ceiling also, so don't forget to look straight up!

A stunning cathedral architecturally. You can enter part of it for free but you need a ticket to enter fully.
However, you cannot sit down on any of the pews to just take it all in for a few minutes, reflect or even pray, as all of the pews are roped off. This was the first and, I hope the only time, that we have come across this in a cathedral. Such a pity in a sacred place.

Great architecture, many amazing details. But do not trust the website info, the old people who works in the Cathedral may close early, kick tourists out without a info, they dont even speak English which they work in the main touristic point. If you go in the morning too long line is there, If afternoon they might close the building anytime, even though the website says that they are open till 6pm.

If you could only come to this church and not enter the castle (both on the same ticket) you would definitely have seen the highlight of this part pf the city; the castle is rather disappointing(compared to many other castles I have seen).
If you don't have a ticket you still can access the inside pass a few meters from the doorway which will give you a chance to glance the inside, although it would be better to have a ticket and walk around the church to see the majestic interior in detail.
Amazing

Admission Ticket required, and expect a line to go in. We were in line around the corner and half way down from the entrance, and waited maybe half an hour to get in (not terrible). When we came out, the line was much shorter: recommend you either be there for opening time or later afternoon for shorter lines.
Lots to see inside this beautiful, historic cathedral. Bell tower on side is a separate, additional admission ticket, but nice climb (not for the weak hearted) and views at top.

600 years in the making. One of the most beautiful Cathedrals in the world.
I have visited many times over the years and can't help but wish sometimes for the old times, when the area was less crowded.
Those old times, when I came to attend a classical concert in the Cathedral many years ago, remain a wonderful memory.
Peoples opinions differ, whether it is worth it to buy a ticket. If you have the time and money, don't miss it.
The Mucha stained glass window. The solid silver (tons of pure silver ) St. John Nepomuk tomb . The king Wenceslas Chapel. The amazing architecture.
Attending Sunday mass is free. The doors close at the start. It is an unforgettable experience.
My husband and I stayed in the hotel Savoy close by, for the first part of our trip.
That made it much easier to select the most convenient time to sightsee the whole Castle area and selectively avoid the crowds ....
We come back time and time again ....

A stunning Cathedral and lots of beautiful things to look at. If you go near Christmas it maybe free entry which made it that much nicer. They ask the gentlemen to remove their hats as a mark of respect when you go in. So lovely art work in one of the rooms so be sure to take it all in.

I spent 9 days in Prague and I have the opportunity to see many sites. To me the most impressive ones are: the Loreta, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, the Spanish Synagogue, the Cathedral of Saint Pater and Saint Paul at Vyserhad, the Municipal House, and the St. Vitus Cathedral.
This was my second trip to Prague. In my first visit, I took a tour, which was a mistake. Majority of tours take you only to the main entrance and you will have a very limited visit to the cathedral that only allows you to see some windows and the roof. I strongly recommend to pay the ticket to visit the cathedral. The ticket is not expensive and allows you to see 4 sites including the Royal Palace, the Saint George Basilica, the Golden Line, and the St, Vitus Cathedral. You may spend a whole afternoon visiting these sites and all of them are impressive. The ticket costs approximately 10 dollars. I arrived at noon on a beautiful Monday; there were no lines. The Cathedral is not crowded as most tours do not go inside and stop at the main entrance; in addition, not many people pay for the ticket. The visit is actually relaxing and quiet; you will find mainly independent tourists.
Saint Vitus Cathedral has very impressive windows and roses. The two roses describe the life of Christ; there is an art nouveau colorful window depicting the saints of the Czech republic; this window was painted by Mucha. The music hall has beautiful décor, the side doors are beautiful, the golden portal is magnificent, the tomb of Saint Wenceslaus is really nice (the paintings, the door knobs, etc.), the tomb of Saint John Nepomuceno is an impressive baroque tomb made of silver, the roof is lovely, etc.
You have to read online on the sites inside the cathedral or have a good guide book. It is easy to understand. The cathedral was built over a period of almost 600 years and because of this, it is eclectic as it depicts many art styles in a single building (gothic, baroque, neoclassical, art nouveau). The Cathedral dominates Prague and you can see it from almost every place.
Once outside, walk around the cathedral and look for the rooster, the golden helmet, and Sigismund, the big bell located in the roof.

This is the building that you see from all around Prague when looking towards the Prague Castle. The cathedral itself is quite large and we had to walk around it to get to the entrance. The large square by the South Tower was really nice for taking photos and admiring the amazing carvings all around the church. The vaults and spires were really eye catching. I thought that the door by the tower was more interesting than the main entrance.
We didn't go inside the cathedral though because of lines to the tickets so we just enjoyed the view from the outside. I thought it was still worth the visit since the entry into the castle is free.

Although a later replica rather than authentic gothic architecture, this cathedral is beautiful all the same. Its imposing stance over the castle that surrounds it makes it dominate the Prague skyline, especially when it's lit up at night.
Inside is housed an impressive collection of art and sculptures that you can see as you take the tour around the chapels on the outside walls.
I found this cathedral far more stunning from the outside than in but that's my personal preference and I'd still highly recommend a ticket to go inside.
A must if you're in Prague for sure.

Does the cathedral south tower require a separate ticket from the castle complex admission? If so, where can I buy it?

Are most of the famous sites to visit very busy in June?
Written 3 February 2020
I’m thinking they will be busy in June because it’s the summer. I was there in the winter and there was a lot of people. I imagine the summer is busier. However, if you go to certain places in the morning there isn’t a lot of people yet.

Will there be a Mass on Wednesday August 21. What time? Is there a way of getting to the Church without climbing many stairs or climbing up a steep hill. We are in our 80s and don’t do stairs or steep hills very well.

Use tram No. 22 to Pohořelec and have an easy stroll down the hill. In 10 minutes you reach Hradčany square. Entrance and security check on the left side of the castle. Mass is held on weekdays at 07:00 (morning).

Buena suerte
