Neighbourhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighbourhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

- Kevin SPontypridd, United Kingdom6,243 contributionsChangeable opening timesThis is the church with the excellent external turrets, it dominates the old town square and its towers are visible from many parts of the city. It is a surprise therefore to find that the entrace is not actually on the Old Town Square but has some shops in front of it and access is up a narrow alley. The online information says open 10-4. A service was in progress at 11.00 and people were respectfully waiting for this to finish when we arrived at 11.45. Hundreds of people exited. About 25 people then entered the church to be met by a seemingly self ap-pointed altar man who drew a rope barrier across the aisle between the steel internal railings and pointed to a new stuck on sheet of paper saying OPEN 15.00-17.00 New times or just for the day, who knows? Anyway, the interior is very good with a huge main altar and two impressive altars either side. Along the aisles against pillars are more large altars ensuring that the interior is very good but doesn’t quite match the formidable external appearance.Visited December 2022Written 17 December 2022
- MaryannF650Clarksville, Tennessee1,491 contributionsMagnificent Gothic ChurchMy husband and I were visiting the Church of Our Lady before Tyn, also referred to Tyn Church or Church of Mother of God. Founded in the 14 th century, it is a Roman Catholic Parish Church. With two towers each topped by eight smaller spires in two layers of four, stone carvings, it has been the main church since the 14th century. The Gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn dominates the Old Town of Prague Czech Republic. Also located in the square is the Baroque Church of St. Nicholas. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit these amazing places. An incredible photo op.Visited November 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 4 January 2023
- Arthur MHamilton, Canada1,038 contributionsImpressive architecture with unbalanced towersThe church looks totally amazing. Its location at the Old Town Square clearly makes it a standout among the buildings around it. The towers look unbalanced with one tower slightly skinnier than the other. Apparently it represents Adam and Eve. Very interesting! The entrance to the church is pretty much hidden from the town square and is at a random alley by its side. Upon my visit, they were closed but it opens up at around 3 pm apparently. So that is something to consider before visiting.Visited December 2022Written 4 January 2023
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,777 contributionsSpectacular Gothic church overlooking Old Town Square! This huge Gothic church is situated adjacent to the Old Town Square, but is not directly accessible from the square (need to seek it out via some small alleyways. The church construction began in the 14th century and continued for many years. Most prominent are the churches twin towers soaring 80 meters and topped with multiple spires that give the appearance of a fairytale castle. Most of the interior was inaccessible when we visited, due to ongoing restoration/ maintenance, but we had a view from the back of the church.Visited November 2022Written 12 January 2023

- Brian KRenfrew, United Kingdom642 contributionsReopened at 3pmWent to visit this church and it was shut . However it reopened at 3 pm so we went back . The entrance is not that obvious but is down a side street and through the souvenir shop . Entrance is free but there are a lot of signs asking for donations to help pay for the renovation work that is going on . Quite a somber building actually . You do a circuit of the church and can admire the side chapels and the alter . You will be in and out in 10 minutes . Very historic and worth a visit .Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2023
- TravelerTrecker840 contributionsA Hussite churchThis is a very beautiful church located in the old town of Prague; it dominates the Jan Huss square. It has two towers that are unique, different, and they remind you the churches of a fairy tale. The church is gothic and the interior is Hussite; it is more sober when compared with other churches and because of the Hussite style is actually unique. The church is also very interesting because the main façade is behind some of the old market stores and the entrance is somewhat difficult to find. The church was built after the market and although centuries ago the plan was to demolish the stores, this was not possible adding to the unique features of this church. There is no entrance fee. It does not open on Mondays. Although the interior is somewhat dark, the light through the windows in a clear morning makes the church interior magical.Visited October 2022Written 26 January 2023
- Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia1,001 contributionsChurch with DetailsVery detail construction on this cathedral that's interesting to see up close. The amount of work that has gone into it is impressive. Opening hours depend on the day and season, but it's quite a sight to see when crossing from Old Town to Lesser Town.Visited April 2022Written 5 March 2023
- WorldTravellerSoonCanada364 contributionsStunning tall twin tower churchChurch of Our Lady locates that the Old Town square. It is a stunning building with 2 towers, It is also one of the tallest building in this area. I used it as a landmark when I navigate the city as I could see it from far away. From the Old Town Square, the church is surround by shorter buildings but you can still see the building. We didn't pay to go inside as we saw the interior of many churches.Visited October 2022Written 8 March 2023
- Maya C1 contributionBeautiful churchI visited this church with my class of 16 people, around the age of 20. We decided to visit this church because of it being a central and famous attraction in Praha. We only had one day, and a limited budget, therefore visiting the church seemed like a good idea as it is free to go inside. The church looked very nice from outside, it is built in Gothic style. The moment I stepped in, I was speechless by how beautiful it was, so much detail in the building, with ornaments covered in gold. I recommend you to spend at least 20 minutes at the church, or whilst you are waiting for the astronomical clock, which is located right beside, to strike. It is also a good place to go if you need to go to the toilet, only costs a few cents, and you get to see the old town square with many beautiful buildings at the same time.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 March 2023

A fascinating building located at the old town square. The architecture is amazing. When the church is lighted in the evening the view is magical.

My husband wanted to go inside entirely to see the grave of Tycho Brahe, the astronomer, but there are many other graves here and so much more to see. There were signs everywhere saying not to take photos, but people were taking them anyway. In any case, this is definitely worth seeing.

This beautiful church is free to enter, although they do request a small donation. The altar is stunning. It was tricky to find the entrance. Look for the archway between two awnings of the Italian restaurant in the building directly in front of the church. This archway will lead you to the church. We attended an evening concert here, too. It was a nice way to end a day of sightseeing.

If you're in the main town square, it's hard to miss this place. What can be hard to miss is the way to the front door. On the east side of the town square is some restaurants in the buildings in front of the church. You have to go through the archways down the center to get to the alley and the door. Once inside, it's very beautiful. So different than the two large churches across the river. It's much more simple and well lit and a great stop for free when in old town.

Beautiful church looking and guarding Starometske Namesti. Lovely and very quiet inside, worth to get in. Perhaps would have been better to have access straight from the main square but the entrance is from the lateral alley. Anyhow, beautiful.

lovely church inside, however, the Czech's have this funny habit of building houses in front of a church facade! You enter the church through an archway which has an Italian restaurant on the side.

This is a lovely, quiet church. I thought the entrance was a little difficult to find, as you have to go through a little alleyway. But it was worth the difficulty. The inside is very beautiful, although I think some of the other famous churches in Prague are more ornate

It’s front is hidden behind another building, but its spires let you know something special awaits within. It is somewhat elaborate, but tastefully so. Black and gold is everywhere and it works so well. The moment I walked in I was in love. I suggest you take a look at the photos online. There are some that gives you an excellent feel for the place. I found it elevating and redeeming and profoundly spiritual. This is another church where I could easily see myself attending services regardless of what denomination it is. There is a peacefulness here that is a precursor to contemplation. And as a pure tourist, I just enjoyed walking around, so much so that I kept doing so until they threw my wife and I out as their mid-day siesta started. I intended to return, but alas, we did not. ‘Tis a pity.
