Petrin Tower

Petrin Tower, Prague: Address, Phone Number, Petrin Tower Reviews: 4/5

About
The lookout tower was built for the General Land Centennial Exhibition in 1891 by the initiative of the founders of Czech Tourist Club: Dr. Vilem Kurz and architect Vratislav Pasovsky. Having been inspired by the Paris lookout tower designed by engineer Eiffel, Petrin Hill which is 318 m high was chosen for the structure. The construction began on March 16, 1891, according to the initial design of architect Vratislav Pasovsky further elaborated by engineers Frantisek Prasil and Julius Soucek from Czech and Moravia Machine Works (Ceskomoravska strojirna). The opening ceremony took place on August 20 of the same year. The foundations were laid 11 meters underground to hold the 63.5-metre tall steel construction that weighed 175 tons. An octagonal tube is the core of the structure with the lift surrounded by two spiral staircases with 299 stairs - one for each direction. The entire structure includes bracing elements in the shape of Saint Andrew's crosses. The tower has two lookout landings; the upper one is 55 metres high. The ground floor and basement are situated in a neo-Renaissance building. At the beginning of July 1938, the top of the tower was damaged by fire, probably caused by a short circuit in the lift cage. The observation tower was a TV transmission tower between 1953 and 1992. Today, it is only used as a lookout tower.

Prague's Eiffel Tower
Oct 2019
I always look forward to coming back. I look forward to taking the Funicular up the hill ( when functional ) and to the many choices one has getting back down.

As a local kid living in Prague years ago, it was fun to run up the 292 steps to the top. These days, my husband and I take the small elevator. It costs extra, ( added to the cost of the ticket ) and there is of course a line for the elevator. It is a relatively new addition. I am glad it is there.

You can get refreshments on the ground floor, especially welcomed after you have climbed the steps. They have really nice little pastries too. And ice cream . All ready for the tourists. When we were kids none of this tasty stuff was sold there, but we got treated to a visit to Bludiste - Mirror Hall.

The views from the top of the tower "Rozhledna" still take my breath away. The views down below have changed somewhat over the last 25 years. The roofs seem redder, Prague is cleaner, the surrounding gardens are manicured.
On a clear day, you can see forever ...

I come here every time I am in Prague.
For memories sake....

Note:
Steps leading below ground level take you to clean and supervised Restrooms (WC).Have small change ready. If you have kids with you, you will appreciate it:)

Terrible Staff
Sep 2020
The area and place are wonderful. You should visit the Petrin tower and go up to top to have the a 360 view of the city.
However, the staff was awful. I was buying the ticket to visit the tower, I had my credit card ready in my hand and I asked to the cashier if Credit card payment WAS accepted, when she reply “cash”? So, I kindly ask if credit card payment was not accepted and she answered “Yes, we accept credit card payment, but I am asking you credit card or payment BY CASH, HOW CAN I KNOW HOW YOU WANT TO PAY?” and she rolled her eyes… Sorry… I had the credit card in my hands and I even asked to pay with IT… And she did not know??? And she replied and behaved in such way in front of a customer???? Seriously?Unfortunately I had other similar experiences in Prague…. I cannot tolerate such behaviors… I am a customer, a tourist in this country and this is the treatment that I receive??? Pay more attention to your customers/tourists.

Best tower in Prague!
Aug 2020 • Couples
We went to all the towers in Prague and I can honestly say the petrin tower was the best, we paid a little bit extra for the elevator and it was totally worth it!! Would highly recommend.

Worth the climb.

Visited here with friends. Quite a way out, but worth the climb up the hill. (There is a bar half way 🍺) There are nice gardens on the way up and opportunities to get Ice cream on a nice day.

Also the views from the tower are beautiful

February 2020 visit
Feb 2020
I got to the ticket desk, and asked how much a ticket was and was sent downstairs. I am not sure why, as this is where the toilets were, and a few pictures of history. I saw a leaflet, and took back to the ticket desk, and tried to ask another couple of questions, they guy was so rude, and put me off going up. I believe there is one price for taking the stairs, and another price if you need to take the lift. I tried to ask how many stairs there was, but the guy was so unhelpful, and needs a lesson in customer service. There was a cafe.

What a view
Mar 2020 • Couples
After a day walking around towards the central area it was good to find some piece and quiet in the park.
Tower entry a reasonable 150k each, well worth it to see above the tree line.

Add this to your visit to Prague - it’s a must!
Feb 2020
We walked up to the view point rather than going on the cable car. It’s a do able average walk if you take your time & stop to breath, catch your breath & take in the views as you gain height. An achievement for the average fit person. The view point tower is an excellent photo opportunity of this romantic city. It is well staffed, friendly with souvenir gift shop & restaurant. There are vast amounts of gardens to walk around should you choose. I think this is a must when visiting Prague. It’s a mini Eiffel tower.

Hill top view
Feb 2020 • Friends
We got a bus halfway up then walked the steps to the top, when we arrived we didn’t know it was cash only however there is a cash machine. The day we visited it was really windy, the top of the tower felt like it was swaying and the walk up the steps was hard in the wind. The view is just as good from the hill top so not sure it was worth the climb for the panoramic view.
