The lookout tower was built for the General Land Centennial Exhibition in 1891 by the initiative of the founders of Czech Tourist Club: Dr. Vilem Kurz and architect Vratislav Pasovsky.

Having been inspired by the Paris lookout tower designed by engineer Eiffel, Petrin Hill which is 318 m high was chosen for the structure. The construction began on March 16, 1891, according to the initial design of architect Vratislav Pasovsky further elaborated by engineers Frantisek Prasil and Julius Soucek from Czech and Moravia Machine Works (Ceskomoravska strojirna).

The opening ceremony took place on August 20 of the same year. The foundations were laid 11 meters underground to hold the 63.5-metre tall steel construction that weighed 175 tons. An octagonal tube is the core of the structure with the lift surrounded by two spiral staircases with 299 stairs - one for each direction. The entire structure includes bracing elements in the shape of Saint Andrew's crosses. The tower has two lookout landings; the upper one is 55 metres high. The ground floor and basement are situated in a neo-Renaissance building.

At the beginning of July 1938, the top of the tower was damaged by fire, probably caused by a short circuit in the lift cage. The observation tower was a TV transmission tower between 1953 and 1992. Today, it is only used as a lookout tower.

It was a great walk around the area. I did not pay to go up the Tower but walking around it was a different experience. It is totally free to go there and would recommend there jus for the sights!

Great view! worth going up only up to the middle since the upper level has blurry windows which are difficult to see through.

Petrin Tower is a small Tour Eiffel. From its top you can have a wonderful view of the castle and of the city. Two platforms: one at the middle, one (smaller) at the top. By stairs or by lift.

We heard that this was the highest view point in Prague so didn't want to miss out. I am really not keen on heights, but after double checking, found out there was a lift taking us up and back down (more expensive) so was pleased I would be able to go up. The steps are on the outside of the... More

If you want to have a fantastic view of Prague, Petrin Tower provides that. But the tower is not geared to welcome all the tourists, or at least a certain maximum number of visitors should be allowed to enter the tower at a time. It was almost impossible to walk in the top of the tower because of far too... More

You will get fantastic views up here. Not for the faint hearted and unfit if you are going to ascend by the stairs. There is an elevator which costs extra. Not expensive experience

Lovely views over the city and a well organised tower - different staircases for going up and down so zero problems with traffic on the stairs

After travelling on the funicular, we went to see the view from the top of the tower, thankfully there is a small lift for those of us that are not so nimble as there are a lot of steps to climb so beware if you cannot climb, but the views are well worth a visit.

Went up the tower (299 steps), in the midst of snow and storm. Intended to be a replica of the Eiffeltower, but not near it in whatever way. But still, nice to do. Am sure if the weather would have been better, it would offer a nice view across Prague.
