Neighbourhood: Nove Mesto (New Town)
Nearly 700 hundred metres long, Wenceslas Square represents the most frequent and buzzing crossroads of the city. The National Museum in the upper part of the square watches over your spending spree in countless shops and retail stores lining the entire square, which ends at Na Příkopě, the most famous shopping street. When tired or broke, you can explore the city's underpasses, which can take you to the Old Town or to the courtyards of art nouveau houses with secret gems of greenery, white benches and rose bushes that provide unexpected peace in the midst of the city. Be sure to pay a visit to the traditional cafés, classic Czech pubs, cinemas and theatres. National Theatre near the river has a lot to offer to foreigners. Go to the river bank and enjoy live music and drinks while watching a sunset behind Prague Castle.

You can see the upside down horse and stop for a coffee here. It is just off Wenceslas Square.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- Brun066Florence, Italy13,412 contributionsOne of the most representative places in Prague.Given the location of our hotel in Prague, we crossed this "passage" daily during our stay. Obviously we were all initially struck by David Černý's sculpture, depicting Saint Wenceslas riding a horse turned upside down and hanging from the ceiling by its legs, clearly dead. And we wondered in how many European cities such an irreverent work would be accepted in a central and symbolic spot. Therefore the work made me appreciate the eccentric and non-conformist inclination of the Prague people. Subsequently, I began to appreciate the passage as a whole, for the lively cultural activity that takes place there, especially visible in the evening, when the public entering or leaving cinemas, theatres, bars and restaurants fills the arcade. And I also appreciated architectural features such as that of the "Rotunda" (where Černý's horse is located), an Art Deco masterpiece (which I personally love very much). After some further time, I deepened my knowledge, ascertaining that the Lucerna Palace - in which the Gallery is located - is all together a representative work of Art Deco architecture, which also has many masterpieces in Prague.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 November 2023

Tällaisia korttelin sisäisiä kauppakujia on Prahassa valtavien korttelien sisällä useitakin. Käytävät henkivät menneen maailman lumoa, rakennuksella ikää noin 100 vuotta. Jouluviikolla paikka kovin hiljainen. Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 January 2024

Classic building. Inside seems cozy lighting and the hanging piano / upside down hanging horse is interesting to take selfie. To go up one need to take the ticket. Located is by the side alley of W Square.

I missed the entrance to this place as it was little hard to find as there are few interconnecting passages but we got there in the end. We entered of Vodickova St.
The passage is made in the art deco style and is very nice. There's a lot of marble and stylish architectural detailing. It houses the upside down horse statue and has a paternosta elevator in it which I was going to ride but it was under renovation and not working. Its well worth a look if your in the Wenceslas square area. It was designed by the grandfather of one of the Czech presidents.

I got lost in this mess quite by accident. There are several such shopping alleys inside the block in Prague within huge blocks. The hallways breathe the magic of the past world, the building is about 100 years old. During Christmas week, the place is very quiet. In the large lobby, at least a movie theater, a cafe-restaurant and the world's "most daring" equestrian statue. Just brave the open doors and hallways on the street into the blocks, you never know what you'll find!

As you walk near the Vaclav square - you will find several cover gallerias and arcades - these are very nice when the weather is pour , so you can move around inside a warm dry place.
One of the most interesting - and very beautiful - arcades is the Lucerna arcade.
Decorations inside are very beautiful, inspired of the architecture of the late 19th early 20th century.
Also inside this arcade you shall find the upside down statue of King Vaclav riding a dead horse (this has also a very interesting story attached to it - check out the review to it, or look it up on the web , it is really interesting).
When we were visiting Prague , the weather was kind of cold - so we decided to take a walk through the arcade - plus I wanted to show my girlfriend the king on the dead horse , after we've seen the Vaclav monument in the square.
So when you are in the Vaclav square, remember this small detour - it is very interesting, with some very nice architectural features - and if you are visiting close to Christmas time, there will be also some seasonal decorations also.

It is as if the time stood still here for decades.
The pink marble inside was used in an abundance and still shows off beautifully. As does the magnificent stained glass dome ceiling. That in itself is worth the time it takes to walk in the arcade.
The statue of the upside down horse hanging from the ceiling is a relatively new addition...one attraction free of charge....
The works of the sculptor David Cerny are quite popular with the tourists, some report going on the 'hunt' through the city to locate them. The oversized crawling babies among them.
I always loved coming to this arcade and these days return for just a quick look when we are in the area.
In some way it is reassuring to still find some places in Prague just the way they used to be....

Lucerna - it's been there forever. The functioning movie theater is almost 100 years old. It's pink carved out marble entrance, the marble banister framing the steps. The marble embellishments on the windows. So much marble you are going to think you are in Italy.
The beautiful stained glass ceiling dome is amazing too.
Old grandeur - showing off what Prague used to be in the early years of the last century.
... and then there is the upside down horse, of course, of course . Modern day addition, I am not sure I get it, ( don't stand under it) but it certainly became a tourist attraction quickly.
The arcade is a good place to walk around and check out the small shops or take a break in the cafe.
See the upside down horse. It's free. Take a picture - everybody does:)
Have a pleasant visit!

Epitome of faded grandeur. Old fashioned charm. Lots of marble. Old style cafe. Beautiful Art nouveau leaded glass ceiling. Stores. Old Cinema.
And upside down horse.
The Lucerna passage is a welcomed retreat from the tourist filled Wenceslaus Square.
A trip back to the old Prague in the early years of the twentieth century.

Designed by the grandfather of the first President of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, the Lantern (so named because the designer's wife thought it looked like one) is not to be missed. The arcade, Kino (cinema) and coffee shop are not to be missed.

I am always amazed how little Lucerna has changed. Except for the addition of the horse of course.
The shops could use an upgrade. But the cafe and the cinema - Kino Lucerna - make it worth coming back. The domed ceiling is so beautiful and now the horse is hanging in there. I still can't get used to it, but it surely brings in tourist traffic.
There are many passageways in Prague, but Lucerna has most of the charm and grandeur.

It's generally taken to be a parody of the statue in Wenceslas Square. But I guess other interpretations are possible.
