A gem in the town centre
Dec 2019
A landmark in the old town. One of many churches. We had a look inside, but could not visit the ossuary, as it was not open that day. I would have loved to visit this for a longer time period.

Elegant White Simplicity--Contrasted With Magnificently Carved Dark Choir Stalls and Pews
Sep 2019
Originally Romanesque, the church was later replaced by a Gothic church. My spouse and I learned that it was founded for German inhabitants. It's bell tower (308 feet high) is a dominant feature of Brno.

The white interior is elegant in its simplicity, and features three naves with their majestic pillars that soar upward, climaxing in a net vault ceiling. Within these pillars is the white marble main altar, its focal point being a relief of the crucifixion.

Standing in stark contrast to the whiteness are the magnificently carved dark wood choir stalls, and the dark pews. The sides of the pews are also intricately carved works of art. Of note also is the exquisite pulpit, and the organ pipes.

While not a colorful church, it is nevertheless stunning!

Beautiful high altar piece and a joke sculpture
Oct 2019
The Church of St. James. The exterior of the church is very much High Gothic, but the interior seems to be a mix of Gothic and Baroque, though mostly the former. Most of the interior is painted white and purely from an aesthetics point of view, not all that interesting. The only standout art in the building is the high altar piece which is in the form of a Gothic style tower which sculptures of Christ on the Cross and Saint James.

I did find an amusing sculpture on the exterior of the church though. It's a sculpture of a man is baring his naked backside in the direction of Saint Peter and Paul's Cathedral. Im told it's a joke by the masons in competition with the cathedral. It can be found high up above one of the windows on the south east side of the church.

A must visit
May 2019
While Brno has many places to see, this should be high on your list. The architecture is spectacular. We were fortunate to be asked if we wanted to see the the upper part of the tower. From that vantage, the views of Brno are great. But to see the large timbers and bells, it makes you wonder how they got there. The circular staircase you take is worth the trip on its own.

Ringing the Bells was Great
Dec 2018 • Friends
The tour guide seemed a little eccentric, but passionate about the church. We didnt understand a word of what he said (we had translators), but we could see how much he enjoyed his work.
We were able to ring the bells, the ladies the smaller bell (which is quite big) and the gentlemen the big bell, it was such a nice thing to do, even for the Czech people we were with.
If you can climb the stairs it is well worth the effort

We had a lovely guide take us up to the tower and explain about the church's history and Czech Republic. It was a beautiful church that has withstood hundreds of years. To be able to view the huge organ and bell was great.

Pretty baroque church

We actually came to find the rude statue rumoured to have been positioned by a disgruntled stone mason - we couldn't find it but it is a pretty church nonetheless!

This Gothic church is beautiful from every each angle
Jul 2018 • Friends
Located in the heart of the historic centre Saint James` church is a three-nave church situated in James' square. The famous defender of the Brno city (Louise Raduit de Souches) is burried inside. This church is pleasing eyes from every each angleboth inside and outside. I am sure you will like this place too for Saint James is the patron of travellers.
