- Cameron L7 contributionsOne of the bestAmazing, incredibly atmospheric, and almost shed a tear. The most immersive experience I’ve ever had in a museum, in my entire life. It felt like I was, truly, walking through time. Extremely detailed in a multitude of languages. Being a history buff myself I rather quite enjoyed it. No issues what so ever, staff was friendly and helpful. I would go again if I didn’t have so little time in the city. Perfect museum well worth the small price. - Ruby DuffUnited Kingdom14 contributionsMake sure you take time to visit this museumUnfortunately, we didn't give ourselves enough time to see everything in this museum but, what we did see was so interesting. We went on a Tuesday, which is free to enter & only had to pay (about £1 each) for the audio information which was a must. Before you go in you have to hand your coats/jackets into the cloakroom (free of charge), This actually made it more comfortable to walk about. The museum has so much information to give people and I really liked the way it was set out. The displays & information boards were so interesting to see and read.Visited February 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023

We used the audio head phones that operated perfectly. It take a long time I did about 3 hours. And had to speed through the last 30 minutes as was shattered.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 October 2023

Up there with Auscwiecz. Powerful, factual evidence based, objective account of the lead up to why horrors can be imposed on others. It could not happen again they said. It is and within the lifetime of those who suffered it last time. It is frightening how the same arguments occur now by people and to people who said it should never happen again.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 21 October 2023

Free coat and bag check - bring a 2z coin or ask a staff member for assistance. All displays in english are difficult to read if you are just slighty visional challenged. Dim lighting throughout.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023

- McCarthybird11 contributionsFantastic WW2 museumWe planned a couple of hours here before going home. It’s a huge building - mostly underground with many rooms. We went in a Tuesday- it was free, we can thoroughly recommend the audio tour which cost £2.50 each and was really good- we would have missed a lot without it. I can’t really put into words how moving the whole exhibition was, but I have to say I’m so glad we went, Gdansk has such a place in history , it is so much more than the Christmas markets.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 November 2023
- sunnybrae2016Aberdeen, United Kingdom38 contributionsBest Museum in GdanskThis is an amazing museum. I learned so much here. Displays are annotated in Polish and English but it is also worth paying a little for the audio guide. The detail in this museum is phenomenal. We spent 4 hours here - we rushed through the last third as we were physically and emotionally spent. It is definitely worth two days and would probably take three visits to pay it justice. It is very well done and so informative. I read that there are plans to change it - please don't. The wider perspective it what's makes it so good. I'd recommend following this list up with a visit to the Solidarity Museum as that rounds out the story following the war. The museum is easy to get to and is a very short walk from the waterfront at the Hilton Hotel.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023

This is a fantastic and sobering museum. Very spacious, well laid out and with clear explanations in Polish and English. You see photos, films, and actual relics. Really well staged and brought to life.
There’s a special wing for children.
It’s truly a must see attraction when in Gdańsk.
However, it’s a victim of its own success in that it gets very crowded in the morning, especially on rainy days. I waited about an hour to get a ticket (free) and then wait to be admitted. (They limit admittance to ensure the exhibits aren’t too crowded). Almost no chance of getting an audio guide (modest charge) then as they are all sold out. But the exhibit is well laid out and you can find your way with no audio guide or map. It got a bit less crowded at lunch time and by the time I left at 5 pm there were very few people. I’d therefore recommend on timing your visit for mid to late afternoon to avoid the crowds—especially if it’s raining and everyone decides to head to the museums.
I’m a history buff and it took me 5 hours to visit reading all the explanations and viewing the material on display thoroughly. And this was without listening to the audio guide.
I’d therefore recommend visiting after a good breakfast or lunch as I just saw a small cafe type place serving soups, salads, cakes and a pasta type meal of the day.
Don’t worry about having to leave the exhibits to use the toilets. They have thoughtfully provided toilets you can use at several points of the exhibition halls.
And please do also visit the Solidarity Museum, which is even more well done.

This is an excellent museum, perhaps it suffers in comparison with the ECS which we visited the day before and was probably the best museum I have ever visited. If you are in Gdansk, you should visit both for sure.
The modern building houses a range of facilities, we stuck to the permanent exhibition. It walks you through the events building up to WW2, the war itself, and its aftermath. Subject matter like this could always be accused of bias, but I felt it presented a balanced view of events - eg things like the section on other nationalist groups which took advantage of the war for ethnic cleansing, such as the Ustase in Croatia, the Ukranian nationalists and others was new to me and eye opening. The focus not surprisingly is the effect on Poland, which is fundamental to understanding WW2 anyway, but it covers events in Asia too.
There are around 20 sections to the exhibition and you could easily spend 3 hours going through it. We had to rush a bit towards the end because we had a plane to catch. As you might expect, there is some graphic material in there, especially in the bits about life in concentration camps etc. Parents will have to decide what their children should see, but this is the truth about how things were. One of the main impacts of the exhibition for me was how the war displaced and affected so many people in every part of the normal life we enjoy now, from food to work to entertainment.
The audio guide is well produced and informative, but was not seamless for me - it kept playing me the commentary for rooms adjacent to the one I was actually standing in. Eventually I lost the thread and probably missed out on bits of it. Certainly I wasn't guided through the exhibition in a way that felt I was being walked through the story as Im sure the creators envisaged.
Those minor quibbles aside, this is an impressive museum. For 23PLN entrance its excellent value for money and a must visit. If you are time limited and can only choose one I would have to say it should be the ECS, but the curators here have put together a powerful exhibition that is a must see in Gdansk.

My wife and I spent 4.5 hours taking in the history of Poland in WW2, it was so interesting with very good interactive social media information and exhibitions. We were lucky as the museum was quiet which allowed us time and space to browse, read and take in everything on show. The audio guide was a great help allowing you time to look at your leisure and then pick up on something new in a different area/room when it was activated.
A definite visit when in Gdansk.

This was hands down one of the most comprehensive museums I've ever been to. We were there for hours and hours and still felt like we didn't get the chance to read or see everything. I'd recommend putting aside a minimum of 3 hours. When we first arrived it was quite busy but the museum was so big that the crowds soon broke up.

If you are into a well documented place to see the different aspects of WWII, this place is a must see museum in Gdansk. There are lots of details, and lots of information. For us 2 hours and half was definitely not enough so it’s better to allocate around 3 or more hours for seeing the whole museum with the details explained in the audio guide. The museum ticket is for free, and the audio guide costs 7 PLN. Even without the guide you will get all the information written in each section and that could be enough. There are some show rooms playing videos from the war time and there might be some unpleasant scenes so if you are very sensitive, better avoid watching these screens.
The building is modern and the exhibition is well categorized chronologically and also by the countries involved in the war. There was also a temporary exhibition that was also very interesting.
The main exhibition is in floor -3, so the floors up have nothing to do with the exhibition and you can find restaurants and cafes in there.

More than one person had told me this was a must-visit as this was, at least in Poland, the best WWII museum. I can now say I completely agree. It's also, perhaps, one of the best museums I've ever been.
I was especially impressed that it didn't focus solely on World War in Poland but it took us through all the stages leading to the war across the entire world and the many locations where took place.
Unfortuntely we didn't have time to take the audioguides and had to rush our visit in 1h30min but I would recommend at least 3h to properly explore all the museum has to offer.

We spent 1,5-2 hours visiting the museum. Since our time was limited we had to proceed fast, but we still got to see a lot of the exhibitions. We recommend the audio-system in English, and that worked very well because the system detect where you are through Bluetooth-detectors so that the audio system are talking to you about the room you are actually standing in. Worked very well.

The main exhibition is super interesting, very in depth and accessible to everyone regardless of their knowledge about WW2. Personally I really enjoyed the audio guide, it was easy to understand and we didn't have any issues. It's a lengthy exhibition though - between following the audio guide, reading and analysing the rooms and watch some of the video docs it took us over 3 hours to complete the visit so go with time!

The museum is very interesting and well worth your time when visiting Gdansk. I would recommend setting aside at least 3 hours for the visit, and also to bring good walking shoes. The museum is huge! They have collected EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING. They have sections dedicated to everything from the buildup and the years between the wars, the philosophies, the propaganda, everyday life for ordinary people, weapons, train carts, tanks, part of a plane. I literally can't think of anything that could be missing from this exhibit.
There are interactive displays and animations, screening rooms, VR experiences.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit but in hindsight should have worn better suited shoes for walking the enormous complex. I think we missed out on a lot of stuff, and we spent 3,5 hours there.

Truly outstanding Museum. I was shocked by how big it was inside. The layout was perfect and told the tragic story of WW2 in an amazingly interactive, but focused way. Some of the exhibits were graphic and may not be suitable for small children, but there is ample seating in the hallway that runs down the center. In addition to the museum and requisite gift shop, there is a VR exhibit and a fascinating series of sculptures. Highly recommended, but plan for the better part of a day if you are at all interested in WW2.
