About
Muzeum Slaskie comprises a building complex erected at the site of the former mine and represents a perfect combination of the region’s identity with state-of-the-art architectural solutions. Such result was achieved thanks to the maximum use of underground space, and therefore relatively low interference with the local, post-industrial landscape. Impressive spaces are vast and modern and at the same time maintain the memory of place, which closely corresponds with the Museum’s cultural policy. The new building of Muzeum Slaskie, raised as a result of the local inhabitants’ needs and some brave decisions, has quickly and naturally become the crucial cultural centre of the region, a remarkably important Silesian social life hub and a significant contributor on the cultural map of Poland. The new building allowed us to display valuable exhibits, which we were unable to present to the visitors earlier, and create the “The Light of History. Upper Silesia over the Ages.” exhibition — an innovative event, which is both important for the region and emotional. However, opening new exhibitions in just one of the goals fulfilled by the Silesian Museum. It is people who matter most to us and that is why we are proud to have established a dynamic and thriving meeting place.

Insecurity security, worse than an airport, rude and unnecessary. Xray and harassment. The illusion of security. Bossy guards with arbitrary rules, the false authority that comes from knowing their job is unnecessary. They were obsessed that I put my wet umbrella in my bag instead of my pocket.
The exhibits are overengineered and narrow, cramming in a nobilized local history with a disquieting ideological pride if you make it out. The modern exhibits are spacious and interesting.

My family and I have enjoyed exploring the Silesian museum. It is big and located underground on a former mining site in Katowice, Poland. The way the exhibits were presented made the museum very interesting. Absolutely the top attraction in Katowice. Highly recommended.

The museum is interesting, well planned, well thought of. Definitely it was a time well spent. The buildings and interiors of the museum are very modern and interesting. The exhibition about Silesia is very informative and interesting, even for my teenage daughter. The galleries have some great pieces of art.

The exhibition about Selesia is awesome! I really enjoyed the very modern concept and every single information displayed, You can really forget the time.
The other exhibitions are also really nice.

Cannot recommend this too highly.
Very reasonable entrance fee, penty to see and do, something to appeal to everyone.
The buildings are magnificent and the attention to detail is amazing. Beautifully designed and laid out. Clean and well-signed.Good refreshments. Long queue to go up the tower so we didn't bother, but would have been a great view I'm sure.

Nice museum, there is a lot of exhibition available. MY favorite one was about Silesia. I like paints and exhibition Mumia and Glusza. I don`t like modern art. I hate covid exhibition. Sorry but for me its not a art. Overall nice way to spend raining day.

Did not expect to find such a wonderful museum in Katowice. It is located at the grounds of a former mine just 2 km Northeast of Katowice main railwaystation. From the schacht tower there is a nice view over the city. The museum proper has different sections of which the history part in the basement is probably the most interesting as it is interactive to some extent and rather instructive about Silesia's recent and past history. Once Silesia was an industrial power house (coal and steel) for Prussia and Germany and after the Second World war for Poland. Interesting to see that even 'wise' leaders like Bismarck were unable to Germanize the area. One can not impose another culture. Hitler tried a more drastic approach by forcing Polish and Jewish people out with violence. Also unsuccessful.
The museum also has an interesting modern art section. 'Heads on fire' is one of the (master) pieces. Rather appropriate considering all the burning coal transforming iron ore into steel and the hustle and bustle of the history department. Hope they improve the noise and sound management.
Overall a great experience. I went there twice.

Just come. It's really awesome. One day on a week it's totally free. The museum is very well organized, staff is friendly and well informed. It's fun and wandering inside doesn't feel like a chore. You can learn a lot about area and enjoy yourself at the same time.

I loved the modern art especially and the view from the top of the observation deck. Tuesday is free entry.

When in Katowice do not miss this diamond pressed out of a former coal mine. Upper Silesia is one of the most historically interesting parts of Poland, and this museum does a fine treatment to its significance. The brooding permanent collection is excellent, often leaning industrial oand somber in direction. For the English speaker the historical section will be overwhelming, but I think it’s important to get a feel for the period and move on, not getting bogged down in the minutiae of local history. There is a contemporary section which was quite provocative for conservative Poland. The coffee shops (yes there are two) are beautiful nooks, the older buildings on the campus’ surface have been remodeled or are in progress and are fascinating unto themselves. There is a mine elevator tower (szyb in Polish) which lends a sweeping view of the center of the city. All in all, I am deeply impressed with this museum. My only reservation would be the museum can at times be too pro-Polish but I suspect this is a lingering fear of Silesian regionalism coming from Warsaw. Silesia has its own distinct language and culture which is not adequately represented in the museum’s curation.

Individual tickets are 27 PLN each and group tickets are 21 PLN. There is one exception: Tuesdays are always free admission. muzeumslaskie.pl/en/
