We incredibly moved and learned a lot about the events that took place here. Something we should never forget and never stop learning about. Deeply moving.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 March 2023
- Sand MPerth, United Kingdom751 contributionsHidden in plain sightWe fell upon this square by mistake. We never knew of it’s existence. There no mention anywhere of this in any brochure. The square has little chairs in memory of the children and large chairs in memory of the adults who lost their lives in the holocaust. It’s a brilliant piece of art and the best part is that it doesn’t cost a penny. It’s in the Jewish quarter near the ghetto so go have a lookVisited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2023
- Geoff LWest Wickham, United Kingdom17 contributionsA real eye openerHave done free walking tours in Rome and Bucharest and all been very good: this was no exception. Went with Walkative -yellow umbrella group through freewalkingtours.com. The start time and place was correct and punctual. Our guide (my apologies for not remembering his name) was an ex history student, around late thirties with a pony tail. He was excellent. The information he provided on the tour of the Jewish quarter and ghetto was very informative and interesting. You could tell he was passionate about his subject and his country. Through his knowledge of Krakow during occupied times and the knowledge of our Auschwitz guide we began to understand what the Jewish and Polish community had to endure during the Nazi occupation. We found out a lot about Schindler, who is more of a figurehead for what he did rather than a hero, and also about other Polish people who also helped Jews escape but were never recognised for what they did. We feel that maybe the Krakow local government should pay more homage to them in more openly visible ways. This is definitely a worthwhile tour and thank our guide for an extremely interesting 2 -3 hr tour.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2023
- Redkitewatcher64Andover, United Kingdom1,841 contributionsGo with a guide to learn the story of the chairsWe were taken to the square as part of a walking tour of Krakow Jewish quarter with CityWalks . I recommend visiting here with a guide so that you hear the story of why these chairs form the memorial to the people moved out of the ghetto. We met so many people that had visited on their own and did not know the story. It is very moving when you know their history, and the fact they are an every day reminder for people visiting Krakow. Also very close to the Eagle pharmacy so you can learn the story of their involvement in the ghetto story too.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 December 2023

The Ghetto Heroes Square is without a shadow of a doubt the most powerful and poignant memorial to the plight of the Jewish population of Krakow during the German Army occupation of city.
Located in Podgorze, it was from this square that upto 70.000 people of the Jewish faith were herded into and ultimately deported to various concentration camps from which the majority perished ,the horrors that were committed on this square are unimaginable, if you watch the film Schindlers List you get an insight into the treatment handed out to the poor Jewish population by the occupying army ,the chairs that occupy the square are really poignant and signify the method of selection to the various concentration camps ,if you're in the Podgorze district its a must go destination.

We had a tour guide to explain the meaning of the chairs and point out some of the significant surrounding buildings. Very interesting, and also very heartbreaking. Highly recommend it.

This is an interesting place to visit to see the square. The layout of the sculptures is thought provoking. There is not a lot of information provided in a English at the site. Need to merge this visit with other activities in the same area to get value out of the location. For example also visit the ghetto wall.

The history of the ghetto is incredibly tragic. On the square, there are a few boards telling the story of a group of Jews who resisted nazi oppression in the ghetto. The place is also marked with chairs. There was supposed to be a sort of commemorative building on the square, but the building remains empty to this day, unfortunately.

It is well worth visiting this square and very striking memorial, situated in the Jewish quarter just over the bridge. Several information boards provide information about the struggle of the Jews in Krakow during WWII.

Historically fascinating! A true testimony to those who stood up so that we can stay seated. Some who stand up never sit back down again, and those seats will be forever left empty but not forgotten.

This square is a thought-provoking memorial to those who were murdered in this area or taken from this area to be killed. In the heart of the WWII ghetto, you can easily take a moment here to contemplate the atrocities which happened. In one corner are some display boards telling the history of the local Jewish resistance movement: well worth reading.

I'm really sorry we walked there. Sorry not to be more help. The taxis are cheap and they don't rip you off. I suggest you get a map and walk as you see so many sights along the way.
