This statue is on the edge of the old town and pays tribute to those who died in the Warsaw Uprising. It's often swathed in a polish flag and has great meaning for Warsaw citizens. The Museum of the Warsaw Uprising has an area called the 'Little Insurgent' where you can park kids while visiting the exhibitions!

Warsaw is a city of monument and statues. Everywhere you venture, you will find a monument or statue paying homage to someone or something related to Polish history. Within the Old City walls, on Podwale Street, stands one of the most heart wrenching monuments in Warsaw. The Monument of the Little Insurgent. It stands only 1.5 meters tall but surrounded by the contrasting red walls it appears even smaller. It pays homage to all the young children who, during the Warsaw Uprising, served as orderlies, scouts, and medical assistants. Many fought with weapons and sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom. This sculpture by Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz displays a young boy with an oversized helmet on his head a submachine gun in his hands. This statue does not represent any one child by name. It collectively represents all children. Behind the statue stands a red brick wall with a memorial plaque inscribed with words from one of the best-known songs of the Warsaw Uprising, “Children of Warsaw, let us go into battle, for every stone we shall give our blood.” During my visit to this monument in April, the statue was wearing a blue and yellow scarf around his neck. Also blue, and yellow flower and small Ukrainian flags were place in front of the statue as a sign of solidary between the Polish people and their Ukrainian neighbors. As a volunteer in Poland assisting Ukrainian refugees, this tribute by Poland to the children of Ukraine is a remarkable gesture. Dealing with refugees daily, hearing the horrific stories, one can only imagine the conditions the children of the Ghetto faced. Children fought and died in the Getto, and children are fighting and dying in Ukraine for freedom. This statue will haunt you and you are left with the unanswered question, “Why?” You do not need to spend a long time at this statue as it will touch your soul. If this is the only statue you view in Warsaw, your time was well spent.

This is a small statue symbolizing a huge gesture.
Near the historic center, a few steps from the Castle Square has a huge symbolic connotation recent tragic past of Warsaw. @gargio76

For me, this statue is a very sad matter. War is always terrible, and it is even more terrible when children take up arms and go to fight. It is a sad place referring to a sad history.

We visited this monument on the Free Orange tour (just paid what we felt right at the end) but he described the story and what this little statue really meant. Worth seeing alongside a tour that explains what the people went through in WW2.

A statue honouring the aid children in the scouting movement and
others brought to fighters in the uprising against the nazis. I listened to a teacher who brought his class of grade 3s telling them about how kids like themselves were bringing ammunition, food and water to the adult fighters.

A solitary statue of a child dressed in over-sized combat boots and helmet, which serve as a tragic reminder of the price Poland paid for it's survival, and a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Poles

This is a monument to a child soldier, fighting in the 1944 Warsaw uprising. The monument is just s stone throw from the square, alongside the outer wall. Worth a visit as many children perished in the fighting

We understood from our passionate Walkative guide Andrei about the symbolism behind this statue. During the war this was a symbol of courage and inspired soldiers to continue their fight.

It is impossible to visit any part of this historic city without meeting the Second World War or more particularly the Uprising in some way. This small statue, tucked away near the old town is a poignant reminder of just how many people were affected and in many cases gave their lives in this terrible time. The story of this little boy deserves to be remembered.
