The Polish National Opera is the largest opera and ballet company in Poland. It venue, the Grand Theatre (Polish: Teatr Wielki) situated on the historic Theatre Square in central Warsaw, Poland. Offering each season a host of first-rate productions - many developed in co-production with international partners - the opera house contributes significantly to the richness of Poland's cultural life. The Teatr Wielki's building, erected in the first half of the 19th century according to a design by Italian architect Antonio Corazzi, was a haven for Polish culture and heritage at a time when the country was under foreign occupation from 1772 to 1918. The Teatr Wielki was turned into rubble as Warsaw succumbed to German forces at the onset of World War II. Rebuilt from ruins, the opera house reopened just over 50 years ago, in 1965. Being a thoroughly modern institution, it draws from the synergy of various ideas, goals, and aspirations.

For 17 years I have visited the National Theatre and Opera House every time I visit Warsaw.
I have witnessed many a splendid and memorable opera and ballet here.
I am 70 and
tonight was the first ever performance to bring tears to my eyes.
The dancers,orchestra,pianist and choreography held the audience in the palm of their hand.
Bravo.
I will keep coming to Warsaw for artistic stimulation!

The Polish National Opera is situated in the heart of the city, not too far from the old town. Once destroyed, but then rebuilt classic architecture building looks impressive. There are lot to see inside as well.

Just pass by the ticket office to get some last minute tickets. Most of the time there are very cheap tickets left. We paid about 40 zloty per ticket for La Traviata (Verdi). Unique experience, strolling during break between the Warsaw jetset and lower class.

We saw the opera William Tell by Rossini on a Wednesday night. Although the theatre says it doesn't have a dress policy; please dress up (no jeans or trainers) if you visit as you will feel left out if you do not. The theatre itself is very large and has a delicately decorated interior; arrive a little early to have a walk around the inside. The opera was in its original French with supertitles in Polish. Despite speaking neither of these languages well, I really enjoyed the opera; the performers (singers, musicians and ballet dancers) were all amazing. It is a shame the programme was only in Polish as it was really helpful to have a plot summary before watching the opera. Limited food and drink is available in the interval and is a little expensive, as with all theatres. Smartly dressed ladies were also handing out free small chocolates in the interval. This performance really whet my appetite for opera and I am keen to go again. With the conversion rate from GBP to PLZ it is incredibly cheap compared to what you might pay at the British Royal Opera House so take the chance and see the opera here when in Warsaw.

Tried to buy two tickets for December. Followed the instructions to buy on-line and paid with VISA.
The agency indicated by the Opera, Serwis24, did not pay to the Opera however and I lost the booking.
I called the Opera and after being left on hold many times finally called management. They told me there was a "dispute" with the agency and that I would have to pay directly in cash- the Opera doesn't seem to have heard of bank cards.
So I paid in Zlotis: the bank charges were almost as much as the tickets.
I have received no refund yet from the Serwis24 agency, so effectively I had to pay for the tickets three times.
Suggest you try and call them before you buy any tickets and be prepared to pay through the nose.

This institution is a complex that includes poland's national theater, opera and Ballet. They are playing very high level productions , and you don't have to be an opera expert to enjoy it . Because the famous grand performances that you will see, will impress you by the top level scenography , costumes , the large number of actors on stage , and the big live orchestra . Its the top level you can see only in Russia and Poland .
Don't think twice. Whatever they play that night will be excellent snd memorable . The tickets are subsidized by the stats and you can take advantage of the relatively very inexpensive tickets price.
You can have a dinner after or before the show, and whatever you decide, it will be a night to remember .

Was privileged to attend dinner and a short recital given by the Warsaw Chamber Opera Sinfonietta here. A beautiful building and a magical setting for a most entertaining evening.

Warsaw is a city of juxtaposition. It is part of what contributes to the unique "vibe" of this city. The horrors of it's dark history is visceral and exists alongside a vibrant present of art and music. The National Opera is one of many places to embrace and enjoy that invigorating present. The building though heavily damaged during the war is today a spectacular, beautiful building worth visiting for the architecture alone. With that said, the performances I have enjoyed there have been unsurpassed and this year's (2012) presentation of the Nutcracker was incredible. The audiences are always well-behaved, respectful and engaged.......and unlike at home nobody will be wearing a baseball cap. The prices are very reasonable but be sure to plan ahead as all of the performances I have ever attended have been sold out!

"Dama Kameliowa" (in polish) on stage in Warsaw. The combination of Chopin's very emotional music and American choreography was received by standing ovations.
The best, in my opinion, Acts 2 and 3, perfectly combined the intimacy of Chopin's music with beautiful dance and the dramatic story of unusual love. The orchestra and the pianist performed with great feeling. This is, after all, Chopin's homeland. We had a very pleasant evening at the Opera House in Warsaw ( one of the largest opera houses in the world, over 1800 seats. impressive scene).
All tickets were sold out, so plan your evening in advance.

Despite reading that the Teatr Wielki was the largest theatre in Europe I wasn't expecting it to top Covent Garden ROH, however, I was so wrong, everything, and I mean everything, about the building and performance, Don Quixote, was perfect. In fact the production was that good my husband, who always falls asleep at the ballet, didn't nod off once!.
Another fabulous point is the cost - we purchased the best seats in the house, drank brandy and champagne for a fraction of what ROH charge. How I wish this theatre was closer to home. I can't wait to go back and will be keeping my eyes peeled for their christmas line-up.
