The dragon appears on postcards, t-shirts, and every souvenir you can imagine. You almost HAVE to see the dragon bridge and pose for a quick picture. There's not much to it, other than another bridge crossing the main canal, with the presence of the dragons at the end, guarding the city.

Another iconic element of Ljubljana besides the statue of the famous poet Prešeren. Considered an extraordinary example of Art Nouveau architecture (Vienna Secession style - an association of Viennese artists during the Art Nouveau era), it was constructed between 1900 and 1901. At the time, it was the first reinforced concrete bridge and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It was also the first structure to be paved with asphalt in Slovenia.

The Dragon Bridge replaced an old 1819 oak bridge which was heavily damaged during the 1895 earthquake. The authorities decided to use reinforced concrete mainly for economic purposes as it was cheaper than the more common stonework of the days. In the early 1980s, the bridge was renovated with a lightweight concrete.

The original design included four winged lions instead of winged dragons with curling tails and was to be called the Jubilee Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Soon after its opening, the official name of the bridge was forgotten and it became known as the Dragon Bridge because of the four dragon statues located on its corners.

There are four large sheet-coppered dragons guarding the bridge, two at each end, with sixteen smaller ones decorating its span located, in pairs, under each parapet lamp. The original parapet lamps were once powered by gas but no more.

According to legend, Jason, the founder of Ljubljana, together with other Argonauts killed a dragon, and this dragon is now in one of the four statues of the bridge.

Legends says that when a virgin walks across the bridge, the dragons start wagging their tails. A dragon also appears in the crest of Ljubljana.

Free to see and very central, you can’t miss it if you are in Ljubljana.

A beautiful and ancient bridge.
Decorated with dragon statues.
There are many restaurants and cafes around.
The Old Town area is the most beautiful in the city and along with this special bridge, a great place to stroll and spend time.

Iconic monument in center of Ljubljana 🇸🇮. There is a legend that Jason was the founder of Ljubljana, and he and his Argonauts killed a dragon. This is one of the four dragon statues in the bridge. According to local legends, when a virgin crosses the bridge, the dragons will wag their tails. Some local people have nicknamed this structure "mother-in-law" because of its fiery nature. Close by you can find coffee places, markets, restaurants, as you are in the heart of the city.

First of all it's a bridge and one of many in Ljubljana, but the dragon sculptures are what make it interesting, and the bridge facade is worth a look. It was commissioned under the Austrio-Hungarian succession in 1895 after an earthquake damaged the previous wooden bridge, it was built of reinforced concrete (one of the first bridges to use), it was the third largest arch in Europe when built and it was the first bridge to be paved. But really the dragon sculptures and other bronze facade pieces are what make it. A must see in Ljubljana and free to check out.

Really enjoyed the dragon bridge and to be honest probably more than the triple bridge near town square.

Located just past the markets and easy to find and locate. 2 dragons on each side with there own unique design.

You only need like 5minutes to see the dragon bridge so make sure you add it to your itinerary in Ljubljana.

This is by far the best bridge in Ljubljana due to the beautiful dragon sculptures on each corner. There are also fantastic cast lighting columns ornately decorated with dragons along it's length. Beautiful.

The so-called “dragon bridge” is definitely one of the most renowned symbols of the city. This bridge across the river in Ljubljana’s downtown has four dragon statues that are each one or two metres high, one statue at each of its four corners. The statues are very impressive, and we should very importantly not forget to get on the bridge to cross the river, and hence see other small interesting statues.

Ljubljana’s iconic Dragon Bridge opened for traffic in 1901 and was completed in 1907. It was one of the first bridges constructed using reinforced concrete. It’s designed in the Vienna Successionist style and commemorates 40 years of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s rule; hence, Ljubljana received the funding. It’s only a few hundred meters from the pedestrian Triple Bridge.

The bridge was originally built when Slovenia was part of Austro-Hungary and named The Jubilee Bridge of the Emperor Franz Josef I. In July 1919, it was renamed Dragon Bridge in reference to the dragon sculptures on the bridge. Most prominent of these are the four dragon statues standing on pedestals at its four corners. Smaller dragon sculptures decorate the beautiful Art Nouveau balustrades.
