This is a must-see sight for architecture lovers. The grand gateway and buildings behind it are the work of the eccentric, intensely religious, somewhat solitary architect Joze Plecnik, the most famous architect of Slovenia. He was called here in 1936 to design a new section of the cemetery for ceremonies rather than interments. Each structure is a modernized version of a traditional building type. The variety and interpretations of older buildings will arouse the admiration of those who know about pre-modern architecture. Several structures can be entered, and visitors will see his imaginative lamps, altar furnishings, etc.
I know a good deal about traditional buildings, and a fair amount about Plecnik, but my companion is not a professional in the field. He admired the buildings anyway, and the ingenuity that went into their design. This visit may not be for every tourist, but for those who want to see a creative mind at work, it rates five stars.

The cemetery architecture was different and good. If you like the works of Joze Plecnik , then you would love this place.

Žale are same place of remembrance as year ago. Memory and memorials, flowes and candels are around the visitors on this biggest cemetery of Slovenia. Tourist stop at Plečnik's Žale, locals go on to the graves. Visit is free for all. You need a guide to show you the best sculptures and design. All graves with names are on the net.

A huge and very peaceful cemetery in the outskirts of Ljubljana with a few beautiful grave monuments, old headstones and small chapels. The most striking monument is the ornamental entrance gate by the great architect Plečnik. You can get here easily by bus from Ljubljana centre.

We walked here from the city centre which was a pleasant 40 minute stroll. The entrance gates and chapels are beautiful. There was a funeral taking place whilst we were there, which made the visit a little strange as usually cemeteries of interest (such as Highgate in London or Pere Lachaise in Paris) are no longer in use.
Most of the graves are well-tended, but it was a shame to see that no one seems to be overly concerned with the upkeep of the Italian military section which was rather overgrown.
Spent about an hour or so wandering around, but could easily spend much longer (especially if you were seeking out specific graves.)

With a bit more knowledge about Slovenian history and architecture it's a great place to spend few hours and admire Plečnik's architecture, walk among graves of more or less significant people whose graves are among common people graves.

Best known for its Plecnik architecture, it's the largest cemetery in Slovenia. It is well set out and, while most headstones are not as ornate as those in many other cemeteries I have visited, the setting among the trees make it very picturesque. It is an active cemetery and obviously well-visited by family and friends judging by the amount of flowers on the graves.
A small Jewish section, WWI & WWII graves, and other notables adds interest to the visit. Joggers can be seen running on the path through the cemetery.
We drove the short distance to the cemetery, however, a walk from the centre of town is possible.

Sightseeing of cemetary? Really??!! I would hardly believe that any one would like to do that. :)) But ... if name Plečnik sounds familiar to you and you are just in case an arhitect ... well I would understand. :))) Especially if you go to the entry point with a monumental columns and uniquely designed mortuaries behind. Rarely seen.

Cemeterys are morbid, but should you overcome your aversion you will be rewarded with beautiful architecture. This is Plečniks masterpiece. Stunning entrance and beautiful but strange chappels make this place worth a visit. It's even more beautiful at night.

Go as far to the northern side of the cemetery (Tomačevska street) and park on the left. Cross the road near the big bronze monument, dedicated to the victioms of war and in the shadow of it you can find Russian monument.
