Šmarna gora is a hill with great view near the central part of Ljubljana. We used the easiest path to the top. It starts near the bridge over the Sava River. First part of the path is little hidden between gardens. Later it is easy path, leading up near some chapels and later to the top with a church, local inn with fine food and many, many visitors. Fast climbers need 40 minutes, for others it is one hour of walking and at least additional one hour at the top.

This is an active hiking trail but suitable for many levels of fitness. We are in our 60's and had no trouble with the hike. We also saw many families with young children and even babies in backpacks. The main trail is well maintained and well marked, although one has only to follow the other hikers. The view at the top is excellent and the homemadesoup in the little cafe is delicious. Super easy to get out to the trail head - just visit the TI office in center city - they will tell you where to get on and off the bus and sell you a bus pass. This was a highlught of our stay in Ljubljana!

Very bautiful view and good tea. Good for children. Path isn't too hard for anyone and you can eat classic slovenian food in the restaurant on the top.

This is a real attraction with the locals, so it would be a shame if you would miss out. This is a big hill (or a small mountain) just outside Ljubljana that offers hikers and "normal" people to enjoy a stroll in the nature. If you're a hiker this literally will be a 20 min walk up the hill, but if you don't do this every day it can be a 45 min adventure. There is a nice church and a restaurant at the top that offers real and good Slovenian food, so don't hesitate if you want to take a break from a city life!

Smarna gira is a hill where almost every ljubljana’s citizen goes more or less regularly. You’ll meet people on every hour of the day and in every weather condition. With small children it takes you 1,5 hours up and less than an hour back, alone 45’ up and 30’ down if you start from Spodnje Pirnice - behind a bar/club. The terrain is light to moderate ascent, yet from time to time your heart is going to pump on full. At the top there is beside a really great view, a small church and a decent old-slovenian-style and rather cheap restaurant. One can lay down, sit down or visit a cute children playground.
Definitely worth a visit and absolutely a great day spent regardless of weather. And wherever you start, just ascend and youll reach the top - no way of getting lost.

Pleasant hike to the top. Depending on your condition, 30 minutes or 1h15 if you like to stop here and there to take a breath. With a bit of physical condition and good walking shoes, you will enjoy the climb. Restaurant, lots of places to sit down under the trees and relax and a spendid view around will await you. We started from the parking lot after the "Seven Culture Club" in Spodnje Pirnice where we easily and safely could leave the car (2€ a day). Indeed, must do if in LJ.

We can now consider ourselves like a local having completed the climb of Smarna Gora (elevation 669 metres). Without a car we caught a local bus from Ljubljana towards Gameljne getting off at Tacencki most. As it was a Sunday the #8 does not run we caught a #1B (or #1D). From Tacencki most bus stop it was easy to find the direction to the start of the path, we just had to follow the locals, there was a good stream of people. (Cross over the road from the bus stop, walk down Rocenska Ulica, turn right and weave passed houses.)
The path on Smarna Gora is well signed, follow the red and white bullseye symbol which is painted on tree trunks or if in doubt just followed the crowd. The climb is rough, mostly shaded and challenging at times, there are only a few sections where the incline is slight, after forty minutes we reached the summit hot and sweaty. On the summit there is a restaurant serving traditional Slovenian food and refreshments, as well as a medieval church and of course great views of the region. After hiking down we stopped into a local bar near the bus stop for a refreshing drink before catching our bus back into town. Highly recommend the bar and the hike, it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, a great Slovenian weekend activity.

A lot of locals come here daily and it's the perfect hike if you don't want to drive too far away from the city. It's an uphill trek, but worth it in the end. The views are beautiful and take a moment to snack on some little donuts and maybe some tea.

Ljubljana's most popular hill, and for a good reason! On a clear day the views from the top are incredible. You can get a nice coffee, craft beer or local tea at the top. It gets really busy at the weekend, but try and get up for sunrise and you will get some incredible views.
