About
The Old Vine, the oldest vine in the world, resides in Maribor right at the centre of the old town. The Old Vine, with an age that spans over 400 years, won its place into the Guinness World Records by being the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes; there is no room for doubt about this as experts have confirmed that it is indeed the oldest! From its clusters come the Žametovka, also known as Blaufränkisch, a variety of grape which masters annually squeeze for its precious juice. The Old Vine symbolizes the rich wine culture of Maribor and Slovenia, and finally the entire world. Today, descendants of this great vine are grown almost all over the world. A lot of symbolism Let the Old Vine tell you her story; this venerable lady speaks of wine, resilience, and life energy. Let yourself be inspired by its immense power, both symbolically and with the energy from the fruit of its sisters.

- Sharkie994Taunton, United Kingdom264 contributionsTry the orange wine!We were not expecting the oldest vine in the world to be growing on the side of a building, where anyone could touch it! Was interesting to have a look around the small museum and watch the videos, before having a wine tasting of three wines (range from €8.50pp to €17.50pp depending on the type of wine). We tried an orange wine, which I had not heard of before which was very nice. There's also a shop where you can buy various wines.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- Semaan D. MakaryLebanon1,213 contributionsNot bad at allIn the old city centre of Maribor, also called Lent, in front of the Old Vine House, grows over 450-year-old Žametovka or Modra kavčina vine variety. It is included in the Guinness Book of records as the oldest vine in the world, which still bears fruit annually. The Old Vine was planted by the end of the Middle Ages, when Maribor was sieged by the Turks. It survived despite the wrathful battles that raged around it, since it was once part of the city walls. Even the fires in the late Middle Ages could not destroy it, not even the vine louse, which caused most of the vineyards in Europe to wither, nor the ally bombing of the city. Today the Old Vine is the only plant with its own space in the Old Vine House.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 January 2024

- Marie5466Guanajuato Municipality, Mexico1,151 contributionsHow Many Events Has It Witnessed During Its Long Life?Quite something to be a wine store, cave, and museum with the oldest Noble grapevine, that still produces fruits in the world, right in front of your establishment. Great advertisement. The vine is protected by ironwork fencing and nice red poppies grace its base. It is obviously very well taken care of. Listed in the Guinness Records Book so it’s official. Trimmed neatly and expertly to follow along the lower edge of the second floor windows of the building, following its contour perfectly. The building looks quite naked during the winter when the vine has no leaves and has been trimmed way back. Imagine just how many skirmishes, fires, storms, markets, festivals, musicians, people passing by it has survived or witnessed!!! Since 1963, when the dam was built on the Drava river, serious problems arose for the Old Vine. As the level of the river began to rise to more than three meters, the long-standing balance of the root system became upset and the vine started to die slowly. Unprofessional care only exacerbated its condition. Fortunately, the old beauty was noticed by a group of experts from the Institute of Agriculture. These experts, led by Mag. Tone Zafošnik, concentrated all their powers in the revitalization of the vine. Thus by removing the dead parts and making a short cut, they restored its life. The Old Vine had survived again, though this time its end had come perilously close. Today, the vine even has its own vintner who takes care of it. The yearly harvest of around (75-120 pounds (35-55 kg) of grapes is made into wine and poured into 8.5 oz bottles designed by a famous artist Oskar Kogoj. The bottles are a valuable protocol gift – only a hundred are filled every year! It is customary to sing while drinking wine. Songs of love, pain, happiness and truth. Which is why the Old Vine also has its own anthem, and, as they say, you are not a true citizen of Maribor unless you know the Old Vine Anthem (for which I couldn't find a translation in English so I don't know what it says)...Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 June 2024

I simply love The Old Vine tree and The Old Vine House. I'm local and I still visit 2-3 times a year. The best way to visit is to do the wine degustation and listen to the wine stories to go along.

I was very disappointed in the staff behavior and knowledge of wine (I'm not an expert and I expected some kind of expertise). We had to pay for a tasting that didn't give us any insight and local wines, practices nor history and the staff behaved like everything we asked was a hassle. I regretted spending time and money there. I didn't learn or see anything that made us dropping by, worth. Very poor customer experience.

Slovenian wine is exceptional: definitely recommend a tasting here. Of course, I wanted to take some home and they offered packing materials for transport. Located along the river which makes for a lovely walk to reach Old Vine.

During our visit in Maribor we went around to all the popular wine tasting spots. We found this one to be the best. The exibition is great with just a small piece of history about the vine and the wine. The staff is superfriendly and more than willing to share their knowledge about both local history and wine.

This is the oldest grape vine in the world which survived centuries of mishandling, 2 world wars, etc. The entrance to the museum is free and here you can get a lot of information regarding vine tradition in this part of the world. The vine from this grapes is the protocollar vine of city of Maribor and the offsprings of this plant are very rare.

There is no ticket. Entrance to museum is free! I can't say that excursion is so interesting just information about different kinds of grapes and wine. But you can taste the most popular wines (and also buy it) in Maribor and the price of tasting is not more then 5-7 eur.

My husband and I went to Maribor specifically to see the oldest documented vine and it was lovely. Stara Trta was just as good and we left with several bottles of wine. :-)
