The area
Neighbourhood: District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

Walk around this area, you dont have to pay anything. Experience change of guard ceremony near Funicular. Your BudapestGo card wont work at Funicular, so pay extra. Worth a visit to Castle hill.

My friend and I flew into Budapest and joined an AmaWaterways tour group. We had a 2-night precruise package in Budapest. Budapest is wonderful, and we enjoyed 3 guided tours, one which included Castle Hill. Castle Hill is fascinating and well worth the time.

When you visit the Castle Rock try the Official Budapest bus - small electrical bus with 4 stops to all the great locations - Buda castle, Fisherman’s bastion, Buda tower and Castle gardens - dont’t stop in Buda tower - not much to see and a long wait for the buses

Castle Hill is densely packed with historic sites and opportunities for panoramic views. The Funicular is the easiest way to get to Buda, but the walk up the side of Castle Hill is the most scenic way as you walk through a park like setting with views of the Danube and the city of Pest below.

Panoramic views and nice walks in the castles. Sometime you could "see" the knights gossiping. Wander around the different levels of the area and take many many photos.

Castle Hill, in Buda, has panorama of the Danube and Pest. Explore Fishermen's Bastion, Matthias Church, Royal Palace, National Gallery, etc. Night view of Castle Hill, from Pest, is good.

Climbing the Castle Hill is pretty easy but you can also pay 5€ for the cable car (that's really expensive, trust me, it doesn't make sense to pay such a price for such an easy and fast climb).

At the the top, there are a few buildings, such as the President house.

You can have a great view of the Pest side. The Buda side is simpler, with residential buildings.

Ride the funicular up to Buda's Old Town and visit the museum that traces Buda's history from Roman times. We were based on this side of the river and it has many charms.

Great site to visit. We took the little blue train which drops you and picks you up at different sites. Plenty to see at each, we didn’t miss anything. The architecture is stunning.
