About
The Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum is a thrilling, unique and moving place. Visitors can learn about the WWII and the 1956 revolution as well as the Cold War in relation to this former TOP SECRET nuclear bunker. It had an important role during the war and it was classified until 2002 and opened as a museum in 2008. The place ensures a real time warp into the past. Mobiles are not working inside. Do not expect a regular museum. One hour long tour departs every hour in English. Guide books are available in several languages. Unforgettable experience underneath the Castle Hill. The entrance is only about 5 minutes walk from the famous Matthias-Church of Buda.

The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

Disappointed but overall average

Got confused with this as it said it was a nuclear bunker however this cannot be true as it would not survive a nuclear blast as it’s not buried deep enough. The hospital and setup is really cool and lots of waxed figures used to display what it would be like in the Second World War however this didn’t last very long, they did manage to get a full sized helicopter which was cool as this must have taken ages to place it in the exhibition through the narrow corridors.

If your tall say 6ft 3 then mind your head, I noticed this wasn’t in the safety speech so I decided to add it in there myself, the low points are not clearly marked so there are some blind spots which you need to be careful about.

The last part of the tour didn’t seem to fit and was very confusing as it was about the Hiroshima bomb, it seemed like they ran out of stuff to talk about and added this, personally they could have talked about the Second World War instead as Japan has got nothing to do with what happened in Hungary.

Overall rating was average and the price was quite expensive for what it is, around £15 per person.

No photos can be taken in the bunker either which was disappointing as well.

The tour was amazing. Our tour guide was very nice and friendly.
You could really feel like you went back in time. It is called Hospital in the Rock but it really was much more than that. We had the opportunity to find out so many interesting things and our guide ended the tour with a really powerful message. We loved every minute of it. There`s no need to be a doctor or interested in history in order to enjoy it. I highly recommend visiting this place. You won`t be disappointed.

Very intersting guided tour in a cold war historic site. Former hospital in the natural cave below the castle which actually has been in use under several crises!

One of the hidden secrets of Budapest!
Jun 2020
Actually only ceased to be a secret nuclear bunker to house hospital staff in 2002. The full story is in the chapter on secret monuments in my new travel book, "Escape to Budapest, Moving to Europe's Coolest City".

Great experience
Aug 2020
Friendly staff, great exhibits, very informative and extremely intriguing. My family and I had a great time visiting this museum and would recommend anyone coming to Budapest to put this on their list. It isn't one of the most well known museums but deserves every bit of recognition. The tour guide spoke in both English and Hungarian, and provided great insight into the history of the building.

5/5 all the way.
