Island is great for running and other sports or just for a nice walk. You can get some refreshments there and in the summer there is an open restaurant. Also you can borrow a bicycle for 2, 3 or more people to have a ride around the island which is fun. There is also a small ZOO.

If you have extra time it's a nice place to visit! You could see lovely parks around the island. Taste the fried rolling bread with cheese during your walk ;) It's a nice place for taking pictures for those who love nature!

Whenever we are in Hungary my husband runs every morning at the island, there is just something special about it. If going to run in the dark, bring a pepper spray with you, better safe than sorry. (we had no problems so far, but just in case)

I think the Island was going a lot of construction work so there wasn't much to do apart from walking. Nice walk along the island edge, good for exercise. There is a Danubius hotel on the Island where we managed to get a hot drink but we couldn't find anywhere else for food/drinks.

We walked here and thoroughly enjoyed it . Granted it was a bit bleak but what do you expect in the middle of winter. Definitely want to come back in the summer and see it in all its glory

Our hotel was directly opposite the island so we made the effort to walk down to the bridge, and go across, and walk the complete length of the island, and then crossing back over the other bridge then back to the hotel. All in all worth the 2 hour walk. Our visit was in winter, and whilst the small free... More

Margaret Island in Budapest is traffic-free and has a dedicated running track around the perimeter measuring 5k. What a community and amazing running experience. You'll need to get the metro to Nyugati Pályaudvar and walk 20 mins from there - across a bridge with amazing views and then to the island. Grab your trainers and get yourself there!

When we visited the Island there were loads of road/ground works the 'cycle' hire didn't tell us, but took our money all the same (not the fault of the Island itself, I grant you). I personally wouldn't make a special trip to go here - under whelmed.

Staying in Margaret Island

Neighbourhood Profile
Margaret Island
For Budapest, this island between the banks of the Danube represents a green oasis, especially during summer when its emerald spaces are much enjoyed by both locals and tourists. The gardens here are very picturesque; the flowers in full bloom give the landscape a variety of hues; the fountains add an air of freshness, making walks peaceful, joyful and romantic. A leisurely stroll will uncover a variety of sites, even the ruins of a medieval Franciscan church and convent are still visible.
