Neighbourhood: District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

Don’t go… because it’s shut, even though the museums own website gives no indication of that. Go to the House of Terror instead

Visited this museum recently and was disappointed to find the WW2 section closed and in the process of being dismantled. Apart from that, it was informative and well laid out.
However, I have subsequently discovered that it would seem that the whole museum may be being completely moved/closed... "... the move will take at least two to three years, and the new building – if it is newly built – can open its doors in ten years at the earliest."

Learned so much about the changes Of World War I and the end of many of the European Monarchies. Easy walk from the castle district on the Buda side.

It is not very large so doable and you will see and learn. I was amazed that some swords were out to see/touch.

A very well laıd out museum. An excellent exhibition about the 1956 uprising as well as the weapons through the ages - some scary looking armoury. It really made you think of the senseless actions down the years and the barbaric ways to keep people "in check"

Overall I thought it was a really good experience, the ticket price for two people was less than £10. The exhibitions were huge and so vast exploring the first and Second World War with much detail.
The location is at Buda Castle Hill.
Also they translated all the information into English as well.

You're not going to get the kind of museum you find at Quantico or Fort Benning. The price is 1500 Forint to get in ($5 US). There are a couple of FUG Armored Cars in the courtyard, and that is about it. Inside, lots of models and dioramas, and a staff that is about as motivated as a glacier. Long walk to get there, across the River Danube. Best to take a bus or taxi, if you can find one that will stop.

Enjoyed the very graphic exhibition of the 1956 uprising and young Hungarians’ futile bid for freedom. Although primarily in Hungarian, that didn’t detract much from the moving and poignant exhibition. Very privileged to do a private, booked tour of the armoury. Handling weapons through the ages - swords, bows, crossbows and rifles - and trying on prices of armour - was an experience for the senses - and emotions!

Visited yesterday 18/1/20 only to find everything locked up and no signage to say why. Tried the door intercom around the other side of the building only to be told the museum was closed until February.. Despite a plaque stating "open all year round". No English version to the website so couldn't find anything there either. Totally disappointed at a wasted journey, especially as we are on a short break.

It was interesting to see the horror people have suffered. I found going down to the basement in the very slow lift quite disturbing and what was been spoken about on the screen.
I am aware that we know about what happened in the past but seeing it makes it real. Them poor people who suffered in such awful ways.

Hi, I am not sure about whether the building has lifts between floors as I was able to use the very wide open stairs, the exhibition rooms themselves are very wide and I would think easy to negotiate with a walker,There are toilets at the entrance but there may be others in the building, I hope this helps and you have an interesting visit

I am trying to negotiate the website to find the English version. Is there one? I would like to book the armory tour and read more info in English. Even German, I could figure out if there wasn't an English "button" on the website. Thanks.

Armory tour cannot be booked. It can be bought only if you have the main ticket for general exhibition, also it works only on some certain days and hours. Many Hungarian sites don't have adequate English version as English is not their official language. Plus their native language differs from all European ones.
The armory exhibition can be only in Eng or Hungarian. They don't have the paper book guide to buy as well... so I would just recommend to visit the museum and then to read about the observed items.
