Imperative place to visit. Free entry. There is a cafe at this location. A wonderful view of the city. Little frequented by tourists. You have public transport to get there.

After taking the cable car up the mountain, you have to walk a little (the shortcut is very steep and you have to climb many different steps; it's easier on the street, but the supposed sidewalk is only for runners). Then you have to walk up the steps in the tower, but all your efforts are rewarded with a beautiful view of the whole of Budapest. Highly recommended - but only in good weather, of course!

to get here go to nugayti the main railway station and catch the 291 bus right outside ( near west end shopping centre ) takes 25 minutes by bus to end of the bus route as he turns around cant miss it
then pay 1300 florin from a very nice happy english speaking girl , just under £4 for a 15 minute or so peaceful and quiet chair lift ride to the top , amazing views on way down as you get closer to budapest , but at top climb couple hundred yards to elizabeth tower where few steps and free to get in and climb and see the views , you can see views half way up but climb dozen or so steps to the very top where you can see for miles all away round and the whole of budapest almost as hills get in way of some parts , the city centre is couple miles away but you do see an amazing view
so go on a clear day and not too windy as i can imagine must be cold and windy up there , but walks if you want to all around , toilets and drinks food available at top of chair lift

We decided to have a fun afternoon using 5 different modes of transport in a circular trip from central Budapest. We caught tram 61 from Moskva Ter up to the Cog Railway, then followed the Cog Railway to its terminus where it hooks up with the Children's Railway. You then get off at station "Janoshegy" and walk for about a kilometre, a gentle uphill trek to Elisabeth Tower for great views of Budapest and the Buda Hills before going back on yourself to the foot of the tower to catch the Libego chairlift back down the hill and finally bus 291 back into central Budapest.
Recommended if you have done the city to death, or just want a bit of tranquility for a couple of hours or so!

What others didn't mention yet is that, if you don't merely want a leisurely afternoon stroll but come prepared for an easy mountain hike, it is perfectly possible (and rewarding) to walk all the way from the city center. From the chain bridge, it's 9 km one way, 415 meters of altitude difference, so about 2 hours for fast hikers one way, maybe about three hours for slow hikers. I first crossed the castle hill and then ascended along Kutvolgy street through beautiful villas suburbs. The last part alongside the chairlift is moderately steep, but not at all difficult. Don't try it with sandals or high heels, but running shoes are fine, no need for hiking boots. Don't forget a city map, there are no signs "to Janos hegy" in the suburbs.
I returned a slightly longer way across Szechenyi hegy, Sas hegy, and Gellert hegy, coming down to the Elizabeth bridge. That way, you get to know very different quarters of Pest that tourist rarely visit. But of course the detour is optional. Walking back the same way as you came should be feasible in 1.5 to 2 hours, making a grand total 3.5 to 5 hours.

Spent about 5hours exploring this beautiful area. I fell in love with the beauty in the centre of Budapest however it was lovely to get out of the city for a few hours and enjoy the surrounding nature.
It's quite easy to get to Jonashegy, we first took Tram 4 (Tram 6 or M2 are also an option) to Szell Kalman ter then we boarded bus 21A to Normafa (Gyermekvasut) which means Children's Railway. This narrow-gauge forest train is run by children under the supervision of adult railway workers. It takes three stops (around 10-15minutes) from Normafa using this train to get to the base of Jonashegy.
The walk up to the tower takes around 20 minutes, it can be a bit steep at times so it might be a bit challenging for those with mobility issues but the paths are very clear and pleasant and it's definitely worth the effort in the end!
As one emerges from the woods and meets the road, there is the entrance for the Zugligeti Libego chairlift as well as a place to rest and grab a bite. We bought an ice-cream to refresh and cool off a bit then continued the last part of the journey to get to the Erzsebet lookout tower which is less than 10 minutes away up the hill. This tower is simply amazing and offers panoramic views of the whole city. In my opinion it's useless to visit Jonashegy just for the chairlift without going up to this tower first!
Back down the hill to the chairlift, only took us a 5-minute walk. The chairlift takes around 15minutes to cross a spectacular 1km ride. Transport back to the city centre is easily accessible as a bus stop is available just across the chairlift's endpoint :)

János Hill (János-hegy) is the highest point of Budapest. On top of János Hill stands the Erzsébet Lookout Tower, built in 1910, whence you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the city. Take the M2 or trams 4 or 6 to Szell Kalman Ter. From there catch bus 21A to Normalfa (the last stop) and when exiting the bus, walk straight ahead to the information boards. At the info boards, turn left and walk along a well formed track that passes a grassy picnic area and childrens play area (about 4 minutes). Continue following the track (marked by a blue circular arrow) on an easy bush walk parallel to an asphalt road for about 25 minutes until you reach the top of the chairlift (Libego). From there it is a short walk to the Erzsébet Tower - climb up free for the magnificent views. After that, catch the chairlift down the hill and then bus 102 back to Szell Kalman Ter.

There are multiple modes of transport to reach here, but the best is walking. While you keep climbing the hill, different elevations keep unearthing different views. It is a real pleasure to walk in the small forest leading to the top.
One can not compare the view from here. If you want to see Budapest in full glory, this is the place to be, and this is a place as "must visit". We went there twice - one during the day and other during the night when entire area was lit up in golden light.
There is no shortage of restaurants selling snacks or water. No shortage of seating places either, so it is equally enjoyable by young and old alike. Be there, enjoy the time.

So what it takes and does it worth honestly?
If summer, I recommend to take a local bus, go to a planned point and then go for a light hiking. If spring/autumn, then hiking, or take the LIBEGO (=cable car)! It takes fairly long to go up with the ski-slope-like 2 seater cable "cars"to get to the top. Once arrived to the top, you will still have a 5-10 minutes steep walk to the very top where the "Janos hegyi kilato" is.
If you have the time and the mood, you can also walk your legs off, so good fun this "attraction" is.
The hill and its forest is worth several hours if you do stay in Budapest for a week or so. I won't go deeper in this subject. The observation point is nice and looked after. You can also take some nice pictures and is a good reward after the long tour up to the hill:-)!

At first you should get to Széll Kálmán tér, which is a major transfer hub in Buda. There are several possibilities tram 4,6, 17, bus 5, 39 Metro line 2.
From there you should take bus nr 21 or 61 to the two end station of childrens railway.

The best way up to Janoshegy is to use the children's railway which is a must do experience in itself. You can catch the cog railway from the city centre to the children's railway. It is a fun way to get there and cheap. You will be able to walk to the cog railway from the city centre. Sorry I can't give more info but I was in an organised group. There is also a chair lift which we were going to catch back down but unfortunately it was closed for maintenance while we were there. Janoshegy has fantastic views and is free. Enjoy your trip!

Hi Fluffy, we're hoping to take the Children's train to Janos Hegy then descend on the chair lift, is the walk from the Janos Hegy station to the chairlift hard work? I keep seeing reviews that say not to attempt it as it's difficult. I have a group of friends not all of whom are mega fit and wondered if it's as bad as all that. We're going in a couple of weeks so would need to keep warm anyway :O) Thanks Liz
