Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's a great statue near Vajdahunyad Castle. The design makes it far more striking than many other statues in Budapest which are designed with beauty in mind, whereas this, has a completely different feel. No less beautiful in its own way, but no other statue made me uncomfortable haha

Love Budapest. My 3rd trip there and highly recommend. This was my first to this park where I came across a statue called Anonymus. At first I thought it was the Grim Reaper because the face is shrouded and dark and hard to see. But evidently it is a scribe from the 11th century and the statue was sculpted in 1907. I took several photos but my favorite is the close up of his face under his shroud. Attached.

This rather sinister statue is my favorite in the park. It is of the most widely quoted person in the world.
The real Anonymous lived in the 12th century and his true identity is fittingly unknown, but he is believed to have been a notary of Béla III of Hungary, who wrote the chronicle Gesta Hungarorum (Deeds of the Hungarians).

Arriving in Vajdahunyad Castle you can not, not see three beautiful statues. Especially Art aficionados could enjoy the sculptures of Winston Churchill and George Washington. Both, surprisingly, made it through the Cold War unscathed. But the most famous statue is the statue of a monk, sculpted in 1903 by Miklós Ligeti. Very little is known about this monk whose name is even unknown, so he is now referred to as Anonymus (Latin for anonymous). This mysterious monk lived in the twelfth century as the notary of King Béla III. He is credited as the writer of the first book of the Hungarians, the 'Gesta Hungarorum'. Touching the monk's stylus is supposed to bring good luck with your studies. It is amazing. You can feel its strength. Valuable visit.

The author of the first chronical of the Hungarians .. in the 12 century "Anonymous" wrote "Gesta Hungarorum" - the "Deeds of the Hungarians" , as translated from Latin.
Now this being said - in the courtyard of the Vajdahunyad Castle in the Varos Liget park in Budapest you can find this statue.
I will not get into a history lesson here and the link to the king Bela III of Hungary - bottom line is the statue is depicting the character with his hood on - and without a face, hence he is keeping his anonymity and since even the scholars can not agree upon his identity , it is better to keep it this way.
The statue is a landmark of the city and typically is always surrounded by tourists so you need to wait a bit to take some pics.
And the "writing tool" - nothing like in the 12th century, but more modern looking - in the hand of the statue is shining bright since it is supposed to bring good luck if you rub it.
Overall definitely worth stopping for a few pics.

You can find the statue of Anonymus just in front of the entrance to the Agricultural Museum in City Park. He's quite a creepy looking character slouched in a chair, hidden behind a hood. If it wasn't for the tour guide telling us the story behind him we would have just walked past. It is customary to touch the pen he is holding, to make yourself a better writer. So if you want to write even better reviews for tripadvisor get yourself to this statue.

i have visited twice and have always found this to be very interesting, more so about the art this gentleman is renowned for, and the fact that he did not want any recognition. In the end, after his absence, little did he know he was going to more famous that he would have ever imagined. It's a sad story but great he received the recognition he deserved. His statue is located Vajda Hunyad Castle just near Hero Square. It's free to enter and located outside the museum in the garden. Great Hungarian treasure and a must see when in Budapest.

Well worth a visit even if only for the photograph. It's said that if you touch the pen you'll never be stuck for words...glad my old Mother-in-Law was never here!

This statue is a masterpiece produced by a very creative person. It reminds me of the Monument to the Invisible Man in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Located on the grounds in the City Park around Vajdahunyad Castle. The statue has become a fixture and classic photo op for the tourist circles so go early or late in the day as the tour buses depart.
If you are in the area definitely worth a stop.

Hi, just because you seem to be interested in culture, please, allow me inform you that this statue is of the Hungarian Anonymus - not the Polish one. He was the notary of the Hungarian king, Béla III. See wikipedia
