The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

During a river cruise of Eastern Europe, our group visited Becsi Kapu Ter (Vienna Gate Square) Budapest, in the Buda Palace District. The square, located in Old Town , is dominated by the imposing enchanting building of the National Archives of Hungary. Also situated on the square is the Lutheran Church of Buda and the Vienna Gate. The main attraction is the beautiful yellow painted Carmelite church. A must see.

Bécsi Kapu Square is the place where the Vienna Gate (Bécsi kapu) stands. There is a quite nice church close to the gate. The original Vienna Gate (called Porta Sabbati) from the Middle Ages was replaced by a new one in 1723. In 1850 the gate was replaced again. And finally 1936 it was replaced by the one that is standing there now.

Bécsi kapu Square is home to the National Archive of Hungary, the Lutheran Church of Buda and the Vienna Gate.

Vienna Gate has its name from a road that led to the Gate during the Middle Ages. A Limestone Tablet placed on the Wall of the right-hand side of the Gate has a Latin Inscription engraved which translates as: “In Memory of the Christian Heroes who died for the Town of Buda in 1686”.
In front of the Vienna Gate is the Angel Statue sitting on a Limestone Pedestal which was inaugurated in September 1936.

Going downhill through the Vienna Gate Visitors can find the “Europa Grove”, which is one of Budapest's most hidden Parks.
It was opened on Budapest’s Centenary as a City in 1972 and its Trees were then planted by European City Leaders, each choosing a Tree that represented their Country but that could also tolerate the Hungarian Climate. There are many different types ranging from Turkish Hazel to Japanese Cherry which are well signposted.
The District Council renovated Europa Grove in 2017, making it a pleasant and recreational Park with Benches and shaded Trails.

Vienna Gate (Becsi Kapu) is one of historic attractions you can see upon Castle Hill. It seems that some form of gate has been at this location since the middle ages and that the present Vienna Gate is the oldest actively used in the city.

The Vienna Gate is informally known as the gate used to leave the old city in route to Vienna. The present gate was rebuilt in 1936 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the liberation of Buda. This event is described on a plague along the wall, just inside the gate.

A visit to the Vienna Gate takes just a few minutes. While not much of a priority compared to the likes of St. Matthias, Fisherman's Bastion and Buda Castle, it is an interesting thing to see if you are interested in historical landmarks.

The only existing old town-gate. A very good spot to start your walk in the Castle Hill area. This is the northern gate of the District; all four roads that run along the hill converge here.

In olden times Bécsi kapu tér served as a Saturday Market in the middle ages for non-Jewish merchants.

You can walk up to the top of the gate where you get a beautiful view of the Buda Hills and for a very unique and not often seen angle onto the parliament building.

While here you can also view the Church on Vienna Gate Square You'll find some charming houses around Vienna Gate too (No.-s 5-7). The most famous is the house at No. 7. It was built on the site of a medieval house.

The large building of the National Archives of Hungary towers over the northern end of the square.

Through the Bécsi Kapu (Vienna Gate) you arrive in Bécsi Kapu square, a small and not too significant place. There is the first stop in the Castle District the bus, No16A coming from and going to Széll Kálmán square, from the Dísz square, the last stop in Castle District, where the bus turns around. The first thing that will occur to you is the Memorial of Buda Castle Recovery, a not too charming monument. The opposite is a Lutheran church that I never had a chance to visit inside, and on the right-hand side is the imposing enchanting building of the National Archives of Hungary. Also on the right is the slender figure of the Kazinczy memorial Fountain. Despite some impressive building on the side, the statue and the fountain, Vienna Gate square somehow doesn't look attractive enough.

This small square is located just inside the Vienna Gate on Castle Hill. It is surrounded on its 3 sides by paved stone roads and some historic and very picturesque buildings including the National Archives of Hungary and the oldest Lutheran Church in Buda.

In the Middle Ages it was the site of Castle Hill's markets.

There are also some statues including that of an Angel and a Fountain dedicated to Kazinczy Ferenec an Hungarian author and poet.

This is located near the northern end of Castle Hill. The only things that stand out are the statue of an angel (?) next to the Vienna Gate. The Vienna Gate has some historical significance for people in Budapest, but neither the statue nor the Vienna Gate look anything special to an outsider. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of tourists in Castle Hill, this is it. This place is pretty deserted even in the middle of a busy day in Castle Hill.

We walked through this square on our way to Matthias Church and liked the nonchalant, laid back atmosphere all around. Beautiful gate and some great little shops.
