The Matthias Fountain is a composite sculpture of much beauty, located at the Western forecourt of the Buda Castle. Behind the composition, and serving as a huge frame, there are four Corinthian columns. The base of the Fountain is a number of irregular rocks. On top stands King Matthias, dressed to hunt and with a crossbow inhis right hand. At... More

Nice fountain although I don't see the numerous references to Trevi! It wasn't on when we were there but was still pretty. It's another thing that is in with a lot of attractions so you should swig through to see it. It must be stunning when the water is flowing.

It is easy to miss this nice hunting scene if you are not looking for it. There was no water flowing when we went to visit in April though.

A nice find without having to pay anything, Matthias Fountain is on Buda Castle and is a must to see. Many people find this fountain a nice place to relax in front of it and take photos.

Beautiful fountain in the back of Buda Castle that is a must see. The statues are amazing and there is no charge to enter this area.

This is a beautiful fountain that you cannot miss if your planning to go to Buda Castle . The fountain which sadly on our visit was not in operation still looks amazing with what looks like a hunting scene taking place . The figures look amazing especially the hounds that look lifelike, you can tell they were sculpured by a dog... More

This is a magnificent monument (not a fountain when we were there, too early in the year I guess). We had the place to ourselves to take pictures as we were there early but later on of course it was swarming with tourists. It deserves to be admired.

It's a beautiful fountain, steeped in a fascinating blend of history and mythology, and well worth a visit and up-close inspection. Sadly, there is no signage to explain, so take your guide book. It was also sad to see a beautiful fountain, a work of art, on a wonderful warm Spring day at the end of March...without water. :-(

While near the Budapest Castle Courtyard, be sure to stop at the Matthias Fountain. During our visit, we had the place to ourselves, which was fantastic.

Staying in District I / Buda

Neighbourhood Profile
District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.
