Some of the Cassandras here make this street sound as if you're taking your life into your hands if you visit. The danger here increases at night (or technically, early morning) when the bars close. Come during the daytime, though, and it's perfectly safe , and there are many normal businesses worth patronizing. I live here, and went to a pharmacy just yesterday, for example. There are kebab stores, sure, but I've never really seen those places as indicting a locale. There also are traditional Slovak restaurants, an Italian place, and a new Nepalese restaurant. It's true that there was a murder here a while back, and there have been a couple of recent shootings, but these seem to generally be alcohol-fueled. I might not come here at 4 a.m., but during the daylight hours, no worries.

Obchodna used to be the main shopping street of Bratislava, but during 90's with the rollout of shopping malls (Aupark, Avion, Polus etc.) outside the city center it lost the function and continually higher quality shops were replaced with cheap shops selling Chinese goods etc.
Since Obchodna belongs to protected area, renovation of buildings goes slowly.

Currently the area improves and sees return of representative shops, good cafes and restaurants, however from the point of view of a tourist there are much more interesting streets just nearby, especially the heart of the Old Town (area between Nam. SNP, Sturova St., embankment of the Danube and the New Bridge (Novy most).

We stayed in an apartment in Ulica 29 Augusta, so had to walk down this street each timne we went into the town centre. It is lined with shops and cafes all the way and is very handy for buying just about anything at non-tourist prices. We found a cafe selling a range of hot chocolate drinks (sorry I've forgotten the name) - unlike normal hot choolate these are very thick and come with cinnamon, coconut, almonds etc mixed in. Heaven on a cold day and only 2 euros each. A very good bakers, a branch of Coffee and Bagel story (I loved their egg bagel -the cream cheese in it was excellent), a nice little clothes market, a good glass shop, a 'McKebab' takeaway(!), two small supermarkets and much more. The no 13 tram to the main railway station goes up here, and the road seems to be closed to traffic other than trams and delivery vehicles. Recommended for everyday and practical shopping but not if you want big international stores.

Very sad example of could-be central shopping street that happened to be one of the most dangerous and dirtiest streets in Slovakia. Avoid at any cost. Shootings, stabbings, mafia conflicts among shopkeepers, a murder recently happened here. Stink, urine smell, vomit, rubbish everywhere. Drug addicts, street fights, drunk teenagers. This street is crime-infested.
Shops are mostly kebab and similar junk food trash. Very bad food on entire street. Bars are ripping off customers.

Plenty of retailers, small cafés and coffee shops found along this street, however, probably not one of the must see areas of Bratislava Old Town. Regularly, there are trams running through this area. The street is a five minute walk or so from Michael’s Gate and therefore not far at all from the main attractions throughout Old Town. Our accommodation happened to be along Obchodna Street.

Obchodna (ulica) Street is a long busy street that is just beyond the majority of the Old Town. You can find it by exiting through St. Michael's gates to the main intersection. It is the main street with the trolley line extending in the northeast direction.

It seems this street had a more illustrious past as a fashion shopping spot in Bratislava during bygone decades. Now it seems like a normal street with the expected mix of village shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. As such, there is not much to see that is unique, making this a difficult place to suggest for those with limited time in Bratislava.

If you are staying in Bratislava for a few days, you might want to check out Obchodna (ulica) Street and perhaps try one of the restaurants there. Otherwise, we'd suggest concentrating your time in the main area of the Old Town, seeing the attractions there first.

It used to be the main shopping street in Bratislava, however after the large shopping centres Aupark and Eurovea have been built, the shops have changed and a fashionable shopping street has turned into a place to get cheap clothes and drinks. Not saying it's bad of course, I guess the place is frequented more by students nowadays and they give it its very distinctive feel. Grab some typical Slovak dish in 1st Slovak Pub, have a drink at KGB or a coffee at Shtoor in Martinus bookshop.

If you visit Bratislava after covering Vienna, then you are welcoming yourself to old town Europe.
Especially, Obchodna is an interesting example.
It is a case of two extremes.
Slovakia is not as posh and polished as Vienna, Austria.
Likewise, for shopping in Obchodna, which is the city centre for roaming around, having food, some very good deals and smart bargains for a cheaper shopping experience.
Good stuff is available in the walkways and by lanes.
Only a smart shopper and explorer can extract that juice from this area.

It is also a walkable distance from the iconic St. Martin's churchand castle which is a must see.

And not too far is the UFO bridge.

So, overall, if you just have one day for Bratislava, which is good enough here, get down at Obchodna and walk down all the way till other nearby excursions.

Summary: Great place for a smart traveler !!!
