I loved this street and spent a lot of time walking up and down the approximately 1.5 km which is lined with cafes, bakeries, restaurants, little shops... At the east end of the street is the beautiful Church of St. Michael the Archangel. Walking west on Laisves Aleja leads to Kaunas Old Town. One evening there was an event called Kiemu Svente which is "The "Courtyard Festival," a traditional event aimed at nurturing friendship among the residents of Kaunas city and district.

Was quite taken with this pedestrianised avenue. Had a lively cosmopolitan feel and its very popular with the locals. Plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants line it along with shops. At one end is impressive church of St Michael the Archangel and there is a dancing fountain colourfully lit at night about half way along the latter section going towards this church.
The end approaching the old town route is a bit quieter no no less lovely to stroll along and you pass through a nicely landscaped main square containing a statue of Vytautas the Great and a substantial commemorative plaque to Romas Kalanta, a Lithuanian student who set fire to himself in the square as a protest to Soviet occupation in 1972.

Our Hotel was on Laisvės alėja, in fact, we paid extra for a room with a balcony facing this beautiful boulevard. It is just under one mile long (from one end to the other) and is lined with 577 trees, almost all of them Linden trees. The boulevard is wide and spacious, and no cars, delivery trucks, buses or taxis allowed. Only service and emergency vehicles are permitted. During the night, we would hear the "Streetsweeper" making his rounds.
Lots of cafes and restaurants line this street, and they seem to be always full. There are flower vendors, bookstores, banks and a few souvenir shops. Nothing tacky. Some noteworthy buildings and monuments stand on this boulevard. The Post Office looks a bit shabby on the outside, but it is well worth a visit.
Laisvės alėja was given this name in 1919, a year after Lithuania declared its short lived independence. The name was changed to "Stalino Prospektas" in 1946. Then, in 1961, it was able to return to Laisvės alėja. When we were there (6/30-7/7) it was full of pedestrians (even in the rain), strollers, dog walkers, mothers with baby carriages, and friends chatting. Lots and lots of benches for those who prefer to sit, and people watch.

I had an internship in Kaunas for 6 months and was lucky enough to live in Laisves Aleja for 3 of them. The street is for pedestrians only, except for some streets that cross the boulevard (three if I'm not wrong).
During winter you can find it full with snow, which turns the place into a special scenario. During spring you can watch all those hundreds of trees starting to reborn from April on. During summer all the restaurants place their tables and chairs outside and you can enjoy a nice lunch during a labor day, a beer with your friends during the evening or go partying during weekends.
During spring you can enjoy Kaunas' Street Music Festival, with all kinds of concerts performed by street musicians (even I applied for it). In the end of the winter there is a traditional costumes and handcraft fair that takes place all along the street (I don't recall the name of this event). From the middle of the summer on the street gets new life with all the Erasmus students coming for the second part of the year.
Take a walk from the Soboras church all the way to the end of Laisves Aleja entering the old town. You won't regret. It is really an amazing place to be!

Very beautiful cathedral in the Byzantian style is visible in the end of avenue. We haven't made many purchases, but have perfectly taken a walk and have drunk coffee with very tasty batch.

Not the most spectacular street I've ever been to, but definitely a great place to head for if you enjoy walks. At the time I was there, I wasn't met with any crowds, it was silent and nice.

Due to the repair, it was difficult to move on the boulevard. It is a pleasure to have everything beautiful and clean after the repair.

It is central pedestrian street in Kaunas. It is not very much like an Oxford street ,but there are still many shops ,restaurants and bars. Before huge shopping mall AKROPOLIS was built main street was more important for shopping and leisure. But now major flow is linked to Akropolis. It is a must to walk along this street if You are visiting Kaunas. It is windy there in winter, but it is pleasant place for cup of coffee or glass of bear when sitting in open roof cafés at high season.
