- mrskrunLarvik, Norway4,362 contributionsBeautiful church rich in historySt. Peter’s church is a must for all visitors in Riga. The church’s tower offer stunning 360° panoramic view of the city. There’s an option to buy ticket for the church only (€3) or church & tower (€9). We chose the latter. The church itself is simple and old and has a history dating back to 1209. Destroyed several times by fire, lightning and war. The church had undergone many reconstructions. What you see today appears to me like it wants to be a museum and church at the same time but they don’t know how to achieve this goal. It looks more like an unfinished museum with a church in the middle. But if you pay attention to the details, everything is there. The remnants of the old church, information and photos on the boards for all to read and beautiful church or basilica design. The tower is undeniably impressive and nothing beats that attraction in Riga. The elevator is located on the third floor of the church. It was very windy when we came, no wires nor steel enclosures to block the view. It was absolutely fantastic and an amazing experience. It’s worth the €9 entrance to see the tower & the church.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- Erin S13 contributionsRude staffIt is a beautiful church with brick pillars and wooden alters. The staff taking tickets inside the door were quite rude to visitors, even resorting to chasing after a patron for taking pictures. Her voice was incredibly loud! I felt sorry for the poor guy. Rude!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 June 2024
- Kyriakos TLarnaca, Cyprus79 contributionsMagestic viewLike many other european cities, Riga has a lovely church which provides an outstanding view from top. Access is really easy through elevator, but first purchase your ticket at the entrance. With 9 euros you can go up the tower and see exhibits within the church. I really felt calmness while observing a panoramic view of Daugawa river.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 August 2024
- mrstraveller1York, United Kingdom2,152 contributionsVisit for the Tower ViewsThe church is pretty non-descript inside, of rather plain and austere brick construct, but the €9 entry fee is worth it for the phenomenal tower views. And the good news is that apart from a few stairs at the bottom, an elevator does most of the leg work. The other good news is that there are no pesky rail guards or perspex shields to obscure your photos. The tower is a brilliant way of orientating yourself, as the whole city lays before your gaze. I returned to see the views by night as the tower opens late on weekends, but Riga looks more glorious by daylight in my view. Look out for the free classical concerts, usually around an hour long.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 September 2024

Impressive church. The view from the tower is breathtaking, but the church itself is also worth a visit. There are currently two small exhibitions, one on the Reformation in Eastern Europe and one about the Latvian song tradition, which I found quite interesting.
Some complain about the entrance fee for the church, but I find this justified as the maintenance of the building certainly does not come cheap.
Definitely a must if you visit Riga.

Wonderful history in this building, back to 1209 with several rebuilds due to lightning, fire, war with interruptions for plague etc. Initially RC, it is Lutheran denomination. You pay to enter and choose to access the tower, firstly up two flights of stairs, then up the elevator to the tower for a stunning panoramic view of the city. It wasn't busy when we visited, so no crowds and the lift didn't take the full 10 minutes to return.
Back down in them main part of the church they have information on the church and it's history. There are also toilets inside.
We returned at night for a classical music concert which was free seating and full. Very enjoyable.

Outside, the church is old and impressive and beautiful (in that old, historic kind of way). Inside, it wasn't particularly stunning, and in fact, we commented on the lack of stained-glass windows (as there were a few panels, but that was it; it seemed very...unfinished?).
The best part of St. Peter's Church is the tower, and the fantastic views of Riga that the observation deck offers. You do have to pay, and it was a bit more than we were expecting (I can't remember exactly how much), but we really enjoyed seeing Latvia's capital city from that vantage point.

It is not the cathedral of the city that takes the first place in my opinion - St Peter's Church is much more beautiful, imposing and above all it allows to take a lift to see the city in 360 degrees.
It is a Lutheran church dating from the early 13th century - where it was obviously Catholic. The façade is baroque and red brick, and the bell tower rises to 136 meters. We only go up about 71 meters for the visit.
The interior is rustic red brick - this gives a less worked but also less austere side.
The price of admission with elevator is 9 EUR for an adult - well worth the price to admire the views of the old town, the river, the national library etc.
Beautiful church!

9 euros per person is well overpriced for this experience.
View is good. Church is poor inside .
The Latvian Academy of Science offers elevated views for just 5 euros, and the Radisson Blu is free if you buy a drink.
Don't waste your money on this and go to one of the other options.

The views from the tower seemed nice but I decided not to pay €9 to enter the church and the tower because when we asked the staff at the ticket counter how many flights of stairs we needed to climb before reaching the lift that would take you up to the tower, she was nonchalant, shrugged her shoulders and said we should read the posters. Well, the information we needed was not on the posters. I could not be bothered to pay €9 and encourage this kind of attitude.

We're mostly going for the view. The building is in a good state of conservation both inside and outside. It’s nicer to contemplate from the outside after the real interest which in my opinion is not cheap is to be able to climb the three floors and take the elevator to admire the city of Riga which can be contemplated from all angles.
