The story behind this unique architecture tells of its Latvian owner who was denied membership in the powerful Great Guild; to show his displeasure, he built two cat sculptures on his roof with their backsides facing the Guild and their tails straight up to finish the insult.

I passed this house several times, because it's in the center of Old town and saw nothing unusual except a nice building. Then once I saw people taking pics of the roofs??? I looked up and saw those interesting decorations on two spire like roof tops. Then, I heard an interesting legend of a local, and that's it...nice house with... More

This is one of those places you just have to see. For Cat lovers it is of particular interest. Built early in the 20th century, there is a great legend behind it. The Cats with their tails up and pointed to the house of Great Guild do so for spite. Apparently the owner had a grudge against the guild and... More

I was wandering around Old Riga and was attracted by a cat on a roof. I liked the idea and two figurines did look interesting against the cloudy October sky that day. Later I found out that it was 'the' famous cat building.

The story behind the building is funny, but it's not much more than a building with two black cats on top.

Very nice building in the heart of Riga. The cats on the roof make it special. A place to visit when you are in the old town.

Long time ago two merchants had a feud and installed a black cat facing the other's property. Nowadays the black cats are on the rooftop of this building called the Cathouse.

I used this building as a landmark to where I was going. It is an interesting building. The cays were turned around after a man was exiled from the Guild. After he was eventually admitted, the cats were turned back.
