- Simon T49 contributionsTruly beautiful & unique place to visit…A truly beautiful, amazing and very unique place to visit. The lower town is small cobble streets and some lovely bars and restaurants that offer lovely views directly over the ocean. The upper town, while it’s not an easy climb to the upper town it is well worth the effort. Once up there it’s about 15 mins uphill climb on cobbles, steps and very uneven stone surfaces, the views are truly incredible. Top tips - go up early in the morning for the fabulous sunrise and cooler conditions. Also where appropriate footwear and take plead water with you..Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2023

- 607TomPOntario, Canada182 contributionsGreat place to visitThis is an often-overlooked attraction, but worth visiting. Great atmosphere, cool narrow streets. No cars; the fortress is accessible through a single gate wide enough for a donkey carrying luggage. A must-see when you visit Peloponnese.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2024
- Travel_Addict_CyprusMichigan1,278 contributionsA fantastic place!Peloponnese is an amazing place in its entirety, and one could visit again and again and still want to return. We've visited a few times before. This time we visited Monemvasia. We chose to stay inside the castle and indeed, it was a unique experience. I would recommend a place near to entrance because it's not easy carrying your luggage around. You always have the option to get help with that though, there are people you can pay and they'll carry your luggage in a cart, for a small fee. We stayed for 5 nights. We got a chance to dine at a few restaurants and walk all the way up to Hagia Sophia, to the lighthouse, the cemetery (Yiannis Ritsos grave) and more. We also enjoyed spending time at Monemvasia Beach, which is outside the castle. There was a nice spot where we got beach chairs and ordered drinks and coffee. We came back a second time to spend a few hours in the afternoon. From Monemvasia we did a few day trips, to Elafonisi (Simos Beach) and Kastania Cave one day, to Caves of Diros, Agia Theodora Vastas, and Mystras. If you only want to visit Monemvasia, staying inside the castle for at least 2 nights would be fun. We also saw a bunch of tourists buses dropping people off just for the day, but it's one thing to spend a few hours in this beautiful corner of Peloponnese, and another thing to "experience" Monemvasia.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024

The fortified medieval city is obscured from the land, accessible only by a narrow causeway. There are ancient fortifications and a church at the top of the hill (although construction limits access during weekdays). There are a myriad passages in this pedestrian town only (no cars, only carts). Quaint setting, with churches, walled fortifications, and restaurants, with numerous souvenir-type shops. An interesting visit, but wouldn't recommend staying in the town.

It's lovely medieval fortress town that it's definitely worth a visit, located on a small island connected by road to the mainland. Narrow streets with a plateau have stunning view. You can find cafes and restaurant,as well as shops with handcraft and a lot of guesthouses.
Be sure to walk all the way to the top to enjoy the landscape of the town, mainland and sea. Just beautiful.

Never go on a warm day during the day. Either choose an early quick walk up until the temperature rises or choose much later after 7.30 pm. The climb can be brisk and grueling if not perilous if you are not wearing proper, trekking or sports shoes. This itinerary is a must especially if you have more than 2 days to spend in Monemvasia. Try the time the church is open and if you can book a knowledgeable guide, even better.

We went as a family for a special celebration to Spiti sto Kastro. We stayed in 3 of the houses with children and grandchildren. It is superbly located and very clean and with all great amenities. But most of all we were impressed by the hospitality of Ersi and Xrysoula. They were super hosts and anything we wished for, was provided. Even the anniversary cake they arranged for us at the great Kanoni restaurant nearby.
We highly recommend living this Monemvasia experience like we did! Thanks ladies!

We spent a lovely day and night in this gem of a town. Surrounded by a wall this virtual island fortress town is filled with romantic views. Walking amidst the cobble stone, car-less streets, one is transported into an enchanted world of bygone days. A real treat not to be missed.

This was an amazing place to visit and soak up the history of such a unique location. it was a very rich experience to walk the streets during the day, exploring the inner castle walls and buildings, but even better to be here at night when most of the day-trippers are gone. Staying here for the night, wandering the Medieval alleys and checking out local businesses was one of the highlights of my trip to Greece.
The sunsets and sunrises were incredible.

Exquisite old village and medieval fortress with stone houses and narrow alleys, located on Monemvasia island, with a wonderful view from the top of the mountain. Parking is very difficult, we parked down the main street outside the village and walked up to the village. No cars inside the village, since there are no roads, just very narrow alleys, with steps everywhere. Beside the commercial side which probably cannot be avoided, it is a real jewel, and it is worth visiting. I particularly liked the small but beautiful flower gardens near some houses.

We stayed inside the castle of Monemvasia in the middle of December. Skipping the fact that is extremely difficult to find space to park your car, the whole area is something amazing that travels you back in history.
An enormous monument with big walls. Although it looks hard to climb n the top, the paths and the stairs are in very good condition.
Reaching on the top the views are breathtaking and everything is well preserved and clean.

Hi! We will be sailing into Monemvasia via Windstar Cruises. Am I correct in assuming we would be best to NOT book a tour and to just walk around to see all the main sights? Is the fortress easy to find? I'm not even sure where we would be docking. LOL.
Thank you in advance.

Hi, planning on coming here in January 2020. Are attractions and shops open at this time of year? How cold does it get?

Hi Amit,
The Castle (top of the mountain) is closed at 15.00 (winter time), summer time is usually longer. I think you can make it. But why to rush? You can go there in morning as we did and enjoy the beautiful reflection on sea. In evening you can look the low part of island. Remember there is no parking place. I would recommend to take taxi and NOT bus. Taxi comes cheaper. Hope I was helpful!
