We were driving from Phoenix to San Diego and specifically altered our route to pass through the dunes. It looks as if Lawrence of Arabia could have been filmed here, impressive dunes with lots of dune buggies enthusiasts taking advantage of them. These are the largest dunes open to recreational use in California. Northwest of Yuma, and east of Calipatria, with dimensions of 45 miles (NW to SE) by 6 miles (SW to NE). They are sand dune. Interesting if you have not ever experienced sand dunes before. The area on the left side of the road allows recreational activity (dune buggies, etc.), while the left side is a protected area. It is interesting to see the effect of human activity on the dunes versus condition of the protected side. There is no water... More
