We did the James Irvine Minor's Ridge Loop hike from Gold Bluffs Beach campground and the trail went through Fern Canyon. It is amazingly beautiful. Don't miss it.

Spectacular mini hike! Beautiful emerald green fern canyon, not too busy and we saw huge elk right near the entrance.

We took the turn off for fern valley and found a big elk herd. From here we took a windy road and a couple of creek crossings that you need to be careful with. Short hike and you are in fern valley which is beautiful....More

I wouldn't consider it off road as there is a road, but parts of it are not maintained well. I would check with different rental car companies and see what their contract says.

I was there in the spring there was lots of water flowing, many waterfalls coming down the sides of Canyon and ferns were beautiful. I have heard some summers there is way less water. But I think it would be beautiful all... More
